At my family's insistence though, had to sell my manual and the new one's an automatic, and you're absolutely right. It's just not fun anymore, not being involved with the gear. They should make cars that have convertible transmission or something, that Auto lovers can drive Auto and Manual lovers can do it manually.
@no.78932 жыл бұрын
I mean I think most modern automatic transmissions (or at least Dual clutch transmissions anyway) allow for the driver to leave the gearing to the cars ECU or the driver can take control of the gears themselves by pushing the gear shifter into a manual position or by using paddle shifters as seen in this video. The only aspect of it that you really miss out on is clutch control as I'm not aware of any car that allows the driver to choose between automated and manual control without requiring an entire transmission swap.

Was in an uber that was automatic and decided to search how to drive one. Makes you realise how tedious manuals are but you get used to it

I started my lessons 5 years ago in manual and felt rather comfortable doing so. Picked up the bite points of the clutch, and the engine telling you to change gear. But now I'm going for lessons again because I'm determined to pass this year but I've decided I have more chance of passing in an automatic then manual now. This video helped alot

Thanks for an excellent presentation on automatics - best video I've seen on YT so far. Only owned and driven manual transmission cars for the past 50 years but have had to drive somebody else's auto on a couple of occasions and just figured it out by trial and error but never had a proper articulate explanation of the whole process , lever positions , techniques , etc. Good job !

I’ve only ever driven manual cars but have to drive a friends automatic to its service appointment as he’s working away. Not gonna lie, I’m even more daunted now Ive watched this than I was before. Sounds so much more complicated than I ever imagined!!

I have driven manual cars ever since passing my test, with only a couple of very brief experiences of driving an automatic. I'm now looking at getting an automatic and found this very helpful. Thank you.

After doing about 12 hours of manual lessons I’ve realised it just isn’t for me! Have my first automatic lesson today and watching this so I can have a little head start. Thank you so much! :)

Thankyou so much for this! I passed in a manual, and a year later still hate driving, i begged my husband to let me change to auto and he has finally agreed, i don't know why there is such stigma over autos, if its better for some people then leave them to it! I struggle with the clutch, and avoid hills where possible, if im in traffic on a hill i tremble and start breathing funny as im terrified of rolling back, an auto i think is defo the best option for me, i just hope itseasy to switch from manual to auto without any lessons.

Manual isn't for everyone. But if you passed in a manual, auto should be a breeze.

Mc angel thanks for leaving this comment as I'm in exactly the same situation! I passed in a manual and my husband and all my family kept saying I had to pass in a manual and eventually I will love it. I passed first time and I'm fine with gear changes but even after a year of driving I hate hill starts and stops and get a very cramped leg from the clutch as I have fibromyalgia - still getting pressured to stick to manual but after watching this video I'm wondering why on earth I wouldn't go auto, it makes so much more sense for me. How has it been for you switching to auto?

Skepticism towards automatics often tends to be down to the costs. Its because they can often be more expensive to buy, and a lot more expensive to fix if anything goes badly wrong with the gearbox. I haven’t learned to drive yet myself, but if/when I do all my family would rather me drive manually, where as I keep thinking I’ll be better off doing automatic.

Thanks for this. Just bought a car in the UK after not having driven for 5yrs (was another country), and this is really helpful as I've completely forgotten everything that used to be a reflex ahaha!

Appreciate this. I learned and passed in manual but my brother has an automatic that needs moving across Devon but doesn’t have a full license, so now I need to figure out how to drive a car I’ve never driven before. This was a help.

I'm someone who doesn't go out often, mainly for work, so I never saw the need to learn to drive asap. I'm still in my early 20s, but I'm starting to regret not learning. As I'm at work and don't really have time, I've decided to go for automatic lessons, also because I get quite anxious in cars - even just as a passenger. My first automatic lesson is on Thursday and I can't wait to begin my driving experience! Definitely doing a lot of research & learning to understand how automatic works before my first lesson! Thank you for providing great resources to learners!

Conquer Driving I have a doubt. I have the new 2019 grand i10 Automatic. When I am going uphill, and release the brake pedal, it starts rolling back. It doesn't crawl forward in Drive mode. What should I do in that case??

Good video. I liked also how you included the different types of gearbox's ( personally I detest CVT's) In the last 18 months I have changed to an automatic, I have a Ford Focus 2 litre powershift and I find the DSG system extremely good and very smooth and I can still get a reasonable mileage from the car 55-60 mpg without driving like miss daisy. As I said at the start a good informative video.

I wish that I would have watched this BEFORE I took a test drive in a brand new automatic. I made the mistake of taking my foot off the brake when I stopped at lights, and of course the car started to drive straight into the car in front of me. It was a minor bumper to bumper accident, and no-one was injured, but it was a costly mistake, I had to pay a £500 insurance access to the dealers insurers, as I was covered by their insurance for the test drive. If it had have been on my insurance, my access would have only been £100. As I said, a costly mistake, but the worse part was walking back into the Dealers afterwards. I had been driving since 1978 with never having had an accident, something that I was pretty proud of. Hence the reason I'm on here getting tips before I take receipt of my new Automatic in June (plus a couple of lessons from a friend). Always easy to be wise after the event. Thanks for the video, very helpful.
