Get a merchant, they sometimes sell the items necessary for other deckhands. One time I had an offer for 10 notebooks, and I just kept purchasing it every 20 minutes until I had 100 of them.

If ur focusing on speed I'd recommend warship willow sailcloth instead of warship armchair sailcloth, because the willow has 12 and archaic has 11

TIP:as he said Pearls will be the hardest to get to upg ur crews i suggest getting pearls in the Dark sea Each island shores in the dark sea HAS SO MANY pearls in there

they spawn in the big clams in diving spots and underwater structures with a air capacity swim speed set and a good structure u can farm 100 pretty fast
