Stay in the right lane unless your passing someone. If everyone knew this rule and it was enforced then we would have a lot less accidents and it would be a lot less scarier. Instead we have drivers told that the middle lanes are ok to hog then when Chad going 80 in his Type R tries to pass the fat prius' betas going 55 hogging the middle and left lanes and he has to pass you on the right and he ends up crashing into all of them because one of the prius swerves for the exit. The fact that our highways are so bumpy and America doesnt teach proper lane etiquet is why it looks so intimidating. If we just had an emergency public service anouncement and explained the rules and enforced them then we would have such better highways that also guess what GO FASTER. MORE EFFICIENT AND SAFER OMG BUT NOOOOOOOOOO

As a pointer to anybody learning to drive, I just recently drove on the highway for the first time, its intimidating, but a big tip is to stay calm and be aware. Yes everyone was overtaking me, the speed limit was 55 and I barely did 60, but I did it since I wasn't fully comfortable. Its not nearly as hard as it can seem

as an update, I've become a much better driver, a lot of it is just getting used to the area and being confident in your driving, you'll always have to be aware of other people but practice really does help a lot. it still isn't fun having people overtake me doing like 20 over but its whatever. people are always going to overtake you, even if you do 20 over theres going to be some person whos that impatient. it probably took me a year or so before i was really comfortable driving, and even now i get uncomfortable when I'm in an area i don't know too well

With the number of people that either die or get injured in car accidents you'd think people would take not dying in a violent car wreck more seriously. I've just started driving and people drive like maniacs. The 3 second rule you mentioned makes sense. You don't actually know what's going to happen with the car in front of you. They can slam on the breaks for any number of reasons. Human beings are not fortune tellers, but we act like we are. And also, like you said, if I follow the 3 second rule people WILL cut in front of me. I've had someone cut in front of me where it made NO SENSE. There was literally no room for them and they almost crashed into the side of my car trying to squeeze their way in. So I had to slow down, then the person tailgating behind me almost rear ended me. People are so fucking stupid. For the average person driving is the most dangerous thing we do and yet they drive like they're all suicidal.

Not just for highway driving, but you should put your indicator on to change lanes as soon as when you want to change lanes. A lot of people do all the mirror checks and then indicate and change lanes immediately after. By indicating as soon as possible, this lets other drivers around you know that you want to change lanes and some nice drivers will even make room for you, especially in heavy traffic. No one's going to make room for you when they don't know what you're doing. Also, people not merging at highway speeds is the most irritating thing I see on the road, especially when you're stuck behind them because then you also have to try and merge when all the other cars are going much faster and it's just an all-round unsafe situation. Worst thing I ever saw was someone had come to a complete stop in the merging lane at the end of the on-ramp. It's so terribly moronic it blows my mind. It makes me wonder how they passed their driving test.

This was an interesting peek into the realm of U.S traffic laws and driving culture in general. Here in Finland the amount of overspeeding is measured by how many % of the legal speed limit one overspeeds. For an example doing 20km/h over the 120km/h limit on a freeway on a bright july day leaves you with a ticket and the amount depends on your growth income rate.. But if you do 70km/h on rural 50km/h speed limit street with pedestrian crossings and a kindergarten close by, it's very possible they take your license and slam you with a big fat fine that takes about a year for a normal person to pay off.. And heer practically nobody slows down on a construction bit of the road.. People blast right through with 130km/h in the clock even the limit had dropped down to 60km/h.. I think the cops don't wanna radar those juicy spots 'cause instantly there would be a line of cars two miles long for everybody having their licenses revoked and fined for 5000€.. :D

The slow lane is for trucks, tirs, caravans and slow cars; you would have to keep overtaking those and keep changing lane. That causes you to be in more danger and travel more slowly than keeping the middle lane. In a 4 or more lane, been very rarely in one, so I don't know.

+David Vanderson but if there is no one to overtake just move all the way right to prevent undertaking. You can get a fine here in Germany if you hog the middle lane.

Oh one tip that definitely needs to be said. Don't loiter in people's blind spots. That means don't stay in the lane next to a semi. That also means if there's a car in the next lane avoid being at the back quarter on either side and don't match their speed. (I'm always surprised by people who think it's a good idea to match my speed while their front fender is lined up with my back fender. A VERY dangerous move.)
@knutemotorsport8 жыл бұрын
1) When entering the highway, FLOOR IT on the onramp until you're going the speed of traffic, THEN MERGE OVER. 2) Unless you are actively passing someone (or stuck in line waiting to pass), GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE LEFT LANE. 3) If you want to pass someone, accelerate up to the same speed as left-lane traffic, pass the slowpoke, then GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE LEFT LANE. 4) DO NOT drive the speed limit if everyone else is doing 15+ mph faster; you're just a relatively stationary obstacle and a danger to other motorists. 5) GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE LEFT LANE. Even if you drive 85mph, somebody else is still faster than you, just let them go.

1:55 wrong. The best lane to use is the one farthest to the right that’s not being used. Then pass any cars that are still on the right and merge to the far right when possible. That way you and other drivers can minimize the amount of lanes needed to change in order to clear traffic ahead of us while driving fast, safe and predictable. The “passing lane/fast lane” is not just the left lane it’s any lane to the left of the “cruise/ slower traffic lane.” Drivers who camp out in the next lane over from the far left can still be considered passing lane hogs if they’re not attempting to pass cars on their right or if they stay in that lane even after making the pass. Basically just make the pass on the left side and move over to the “cruise/slow lane” ASAP or just keep your ass in the cruise lane if you’re too scared to pass anyone.

Here where I live everyone works for Microsoft and they all drive Prius' due to the long commute every day, so often times they coast anywhere from 15-5mph under the speed limit, with no bad conditions or reason. Just an extra thought :P

We have 2 Highway lanes in Austria, we are supposed to drive on the right lane, merging to the left lane is for passing other vehicles.

Hey Parker! When you got on the freeway ramp, was that the ramp near ArborLand strip mall? There's a big sign that is a big A. Just curious cuz I've been there quite a bit

I'm 28 and My fear of driving on highways is because of road rage. I would watch video here on KZbin of some of the most violent people hurting others cause they didn't like their driving. And Now I'm so afraid that if I do something, someone will either hurt or kill me for like accidental cut off or something. and when I drive on the highway with someone, I like to stay in the lane next to the exit/merge lane.

I am so glad that everybody in germany adheres to the "Rechtsfahrgebot" (aka the "stay as right as possible you moron" law), it just makes life that much easier. And yes even if you go 200+ mph and the lane to your right is empty, you switch lanes.

+PickeKid I went through the driver's Ed and they didn't actually teach me anything about night driving or highway driving. They said it was a waste of time and that I'll be able to take care of myself, even though they were obliged by the law to teach me.

The most important advice to never get an accident: KEEP A LONG DISTANCE BETWEEN YOU AND THE CAR IN FRONT. 99% of drivers are too fucking stupid to realize that having a great distance = less traffic less accidents. There is absolutely no reason to be close to the car in front of you, unless you're a total peanut brained moron. 99% of people who will read my comment don't keep a good distance.

Always keep to the furthest right lane unless overtaking, unless traffic is backed up or traffic flow is heavy eg. in a large city.
@johntracy726 жыл бұрын
Technically, the left lane is supposed to be for passing other traffic only. It's certainly that way in Germany and it's strictly enforced unless there's extenuating circumstances like an accident or construction.

I NEED YOUR HELP! I am looking for a s2000 for my first car. At the moment, I am 15 and a half years old. I've always loved motorsports and my dad frequents track days. I was wondering if it would be smart to learn on an s2k? I also was planning on modifying it so that while I was in college I could start to learn on the track. I have already taken racing schools. Is this smart or are my goals far fetched?

Have racked up about 15% of my daytime hours for my liscence. All I can say is that I SUCK at driving, I've almost crashed our track twice (turned left into the wrong lane once and off roaded the vehicle while checking the speedometer.) My dad wants me to go on the highway and I'm not gonna sugar coat it, it's gonna be scary, really really scary. Thank you for the tips (I'm in Virginia here!)

Where I live most of the freeways are 4 lanes, with slow people in the right, slow 18 wheelers in the next lane over, slower 18 wheelers in the next lane, and people going 15 over in the left. Difficult to find a good place.
@The_Unkn0wn_5.08 жыл бұрын
Driving on the highway is not hard. The only thing people need to be cautious about is left lane sitting, and being vigilant with you mirrors for blind spots and street racers cutting in and out of traffic.

can you do or do you already have a video on lane control? im not bad at driving but i have trouble staying in my lane, or more specifically, judging if i am in my lane. are their any rules of thumb, like left bumper on the yellow line or something like that? also, do you have anytips for driving on South Carolina roads? i have trouble controlling my car sometimes because of how bad the roads are.

Can someone explain to me why the fast lane is a thing? Don’t you need to drive the speed limit?
@Free10zin2 жыл бұрын
It’s to make traffic flow more efficient. The general idea is to pass someone on their left and then merge over to the furthest right lane that’s available. Passing on on the left is safer since the majority of exits ramps are on the right
