I had a similar incident to your friend breaking their wrist. Someone at the skate park wanted to pop out like I did (it was like 10 feet tall. He popped out an bailed a few times but was doing good on one attempt he went straight up and blacked out mid air and landed on the copping with his arm. He almost fell back In but was able to grab the copping in time. But his arm was looked bent and It was broken.

It all depends on the amount of abuse you put it through, but as a beginner I think it will last longer than a year for you.

which is easier just going head on and dropping in. or rolling along side the court and turn in.

Depends how big the quarter is, on a big quarter definitely to the side, on a small quarter, it doesn't matter too much.
