Test your drone above the shore first that it’s fully working before committing to going over water. 4. Return very early before the battery gets low. Keep a battery reserve. Remember that flying back upwind uses more battery than flying downwind .

I flew my Mavic Pro over water several years ago. I was about 15 feet high, and there was some wave action. As I hovered, the Mavic began descending. No matter what I did, it wouldn’t stop. I finally regained control just before it touched the water. I assumed the sensors were confused by the waves. It has me very nervous to fly over water now, and that’s a shame because I am surrounded by bodies of water.

Hey Ken. Thanks for the shoutout! It appears that particular chromecast device I use to mirror the screen for the Mini and goggles has sold out already. Anyone looking for a similar model must ensure that the unit has a FEMALE HDMI out port on it and not come with an already wired MALE HDMI like the Google Chromecast does. This will allow you to plug in the HDMI cable to the DJI Goggles. Alternatively, you will need a Female to Female HDMI adaptor. Great video as always Ken, informative and entertaining. Keep it up! 👍

I enjoy the fun you have with the drones, sir. Your sense of fun and "dad's sense of humor" works for me. Maybe because I'm a dad. I dunno. Anyway, I am sure you got those 21 down votes for the comments about the helmet law, but I bet you knew that would happen. I hate to say it, but I think those who want to ride without a helmet should be allowed to do so as long as they are legal adults. If they want to be a brain donor, that's on them. Personally, when I rode, I always wore a helmet. I liked my chances better. I ride a bicycle, now, and wouldn't ride anywhere without a helmet. Seen too many ugly accidents and injuries happening to those who didn't. Please keep up the good work.

@ KenHeron -great little video. I just got a mini yesterday - its all charged and ready to go, Love your content and agree with the silly lack of laws! I was in the US back in 1997 and was gobsmacked (amazed in a bad way in case you don't speak the Queen's English) to see a motorcyclist riding along with a helmet strapped to the back of his bike. He happened to stop at the same place we did and I asked him. He was traveling across the state to another one that DID have a sensible law. So he was going to stop at the state line and put it on! Makes me wonder how some states still have people in them! Thanks again Ken! Have a great weekend.

As of 2023 i fly my mini and my spark mostly above water. I live near a river. Pfv with drone mask 2. Just a few feet above qater. And love flying below bridges sometimes with just a few feet high clearance. The spark crashed once into the water, but managed to get ot out quickly. Let it dry for a few days and flues again as nothing happened.

So this could go without saying, but it also needs to be said. I saw a lot of mavic mini crashes including my own (wasn’t my fault at least and got a free drone ty Dji) Anyways it seems like a lot of people crash when they first take off, right as the app would tell them they have enough satellites. Either 9 or 11 or whatever. The trick is to just be patient and wait for a few more satellites. I had a second small fly away (lucky the drone wasn’t injured) and based on anecdotal evidence from other people, flying as soon as the app updates and says you can now safely fly, is not a good idea. Just wait 1-2 more minutes, get another few satellites and no problems. Since adopting this method I’ve had zero issues with it.

Hey Ken, I have a question or two if you don't mind , how good are zeee batteries ? Anything i should know ? I finally got one to convert my drones fat (it's bloated and going to give birth lol) stupid 7 min flight time battery to one that will go instead of fly for a few moments and go home . I tagged you a while back on my drone post on Instagram so you could see my first drone . The only thing that sucks is the insta360 won't fit so I'm gonna have to fix up something to hold it in place , I really want to do some 4k in the air . Ken, that was a brushless car wash. Those are cloth strips, not the old plastic brush bristles. Mini doesn't like slow-moving streams. The scariest flight was when the Mini took on a life of its own over a smooth slow-moving stream.

As you say, flying next to water is fine as long as you're not too close! I think DJI recommend no lower than 12ft as sensors can get confused with reflections, colours etc. I was flying my MA2 over a river a few weeks ago, it was hovering around 3m, when I noticed it lowering itself closer to the water's surface with no input from me! Be very careful if you're planning on flying under 12ft over water! ✌️🇬🇧

Yea, my mini went swimming this weekend. I forgot about getting too close, I think I was about 4-5ft above the water and had looked away for 2 seconds to move for better sight lines and it went down. The amazing thing is after retrieving it from about 8ft of water. I let it air dry until I could get it into some rice. Let it sit in rice for two days and voila, it flies again. The battery is toast, but that's a price I'm willing to pay for this lesson. I need to get the State Farm insurance on top of the DJI Care Refresh.

Hi Ken, by far the coolest guy doing drone vids.... I actually lost my DJI Spark into water. I lost WIFI connection while a Bridge opened up right near me. I put it down to strong magnetic interference. I have wondered ever since whether the OTG cable may have saved the ole Spark or not..?? DJI wanted me to somehow retrieve the data for them to go through... yeah sure... Anyways, keep up the great work and look forward to more fun videos...

Funny you should mention the Mini and wind. I flew last Sunday in moderate breeze as the BBC weather app said. No higher than about 30 feet and no only did the wind take it in the opposite direction to where I was flying, but it drained the battery mega fast. At critical battery level I managed to coax it back to within about fifty feet before it auto landed. At one point, I thought as it disappeared over trees that I had lost it. The mini is so light, it is for calm days. Fortunately, I have the Air which copes much better.

Hello Ken, I love flying my drone but get intimidated when flying close to things. I try to use the guides in the DJI fly app but I can't figure out when to use the guides. Can you make a short video demonstrating how and when you should use your guidelines on the DJI fly app?

The grid lines on the app are really mostly for lining things up for photography and stills. Acclimating yourself to flying close to things is a skill that comes with practice. Much like figuring out where the wheels on your car are, it will come to you eventually. Good luck!

It's not the water I worry about. I lost a Mavic Air clipping a bridge pillars a while back. Perspective is everything when flying...My depth perception was off because of the angle which I was standing from the drone. You know how it goes...sometimes you just want to get that shot! Knew it was a bad idea but sometimes you gotta take the risk...

I know ken mentioned this a little bit but don’t forget water, beaches, cliffs etc have stronger wind than on land. Same can be said higher up. So you can’t just assume bc it’s not that windy on the ground that it isn’t worse higher up or on the coast

For me its actually the opposite. I would rather fly over water and in worst case lose the drone then fly over the land and in its worst case crash over someone's head or on some property and pay heavy price.. I fear more when i am flying over land where I constantly have to watch to where I am flying. Happy Flying over water 😀

As far as googles go for my mini I just printed the shell, then I use my Moto5g phone attached to a OTG adapter that plugs into the controller. works out just fine and it's the same quality as if it were flying normally on the phone. The only downside is it's not very easy to make any selections on the screen.

I fly a Phantom 4 over the Allegheny River in Pa regularly. only issue is near dark it will alert ambient light may not be enough for the sensors to read. Pa has one of those stupid no helmet laws too. the trauma centers are great and can fix a lot of things, but the brain injuries are difficult. Freeeedoom, yaaaaa.

I have about 10 old from dromida vista drones that after I put them away I took them out and noticed each drone has rear right prop not spinning. I’ve bought all new batteries and everything. I had little fear the first time I flew over water with my Phantom 3. I flew off the beach north of Ocean City NJ and over the Atlantic Ocean. After that flight I had no more fear of flying over the water. Heck I even enjoy going over water now.

Same thing here in New Hampshire. No helmet law so all riders get to enjoy higher motorcycle insurance rates. "Live Free or Die". And, trauma centers are few and far between. Usually a trip in a BIG rotorcraft! Thanks for the info on flying over water, Ken. I've been very skittish about flying my M2P over water bodies.

Hey Ken, cheers from Memphis again! I have a full range reference audio system and I'm hearing a lot of rumble around 6:30 on your voice. proximity effect from the mic. a 70-80hz lo cut (or high pass) filter on your voice over would clear all that up! that's a sick ninja btw
