Great video, thanks. I appreciated the tip on looking for the clear glassing knob opposite an avalanche area for spot and stock. Bears always need to be close to water and timber and the greenery in the spring - spot on. I look for major funnel systems, and then for avalanche areas down-ridge of that. If you have a convergence of two major funnel systems and then an avalanche series S and/or SE with greenery that's ideal as it will hold more bears, for the habitat in general. Be at least a mile away from a road, given public pressure. You didn't mention it, but I look for burns and also trail signs, which are visible in Google Earth Pro, where deer and elk have tore it up...and mineral springs. This is a natural major protein source in the spring as bears feed on newborns. Find the deer and elk and grass, and you'll find bears. A dense forest nearby helps. Be sure to look at your elevation too, such as an average of around 4,000 ft type deal as there tends to be a sweet spot in each major geographical region for where bears first start to forage.

this year we google earthed pretty thoroughly for an area in idaho the total hike was about 6 miles. we made a camp way point at about 2.5 for the first night in a spot we had hunted previously. I have to say that google earth though a useful tool does not do land features justice. we started at about 6000 feet and our second waypoint at mile six was 9400 or so. it was the most savage and punishing hike we have ever done and i will take a lot more of what i see on google earth with skepticism as far as ease of access. one last thing most ppl fail to realize is when you see timber on sattelite it does not show you the drainages most of it covers so you find yourself hiking 3 thousand yards down and up to get to a spot thats 500 yards as the crow flies.

Backwoods navigation app for your phone will show satellite images same as Google earth and also has a topography setting so you can compare how the areas are actually shaped showing drains and what not ......hope it is helpful

How is black bear different compared to typical deer/elk in terms of bullet shot placement and in terms of field butchering? Also what is the minimum cooking temperature to avoid trichonosis?

I feel like google earth isnt accurate for my hunting areas. Its been timbered since last images were taken so its hard to trust what you are getting into sometimes. Glad there is a date in the bottom right corner usually so you arent expecting much if the image is older. How often are you duped with what you saw on google earth?

This is talking specifically about spring bear hunting. Similar tactics may apply for fall bear, but instead of just looking for grasses you'd want to identify areas with lots of berries and other fall preferred foods.

I think similar principles would apply, but you would be trying to hone in on different food sources that time of year such as berries and what not.
