… with a little help from a professional racing driver. Of course, it’s easy to get carried away with chucking new and expensive performance bits at your track build, but you’re not getting the most out of them if you’ve never had proper driver training to kick you into gear. So we’ve enlisted the services of Charles Rainford, pro racing driver and our PH Project Car rival, to train Cam up and (hopefully) unlock the full potential of our recently modded Golf GTI. Just how much time can we make up with a day of training around the legendary Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit?

Best thing I ever did was take a 3 day track driving course. Made me realize I was only steering my car instead of driving it. It also makes you worry when you go onto freeways, knowing that 95% of the other drivers don’t know ANYTHING!

I've got to catch up on this series. Was looking at a second car / first car after 3 years not driving and was close to getting a MK5 GTI myself perhaps but for safety reasons and also maybe not needing 200 bhp just yet, gone with something a bit slower and newer

MKV is pretty bloody safe, any NCAP testing nowadays is "what sensors has the car got" rather than passenger safety inside

@@R03333 True it's confusing how that is the case now but even structurally wise cars have come a decent way. My first car was a 140PS Fiesta 1.0 from 2016 and a heavy goods vehicle went into back of it when we had stopped at traffic lights on a dual carriageway. Car crumpled a lot but did its job to protect and someone has managed to repair it so it's out there again. One of the lowest mileage examples too probably 😥 May get a MK5 at some point but I have a 1.5 Mini for the moment :)

Can anyone explain why you’re not allowed timing computers or whatever on the track? Why would that matter to the owners? Is it so you don’t import it in to a driving simulator and practise too much and have an advantage?

I think they say it officially to discourage people racing against times etc. Of course there is nothing stopping you being a bit sneaky

It’s to try to reduce people “racing” on open track days and I’m certain insurance liability comes into it too. Most action cams do data overlay etc during processing, so you’d get lap times anyway.
