Bought it yesterday on a whim because I couldn't handle the noise from my Oase FiltoSmart 300 any longer. I considered the Fluval Fx2 for better performance, but the built-in heater is a game changer for aquascaping. I'm already thrilled about the upgrade, even before setting it up, since maintenance had become a total nightmare (taking 4 hours!). The filter overflowed repeatedly, despite securing the flaps tightly. The impeller started making some noise after about 15 months of use and goes back to silent mode after a bit of lubricant but after 3 years of decent service, the noise and maintenance issues became unbearable, and simply lubricating or replacing the impeller would only fix 1 problem. Enduring a 4-hour struggle isn't an option anymore. Thank you for taking the time to mention the impeller maintenance. It's crucial to understand this and to choose filters with overflow protection, especially during power outages.

I’m glad you are enjoying it. So filters do wear down. The impellers wear down. I know it’s hard to believe but aquarium water carries grit and reducing as much as a half milliliter can affect performance

I think it's important to add that when cleaning the filter it's important to switch the heater off first for 5-10 minutes with the pump still running. This allows the heat generated to be pumped through the filter until the heater is sufficiently cooled. There have been a number of reported incidents of plastic melting / fliter baskets fusing together because of people not letting the heater properly cool down first. Cheers.

It's actually safe to wash the main sponges in tap. The bacteria won't be exposed to the chlorine long enough to significantly reduce their numbers if you're just rinsing them and wringing them out. @primetimeaquatics did a video looking at the science, and back it up with research papers by the American Society for Microbiology and the EPA: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oX-Yd2unbMZ5fcksi=nrhwpf5TBUsqL-7M

Followed the pro tip on the tube installation 👍 definitely made life easier for setup- Now if this thing will stop purging air every 20 seconds… Going to lead off with hose clamps and try to turn the flow down a little- then move on to the pre filter tube drilling mod to give it some more flow if the first steps don’t work. Little air bubbles can be annoying! And not going to lie the included plastic bits seemed a bit cheaper than other competitors, especially at this price point. Thank you for the setup video tho!

Hi, so we run multiple biomasters at the store, 250, 350's and 850 and dont have any issues with air after a day of it running from new. The plastic bits work well- take them out of the bag. On the larger units i like to run from the bottom: the 1plastic helix, 2 matrix or siporax, 3 purigen plus sera clear polishing pads, the rest stock. I will tell you the less you mod them, the better they run and super quiet. make sure your hoses are super straight and not looped over. I even run one tank with the oase UV sterilizer, but all the hoses are very vertical. Ive see issues where the hoses are too long, that causes air bubbles.
@bshaut11 ай бұрын
@@natureaquariumsusa yeah I’m assuming air is getting in somehow the hoses are all but taught. I have since restricted the flow on the discharge and the intervals have dropped from seconds to minutes 🤔 so I will trouble shoot and report back. I think a little playing with the media some-maybe some clamps and improved flow might be the answer, what has me scratching my head is how turning down the flow improved the purging. Got this over another fx6(never purges hoses are straight connnections are rock solid etc) on my 125 because I liked the heater idea…. We will see how it plays out! I want to love it Lol and not giving up just yet

And when i do need to clean out the tubes and pipes, do i just take out the inlet and outlet from the tank when im doing a full maintenance on it?
@natureaquariumsusa Жыл бұрын
Great questions. So no. When you just clean the pre filter it holds the prime in the filter so when you re insert the cartridge with the pre filters and open the right valve it purges the air and is ready to go. In case of a major clean when you take the filter to the sink to clean the baskets the prime is held in the tubes by the tube valve that pops off when you move the right lever to the “unlock” position. If you need to clean the pipes then re priming is very easy it’s one pump. When you are ready to buy it, check it out on our website. I will post a discount code for the Oase canister filters here in the comments by tomorrow for anyone watching and reading this to enjoy and use.

Fantastic video. Question for you. Why do you suggest to have the bio media on the bottom shelves vs near the top? From what I’ve seen online most filters go sponge (mechanical) then chemical and bio. Wouldn’t you want the sponge first to keep your bio clean? Any info or feedback from your experience would be greatly appreciated 😀
@natureaquariumsusa Жыл бұрын
Great question. The answer is that the pre filter cleans all the water of mechanical debris. The media included is of the fluidized type so the greatest turbulence will be at the bottom. The rest of the baskets are for bacteria, chemical filtration. Most of the gunk removal is done at the pre filter.

I want to put fluval Zeo for ammonia removal. I bought oase 600. Can I put it in the tray above the last tray ?
@natureaquariumsusa4 ай бұрын
Hi. Any media can be placed above the bio at the bottom. On a side note the zeo should only be used for hospital tanks where you are dosing strong antibiotics. The biological media when cycled properly is what pulls out all of the ammonia. Zeo only can pull so little ammonia out of the water that it’s a waste. When setting this filter up just add a good quality bacteria and in 3-4 weeks the media handles all of it.

Why are you putting the biological media at the bottom if you're gonna have sponges after them? Doesnt it make more sens to put the bilogical media after the mechanical filtration?
@natureaquariumsusa10 ай бұрын
Hi. The pre filter handles cleaning the water. I am following the flow as the engineers designed this filter. See the water goes through the 60ppi pre filter and then first (from the bottom - up) to the helix fluidized media. It needs maximum flow and turbulence caused by the bottom layer - then up to the upper chambers.

A different biological media like matrix should be in the top last busked after a fine filter pad at least 100 micron.
@natureaquariumsusa7 ай бұрын
No. The way the bio masters work the pre filter handles the cleaning of the particles. Then it needs to fluidize the helix media so it tumbles for ammonia reduction. Then you can do matrix, purigen and micron polishing pads. This is not your typical canister.

@natureaquariumsusa Жыл бұрын
Hi. Actually that is the way Oase designed the filter. Wether you agree or not you are entitled to your opinion but they designed it so that their fluidized media sits at the bottom and then the water flows to the rest. As a premier Oase retailer I will always show the way the manufacturer designed it.

By the way they are a little noisy when first hooked up and air is in all the sponges. After a day they are super quiet. We’ve sold hundreds of these and they all work out the same way.
@pondguru Жыл бұрын
@@natureaquariumsusa While the media they include is designed for use in fluidized filters the media does not move as intended in a canister filter. It is static and since plastic is a hostile environment for bacteria it supports very little bacteria - from an efficiency point of view it would be better to swap out the Hel-x media (plastic media) for something which was much more suited to bacterial colonization (good quality ceramic / sintered glass media).
@natureaquariumsusa11 ай бұрын
So there are a couple of answers to your point. One is that plastic holds on to the aerobic bacteria quite well. The amount they provide if properly placed in the bottom tray out of the nylon bag will actually bounce around. This is by design and it works much like a wet dry filter with plastic bioballs. Remember in a fw tank with gravel or aqua soil a lot of the anaerobic bacteria will live there. I personally like using the the bottom tray with the helix plastic media provided and the second tray I remove the sponge and add matrix or siporax to supplement and increase the bio media. Remember that they use a soft plastic which is porous so it does house the anaerobic bacteria as well. The majority of hang on back filters use plastic for bacteria and are regularly used in bare bottom tanks and perform the nitrogen cycle just fine.
