With the prep work done, the team rolled on three thin coats of gelcoat without waiting for it to dry in between coats. By waiting for a non-windy day and taking their time, they were able to achieve a beautiful, even finish.

Nice, easy and quick video. Thanks for sharing. When did the gelcoat start to gel, I mean, once you activated it, I guess you had to roll pretty quick and not mix too much gelcoat at once for the entire boat? Could you like do one entire side with one mix?

Thank you for the feedback. Correct small batch mixed. Covered maybe 1/2 the side but it was a very thin coat. Needed two to three coats to completely cover

Great video! I have a 1990, 17’ Newport, Boston Whaler. What brand of Gelcoat did you use? And most importantly, will rolling Gelcoat on nonskid deck work by using a rolling? I purchased the boat last year and put a new Mercury 90 4stroke on it. It had screw hole after screw hole in the deck, I patched with white two part epoxy. My deck is a light tan color. Thanks, your boat looks great! Rod

Yes you can roller on epoxy. It will not come out as smooth as spray but for a work boat like mine its fine.

How’s the gel coat holding up ? Using the total boat gel coat with wax , working time is about 10 minutes. How do you paint the whole boat this fast in that time or can you do sections?

I used gel coat with wax. Not from total boat but should work the same. I rolled on a very thin coat then went right back over with second coat before the first dried.Do all you cutting it first so once you start rolling you dont waste any time.

How do you make the gel coat so smooth? Like how do you not have any bumps from the roller or any roller marks.

Its really just making sure the hull is light sanded and then thin layers using a small 6" fine roller. Not hard at all. You will end up with some orange peel type texture but for a skiff Im fine with that.

That is the trick. As long as the first coat has not completely cured you can add additional coats. I was able to get three coats onto this boat. If the first coat dries you would have to lightly sand and wipe down with acetone before applying second coat

You absolutely could do that. I was just going for a bay work boat. No need for high gloss

I sanded lightly with 80 grit and then wiped down with acetone. Only thing I did different was I used a standard roller and put the gelcoat on a bit thicker. On the outside of the hull I was trying to get a smooth surface

just pick up the same boat making mine a tiller version with a brand new honda 40

I went with a 50 only because they did not have any 40's in stock. Mine is actually to fast with the 50. You will love the 40 but will most likely need a tiller extension arm
