4:44 I like that you mentioned having a lot of water in a bigger container, and I think a lot of people just do it in a tiny sauce pot and think that they’re gonna get all that color in there it’s basically like one of those twisted up tie-dyes misses areas of fabric.

@CosplaySewingSchool4 жыл бұрын
That is a tricky dye job. I rarely dye finished garments like that. My suggestion is to use both types of dye in your dye bath. This would mean the dye would need to be the same color. The fibers will pick up each dye as they can. Nylon dyes with rit all purpose but poly will need RIT dyemore. I suggest sticking to one brand so the colors match up.

Hi there! Thanks for the great video. If I wanted to have an ombré dye pattern how many minutes should each section be dyed for? For example, if I wanted to dye fabric for a long skirt and have the lightest color at the waist/abdomen area and the darkest at my feet should I remove part of the fabric every 5 minutes (If I dye for a total of 30 minutes then there will be about 6 dye segments and the dye times will be 5 minutes, 10, 15, 20, 25 and then 30 minutes for the last section). Is 5 minutes enough to get a little bit of color or is that too long? It’s a white fabric and I wanted to use a Navy Blue. I want the lightest section to be mostly white with a hint of the blue and the darkest to be a deep navy. TIA!

Would be interesting to see if the dye works in colder temperatures (maybe using the spent solution as a base) Split the solution up into 4 batches and do 4 different test pieces at 4 different temperatures to see the result... It would not surprise me if the temperature is not as much of a factor as one might believe... I think the time the fabric is exposed to the solution and the strength of the solution has more effect on the result...

Thanks for the video. I think that's a pretty color-- sort of a dark salmon, it if's picking up the way it is in real life. I've been dying for a while now but only cottons. This is my first foray into synthetic. Since I'm not sure what the differences are, I've been looking at what others have done. Yes, red is a tough color. Black, too, I'm told. I tried three times to dye one pair of white cotton jeans -- first they were pink, then darker pink (sort of neon pink), and the third time I got cherry red. I really don't like bright reds. I was trying for Christmas red. I am now happy to have a really deep purple. LOL! I don't know if it's the dye or the fabric but it's very hard to get red to stay. It also, BTW, will always have to be washed separately because it always bleeds. Found that out the hard way, too. At least, that was my experience. Now I'm about to try dying a bright red synthetic sweater purple. You're right when you say, "you never know how it will come out." LOL! But I won't wear it the way it is. BTW, one reason I was looking around is that, elsewhere (not sure where, exactly), I saw or read that when dying synthetics, you should add a cup or so of vinegar to the dye bath. With cottons they recommended a cup of salt which I've used and besides the stubborn red, has done a great job. Afterwards, too, there was advice on a natural fixative-- it could be vinegar again, but that's the part I can't remember. Have you heard of that?
