You didn't say in the video but did you spray the entire 2nd (glitter) can all at one time, in one coat? If not, did you sand between coats? And what about the 5 final, Triple Thick clear coats - did you sand in between those? Thanks in advance.

i like when someone cut through all the different ways and just tell us what to do. I've seen other good videos but this is the method I'm going with. Great video. I like doing things on the cheap and I'm kind of impatient by nature, so this was just what I needed. I did a partscaster with gold glitter and it came out pretty good for a first shot. The one comment I might make is that the glitter paint spray comes out with more pressure and greater volume than I thought and the first coat was a disaster. I was too close and I gobbed it on. A couple of huge runs and I was done for the day. I had to let it sit, then sand it off, then repaint the base gold and start the glitter all over. Tested my patience big time. The second time I stood about 3 feet away and just dusted the guitar body. Same thing with the clear coat. Stand back and dust. Build slowly. Take like....10 minutes. Thanks

Love the look of that! Some of the things you did here, I've seen recommendations against. Just to be clear - I am not an expert at all, I have just tried to read up on spray painting this past year so as to not mess up my own projects - so that's where the info below comes from. The first thing that went against what most people recommend, was sanding with 1000 grit on the primer, before applying the colour coat. Since acrylic lacquer relies on mechanical adhesion, a 1000 grit surface is too smooth for the paint to stick properly over time, and you risk peeling after a year or so. The highest grit I've seen recommended for good adhesion is 400. Some people won't go higher than 220. When using nitrocellulose lacquer, you don't need to worry about adhesion, because nitrocellulose melts into itself. Acrylic lacquer does not. The second thing is that you sprayed so many coats within such a short time period. The general rule I've seen is max 6 coats, divided into 2 spraying sessions, over the space of one day. Supposedly, too many coats within too short a time can cause the non-evaporated solvents to get trapped inside the paint job, which will cause imperfections over time. I hope your job stays awesome. But in case it doesn't, hopefully the above pointers will help for your next job, or for anyone else.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting, I too am not an expert, and all I have to go off of is my own experience, double referencing articles, blogs, and videos on the internet. Looking back at it now I agree with you, I would have used a higher grit paper between primer and base coat, but only into the 600-800 range. 400 seems a bit aggressive and is still a grit that is used for sanding out imperfections, and had this paint job not had a glitter coat on top of the base coat probably would have shown sanding marks. Personally, I have heard of breaking up paint session but I believe that working with spray paint, waiting for a few hours to 24 hours between coats would be more likely to cause paint failure. (You would be better off waiting 48 and then scuffing the paint before reapplying.) ideal re-coat times are 10- 20 minutes not exceeding an hour, based on 21°C/70°F - 50% relative humidity. Trapped solvents would reveal themselves relatively quick while painting, through the paint cracking. I used all acrylic paints in this project and that's where the 10 minute flash off time comes in play, the acrylics I used would still chemically bond with each other as long as you don't exceed the flash off point of about an hour according to the manufacturer. While lacquers need more dry time between coats and can melt chemically into themselves. You could make an argument for the paint remaining soft when too many coats are applied but once I did let it fully cure before sanding and polishing the paint was hard and crack/ wrinkle free. I'm not wanting to misleading anyone, (and I'm NOT saying you are accusing me of doing so) I'm just showing how I achieved a killer metal flake finish with economical paint that just about anyone can get a hold of. All I can do is show people the final results I had. since this guitar has been finished it's been about 6 months and has been on at least one active tour through the greater parts of Mexico with its band and still looks like the day it left my shop... Just watched your videos for this guitar. Absolutely awesome job. I am in no way, shape, or form a painter, so I've been doing a lot of research and your videos have been extremely helpful. I plan to paint an Xbox Series S, but I don't want to just slap on a can of black paint. Your videos have giving me some great ideas. My plan is to have the the base color be black, but I want to have a rich metal flake effect, and a hint of purple, or maybe Xbox green, kind of like flashing through the paint as it is viewed it from different angles. (I don't know how to properly explain it.) This is a project I'll complete over the next few months, as I have take time collecting all the various things I'll need (budget constraints), but I'm going to keep watching your videos and learning. When I'm ready to start, I think I might record my process and upload to KZbin. Anyway, just wanted to say, you're awesome and thanks for sharing your skills.

Is it wise to trust the previous paint job? I mean, you're not sanding down to the wood but only like half way through the clear coat. How do you know what KIND of paint or clear was on there and whether the new paint and primer will actually play nice and stick? I was 99% sure it was a factory paint job from Gibson, and they use a nitrocellulose lacquer as a finish. That type of lacquer can be painted over with paint that uses acetone as a thinner. The Rust-Oleum filler primer I used is an acrylic based with acetone thinner. So that's why I didn't take it to the wood, and regardless of the type of paints that are used, at the very least you would want to sand the old finish to a provide a tooth for the the new paint to grab into. @@IronGordon I checked out rustoleum primer and glitter paint on amazon from your link. 51% 1 star reviews I think on the glitter one. ! So, I am still trying to find a primer that will work. I actually called them and they said there is some Zinsser primer 1 2 3 or something that should work well with either oil or acrylic so I may give that a try but local Walmart didn't stock it. It wasn't perfect, but the other tele clone I ripped down and did a gold flake on is almost done. It's getting glazed today, and hopefully it comes out well. I wish I had the skill to do the next level job you did, but I'm not there yet. That Virgin Mary guitar paint job is bloody amazing, BTW. I think I may try to do either a jazz master or a les paul jr eventually. Oh dang that sucks... I was concerned about thecoverage as well because this glitter spray paint is essentially a clear coat that has colored glitter in it. that's why I lay down a base color of the metallic silver to get everything to be a consistent silvertone. I've been doing a guitar body in Rustoleum Metallic Gold and have been struggling the whole way...by struggling I mean making it up as I go along with varying levels of success. I'm at the clear coat point and I was reading about waxing because I saw how hard it was to maintain the color with sanding. I just did a test yesterday between the glaze you used a clear enamel.The glaze seems to have changed the color the least. I feel like this video totally validated my train of thought on this project. Thanks so much for all the tips in this video and the second part is truly amazing. Great job.

You do your best filming then you put it together in edits and go uh..... damn, I didn't get my primer drying shot! oh well, we'll just use the sparkle shot there. :) I am going to try SOMETHING like this soon but I am not sure I'll be getting what I envision. I will do silver then some green and yellow color in poly then more glitter (larger) then try to clear all that and see what happens. ? I will test first on some cardboard and see if the result is ok. I need to write the dry time down so I can know how long between my coats. I have no idea. it's a water based poly I'm buying. thx!

I'll have enough problems probably without trying to film it. and plus, too many haters saying I did this wrong or that wrong. haha I ordered some polyurethane (water based) in a can and got some various glitter and also some transtint green and yellow dye. So... I SHOULD be ok but I want to see about spraying the glitter so I need to find out how big my needle is (pause) in my spray gun. It prob needs to be about 1.8 (mm?) but I don't know how to measure mine. I guess I'll have to snoop online and see how to go about finding out the diameter and if I need a bigger needle to shoot the big glitter. I can prob paint with a brush but I think spray will give a better result and thinner coats overall. ty!!

As a guy with limited experience with spray cans, I am very impressed! I see the name Rust-Oleum and I'm even more impressed. I saw one of their colors I just had to have ("Pearl White" I believe) and went ahead with it. I'm used to using plain ol' nitro, which is easy to work with, but the Rust-Oleum just would not dry completely. I let it go for a couple months and it was still soft enough for a thumbnail to make a mark. I didn't know if it'd be safe to clear coat, so I took it off and started over with something else. You made working with "off the shelf" spray cans look easy. Good job!

I saw Billy Zoom play a Gretsch in similar silver sparkle finish in '82 and his tone destroyed, not the other way around. Brian Setzer has a Gretsch signature model with a green sparkle finish. They're all applied in a similar way. Base primer, color coat, glitter, then thick clear glaze

Hey man ! I wanna say thanks ! I make a lot of guitar build projects, they are all green day replica’s. I always wanted to spray paint a silver sparkle, but i kept going away from it because i was scared the sparkle wont look good enough. I mean i dont know what size flakes i should get etc etc. Thanks to you i now know what spray paint i need to get to make it look spot on. Thanks a lot man, i will def give a shoutout to you for this !!! It looks amazing, this was very straight forward simple video !

Awesome dude thank you! The glitter / flake can definitely detour people because of the clear that's needed to smooth it out. But I've successfully pulled off this technique for art piece backgrounds and then on this guitar. I think it's a great simple solution for the diy people!

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,As a paint and body man...let me add..."WHEN YOU WET SAND...SAND EVERYTHING IN THE SAME DIRECTION"....NO circular motions...no up and down, then, side to side....sand lengthwise...one direction and clean clean clean between coats. But don't be fooled....I am going do to a Stratocaster body EXACTLY as what this video shows to do....I just always wanted a gold flake guitar...I love this video~!

I followed the exact procedure. I did not skip the sanding and the Mequiar’s Ultimate Compound. Now I have a gold sparkle Mod Collection Gibson without having to pay a Mod Collection price. Thankyou. 😊
