My late husband taught me the art of never fully stopping when driving on snow in traffic. I told him it couldn't be done. He proved me wrong by driving across town and never fully stopping, even when at a light. You just let the car move as slowly as you need, stay well behind the car in front of you and just inch along. This is a very useful video from the year I was born.

I’m watching this because I daily drive a 1966 Thunderbird with no ABS, traction control, or anything like that, and I must prepare myself for snow driving. These old educational videos are cool, much better than modern stuff.

The Thunderbirds of that era require lots of precautions to drive on ice and snow - snow tires are an absolute must - Do not confuse snow tires with all season tires - Real snow tires have an aggressive large lugs molded into the tread.They look like the tires that are used for off road use on 4 wheel drive trucks and SUVs. Also,be sure to warm up your engine to the point where the automatic choke will turn off,so that the engine will be at a low idle speed,since a high idle speed will make it difficult to stop the car on ice and snow.It's a great idea to take the car into a large,unoccupied parking lot during,or immediately after,a fresh snowfall so that you can get the feeling of how the car handles on ice and snow.Always accelerate and brake gently when driving on slippery surfaces,and be sure to maintain an adequate following distance,since it takes longer to stop on slippery surfaces. Hope this information will help....

Most all of this information is STILL relevant. The one exception is part of the rocking technique. Many modern automatics go into gear so slowly that you CAN'T shift quickly from Reverse to Drive and back like they showed. The transmission often just won't go into gear fast enough. You have to brake, change direction, rock, brake, change direction, rock, brake, repeat. It takes longer, but it does work.

Exactly right. I have a '14 sierra and when I bog it down in snow (or mud) I go one direction until it's about to spin then I stop suddenly and change direction. Works perfectly.

Classic looking cars of the 1950's. Love the '50's look. And, Studebaker cars ARE "collectors items". My mom did the "pumping of the brakes" when we lived in Indianapolis in the several decades past. It worked on the American Motors Ramblers and GM Olds, they ( Mom & Dad) owned.

You can never be too safe when it comes to driving in the winter unless the roads are dry and clear of ice and snow. You should always leave a safe distance between you and the person in front of you even if it’s not winter time and besides that it’s irritating when people tailgate people because if if someone suddenly had to slam on the brakes the person behind them would most likely end up hit them. One thing most people do not do is correct and proper maintenance of a vehicle in the winter time, especially the engine and the wipers. Think about if you were the engine just woke up now you have to do your job, you have to start up in the cold and the driver expects you to work 100% and just that little bit of time starting up-hi sis drivers need to know that The vehicle engines need to be warmed up before you go somewhere like starting the day. For that engine of course check that it has plenty of oil and gas and wiper fluid, check that the wipers are in good condition most of the time they will be hard and covered in ice wipers cannot do their job if they are hard and frozen. So make sure you give the engine time to warm up properly, depending on the type of vehicle rather that be diesel or gasoline. Diesel -turn it on and off a few times to get the glow plugs warm, and roughly the same with a gasoline engine also although they do not use glow plugs they use spark plugs it is not the same I know but the engine needs to warm up specially on those cold mornings.

This one is a 1957 Chevrolet series 210. Same body but less chrome and dress-up parts. The two-tone panel on the rear fender is painted here, matching the roof - a BelAir had a ribbed bright aluminum panel. The 150 series was the base model and didn't have that contrast panel at all -different side trim. All very cool. Here I'm loving the 1957 Dodge at 2:15, but the real star for most is the Corvette on the ice at 4:30.

My first car was a 2005, without ABS. I was able to control stops SOO much easier than in any of my succeeding 3 cars WITH ABS. ABS just makes you skid off into the distance with no hope.

That's accurate on slippery roads. I can stop better in snow if I pull the ABS fuse and rely on my foot for threshold braking, but on dry pavement I think the ABS would do better.

…having grown up in Cheyenne, Wyoming…these winter driving precautions and maneuvers were learned early and repeatedly…particularly since rear-wheel drive snd standard brakes were the norm… …the procedure for “rocking the car” was an acquired skill, similar to finding the clutch friction point… …our family car was a ‘65 Pontiac Star Chief sedan; and the latter 60’s saw the advent of studded snow tires, which pretty much made chains unnecessary except in very deep snow… …in central SE Texas, where I currently live. Snow is exceedingly rare; but two seasons ago, we experienced both deep snow and freezing rain/ice… …tailgating, which is quite common here created huge numbers of unnecessary collisions…and at dozens of intersections, these same poor drivers often skidded through red lights and caused serious T-bone wrecks…😮😱🍆

+MrGeeMan1980 This just shows you how out dated this video is. I am 40 and never owned such an old car. Cars have gotten better over the years. Anti lock brakes are just one improvement that my dad never had on his '70 Challenger but now most people don't know how they would live without.
@JamesSmith-jq2jc
@JamesSmith-jq2jc 4 жыл бұрын
Back then you might of had a posi-traction rear axle. This would give power to both wheels when one lost traction. On a car without that feature the tire without traction would spin and the one with traction would not. The cars of today give people a FALSE SENSE of control. Might be why I see so many crashing, I owned cars that had both types of rear axles and had drum brakes all around. Was never an issue driving in snow or ice. One needed to drive slowly, today it seems everyone is speeding regardless of the weather. There would probably be more deaths if not for better safety in the designs of cars. Things such as air bags and crumple zones. Look at the video on KZbin.....58 chevy crashes into midsize car.

it doesn't make a difference which wheels are driven if the skid occurs because of a braking or steering action. Yes, you may be able to get out of a skid in a front-drive car by applying a little bit of power, but this doesn't do you any good if your intention before the skid is to stop, or turn.

In 1956 Ford tried to introduce safety equipment - seat belts, padded dashboards and visors, dished steering wheel, etc. They called it 'Lifeguard Styling'. They quickly de-emphasized it when other manufacturers said it proved Fords must be unsafe cars since they had that stuff! Gotta love American capitalism.
