Technically speaking it's just the seawater with the white vinegar that goes funny in the fermentation of the process but, the fish itself tastes alright , I gave it a go and literally drained all the juices through the toilet ( followed up by a nice cup of bleach ) once that's gone you're left with a sour salty piece of herring. I am Dutch by the way and I speak Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Dutch, English, Icelandic and German so, det var bra å ser Tormannen spise dette måltidet greit

It's kept in an acidic brine where bacteria cannot survive. Just like pickling onions in vinegar.

If you are afraid of bacteria, cheese and yogurt are the ones that you choose worries. Fish in salt or acidic brine is no bacteria involved. But the dreadful fish has smelled like harmful sickness even though it saved to consume.😅

Idk, this is borderline food that is NOT for men… or women, or children… maybe even animals. There are lots of weird food in my home country too, but smell is where I draw the line. I have no issue with foreigners getting turned off by shrimp paste haha, pretty sure even some dogs will refuse to eat it 😅
