I know it can feel that way but it gets easier. I mean it. I used to absolutely suck at it. But using the tips in the video and sticking with it. I found I got better with each mini. Some edges are easier. Like really sharp straight edges. So I focused on them first. To get my paint consistency right and my softness of touch dialled in. Then I moved on to other trickier ones and sure they don’t always go right first time. But that’s ok. You can correct and refine things as you go. That’s all just part of painting. One thing that is for sure. You won’t get better ever, if you never do it. Stick with it. You’ll get there 👍

I know technique matters most, but I struggle with brushes keeping their sharp tips even with cleaning soap and all. What would be the least expensive brush you'd suggest for this specific task?
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Жыл бұрын
So, I recently made a video on paintbrush basics. It includes some pointers on types of brush, brush loading cleaning etc. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZmleZSOnZ2codE which I would certainly recommend you give a watch, if you haven’t already. In terms of what brush would I recommend to keep a sharp point? For sure it would be one with kolinsky sable bristles. As they are the best suited bristle for the job and being a natural hair, it means the conditioners in paint soap help to nourish and keep them clean and soft. Personally I’m a fan of Artis Opus series S brushes and for edge highlights I use a 00 bit.ly/42NKGLH Hope that helps 👍
@HeadHunterSix
@HeadHunterSix Жыл бұрын
A couple more things I'd recommend: A nice, even (but light) pressure to ensure the line stays smooth and of uniform thickness. It's best not to pick at an edge bit by bit. Holding the model in such a way that strokes are toward yourself when possible will help to make a nice, even line. Most importantly, the consistency of the paint matters. I recommend thinning it with a bit of flow improver or drying retarder, to ensure it stays moist on the brush. If the paint is drying on your brush, you have to try harder to get it onto the surface, and it can affect the line you're making.

Do you edge highlight before or after you use shade paint?
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, you can do it either way. Generally, I’ll edge after using shades in order to get a brighter, crisper highlight. However, if I’m painting something I want a softer result with less sharp edges, like a horse for example. I’ll apply a wash after to help blend the transitions together

I never know what color to use for highlighting
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Жыл бұрын
Colour choice is a very personal thing. The standard is simply a lighter colour of the one you used as a base. Base + white for example, but there really isn’t any rules to it. I’ve highlighted black with grey, blue, purple for example and they can all look good. Best thing to do is play around and see what you like. Also, browse through pics on the internet for inspiration too. There’s really no rules

Unfortunate when you make a mistake over a mixed color that you don't have immediate access to though
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides 6 ай бұрын
As a general rule, I’ll always keep a dry sample of a mixed colour on a palette sheet or sprue etc while I’m painting a model / unit. So I have something I can test against if I need to mix more up later. I have a bit of a catalogue of them now to be fair and they’ve saved me quite a few times on occasions just like you described 👍

@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides The tips definately helped. But its hard to edge highlight the parts that are obscured by hands or weapons. Maybe next time ill paint and highlight before glueing everything together.
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides 2 жыл бұрын
oh that's always a problem. I often paint in sub assemblies to be able to paint details behind other pieces, as it bugs me if I don't paint details I can see. Usually, it only means keeping a single piece off so you can paint behind guns and shields are the main culprits :D
@HeadHunterSix
@HeadHunterSix Жыл бұрын
@@mrbmr Here's my rule of thumb: If you can't get a brush to an area, don't do it. Chances are it's not going to be visible there anyway, or that realistically a highlight would be absent or diminished in that area in real life.

Getting a feel for which colours to use is something which comes with time. My advice as a beginner is to find a picture of a paint job you like and to ask what colours (paints) the artist used to achieve it. @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for giving it a watch man. Not a dumb question at all. So, the answer is yes but with a little explanation. In this example I did a high contrasting highlight to make it obvious what I was painting. If I was painting something which was more subtly layered and shaded, I would still apply a final edge highlight in just the same way but I would use a colour with was much more subtle and natural

You might be surprised to discover the visual effect that can come from an edge highlight on an already layered surface. It tricks your eye into perceiving the color of the entire surface a bit differently, that is to say it enhances the highlight on the whole area, not just the edge that the paint is actually applied to. A very helpful illusion.

Edge highlighting isn't hard per se but my biggest problem is the same as when I'm blending. These things are supposed to be a bit subtle but when you're doing it feels GLARINGLY obvious and so it feels like it looks like crap. Stop looking at it for a minute or move it far away from your face to get a good feel for if it is crap or not.

It’s true, especially because wet paint is often a very different tone to when it’s dry. Getting into the habit of reviewing the mini from different distances as part of the process is important to do. I’m also a firm believer in not over reacting when you feel a paint job isn’t going well. Instead of stripping it and starting again, I force myself to put it to one side and look at it again the following day. Fresh eyes see things differently 👍🏻

How do you know which is the best color to edge highlight? For example, what color do you use to edge highlight red?
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides 4 ай бұрын
Well, there’s no real rules to how you decide, as you can have quite a lot of creative freedom with it. For example, blue highlights on black looks great. Generally though, you would just go with a lighter tone to the colour you’re highlighting You can get this by adding white, or cream or yellow etc depending on the colour you’re wanting to lighten. I’m now thinking there’s a whole video on this topic. Red is an odd one, as you generally need to either go the orange / yellow route or the pinks Up to you really

When I attempt an Edge highlight, I don't have a choice between a thick edge highlight, or a thin edge highlight Lol! Infact I don't have the choice of doing a straight edge highlight, that actually follows anywhere near the edge.
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides

That sounds like your brush is too overloaded. Try doing the testing on your hand first to make sure it’s able to paint a nice thin line before risking touching it to the model 👍

You already have a thicker highlight on the model, is that one also applied with this edge highlighting or do you paint that on normally to be thicker?
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides 2 жыл бұрын
The thicker highlight was done in just the same way, using the edge highlighting techniques shown in the video. The only difference is to get a slightly thicker line I changed the brush angle I used and applied slightly more pressure so more of the brush was in contact with the edge. Hope that helps. Thanks for checking out my channel 👍🏻

@BrushstrokePaintingGuides
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Жыл бұрын
Give this a watch, it will explain brush loading kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZmleZSOnZ2codE And then in terms of paint thinness, yes it should be slightly diluted. But only so that it flows from the damp brush cleanly. If you’ve not already done, then I’d recommend watching my paint thinning video too Let me know if you still have questions 👍
@Uruluke

 @BrushstrokePaintingGuides Thank you. I somehow missed the guide on painting basics, it is also very useful. Now, in conjunction with this video, everything became clearer to me. Paint thinning video is of the greatest value to my mind since it gives the understanding that is not clear on the first sight - "water evaporates from the paint, and paint lays smoothly".
