@@ridethewindHaha! We are so far behind with these ancient laws that don’t keep up with advancing technology. Japan updated their laws last year July 2023. The new classification is “Small motorized bicycles” which must be registered and insured to allow 60km/h max speeds.

I think these small vehicles are a good idea, but my concern is people who have zero experience of driving suddenly on the road with no knowledge of the rules of the road. I see people in mobility scooters riding on the wrong side of the road, turning from the wrong lanes, failing to signal and switching from roads to crosswalks when it’s convenient for them. This kind of stupid behaviour gets people killed. Yeah, there are bad, licensed drivers, but that’s not the point. As these vehicles become heavier, faster and more powerful these issues are going to force policy makers to regulate them. You may not like it I certainly don’t, but it seems to me that that’s the inevitable result.
