Easiest way to remember the sizes is do like Americans. 3x5, 8x11, 4x6, etc.

They aren’t equivalent. Close in some cases, but not the same. This is the worldwide standard, so it is worth remembering.

A4 is what we call 8 by 11.

Absolutely worthless. You miss the big idea: design a system whereby, after folding a sheet of paper in two parts, the ratio between length and width remains the same. I you have a sheet y cm by 2x cm, make the dimensions as follows: y/2x = x/y. Or 2.x squared = y squared, which gives y/x = square root of 2. This root 2 is the secret of this system !

Hans, you are right but that is not the point I am trying to make. If I am holding a A4 paper in my hand I can easily imagine what the size is of an A2 paper. That’s the point I am trying to make!
