Another thing to consider (in my opinion) is "speed change." If you are always fast and always slow, your opponent will notice and play against you. However, changing the speed makes it much more unpredictable and easier to get past defenders.

I teach my kids the “clip the hip” method, where you’re aiming to bump the defender’s hip as you pass them to keep a tight angle to the rim. I also teach a modified swim move to throw the defender’s hand behind you as you start your drive. In other words, as you start your drive your off hand reaches out and swipes the defender’s hand on your driving side, pushing it down and behind you as you take your first step.

Love that! Great tips. Teaching players to engage with defenders once they get angles is so important.

To your first point: kids these days watch the NBA - the NBA is all about a very wide, spread out floor where 5/5 players on the floor are shooters. They call every foul. They see so much space on TV that once they have to actually play in real games, they realize no one can shoot, and the paint gets packed and they aren't gonna get every foul call. Its not even that they're watching games they're watching full game highlights too. It's almost like watching WWE and then going to join a wrestling team thinking that that's how people wrestle and then they tap out in 5 seconds

@@CONLEYHOOPS for sure, can I ask for confidence advice ? Like I practiced all the pickups, low, high, tuck, euro, but for some reason I never drive in game, my coach really wants me to I just never do.
@CONLEYHOOPS Жыл бұрын
@@Bjay127 driving is a skill that takes work and focused work. It’s hard to all of sudden do it if you have never done it before. If I were you I would start with a lot of one on one and don’t settle for shots anywhere but at the rim. Go through contact and find a way to score. A lot of times we settle because it’s easy. It’s really the uncomfortable becoming comfortable that matters. Be clear on your goal and then consistently work on it until you love to attack the basket.
@Bjay127 Жыл бұрын
@@CONLEYHOOPS thank you. I did a good bit of finishing before with friends like on hip and hand off but that’s probably it. Since I’m on break I’m gonna get a lot of my friends together to scrimmage, and I’m gonna just keep driving. And do the 1v1 thing you said and I’ll keep driving. Thank you
