Watch Jordan Peterson's "Vision & Destiny" on DW+ bit.ly/3KrWbS8
Peterson draws upon his extensive research and relatable real-life experiences to illustrate how to develop attainable goals for intimate relationships, meaningful friendships, and your career. Transform the chaotic potential of the future into actuality - with a vision.
Dr Jordan B Peterson and Jeff Sandefer discuss the k-12 education machine, its origins and failures, and how the Acton Academies are making leaps to correct the system.
Jeff Sandefer is an entrepreneur and Socratic teacher. He started his first business at 16 and graduated from Harvard Business School. Jeff has started and runs many successful companies, his most recent being Sandefer Capital Partners, an oil and gas investment firm with several billion dollars in assets. He has also started multiple academic programs and schools, such as the Acton School of Business, whose students were named the “most competitive MBA’s in the nation” by the Princeton Review. This has since extended into k-12 with the Acton Academy, a cutting-edge program that blends a one-room schoolhouse, the Socratic Method, and 21st-century technology to empower each student to change the world.
Dr Peterson's extensive catalog is available now on DailyWire+: bit.ly/3KrWbS8

Hello Dr Peterson. My name is Sharian. I’m not sure if you’ll ever see this comment but I have been wanting to say this to you for a long long time. Thank you Thank you for dedicating your life to help so many people improve themselves and to have a more positive outlook on life. Listening to your podcasts, speeches and interviews completely changed my perspective on life. You encouraged me to seek knowledge and to do better for myself. Showed me how to better express my love to my family and friends. And most importantly to forgive myself. Because of you I am in university now, studying. I am now looking forward to a day where I’ll be a mother. I didn’t even understand how truly valuable that was until i listened to you. So thank you. I hope to have the pleasure of meeting you one day Warm regards, Sharian

I homeschooled my 6 kids K - 12. They are all highly successful adults. They are now considering homeschooling their kids. I couldn’t be more grateful. Phases of Learning by Oliver DeMille, The Underground History of American Education by Gatto, and Free to Learn by Peter Gray are all excellent if you are considering homeschooling.

This mans a genius and a hero. My younger brother had a hard time with reading. To the point public schools had put him in special reading classes for several years. Fortunately for me i never had that issue i was and still am a voracious reader. Im 32 now and still read at least a few chapters a day. But i watched my brother struggle with reading for several years in his middle school years. Im in high-school at the time and i had just had enough of it he was insanely quick with math of any kind so he was not by any means dumb r slow. I convinced him to come with me to the local library. And then i sat him down and asked what he was interested in. What kind of stories did he like what shows did he really enjoy. And then we went around and found him a couple smaller books, thay met his intrest, that were at low to middling reading level. This was all stuff i had read when i was much younger so i had an idea what they were and the level they were at. And it took him weeks to read those few books. But he read them. Something he had never managed before. Hed never managed to finish an actual book on his own time before. It was amazing to see. And then he came to me and asked to go find more books. By the end of the year he was reading at normal level. By 18months he was reading above his grade level and had surpased all of his reading issues. Intrest is absolutely KEY to a kids development. And public schools are near worthless at that. I was able to get my brother on a path to bettering himself and growing in less than a year when the school spent several years sticking him in special classes and seeing zero improvement for him. By simply seeing the problem and pushing him towards what interested him. And he did the rest. Work with your kids interests. If you can put those interests into relation to what you want them to learn and understand they will do the work for you. Your job is only to guide them on a very general direction and let them grow.

I was the same absolutely hated to read, one year my oldest sister got me a book which I immediately threw in a drawer and left for a couple years, then I got bored one day and opened the book I didn't put it down until I finished it, which probably took the better part of a week. That single book sparked a love of reading that could never have been forced, if I hadn't come to the book I don't think I would have fell in love with reading the same way.

@@whousa642 I'm meaning the in the most fundamental sense. Not in the literary, logos. It's the snakes in your head, making you afraid. And snakes symbolize evil in some real sense. And when on a plane, it combines fear of confined spaces with the fear of snakes and on top of that (puts hands on top of each other) the fear of dying from a plane crash. And you want to yell into the abyss; "Enough is enough. I've had it with these mothereffin snakes on this mothereffin plane!" But you are too paralysed by fear, so you cheer in relief when Samuel L Jackson does it for you. In some sense he is Jesus saving mankind from the snakes. Snakes on that plane. But it depends on what you mean by Jesus and dying. He did die. But came back. As a black man. In a movie. Fighting the evil snakes of time.

My son is 19, he started his education in a steiner kindergarten that he absolutely loved going to. When he started mainstream school, he hated it, he used to cling to the bannister at home crying he didn't want to go. I called the school one morning to say its no good he won't be in school today and the teacher started to penalise me about how late he was yesterday, I explained because he needed calming down and reassuring before I could get him there and she responded with "my son used to be the same for 3 years, I felt like throwing myself in the canal but he is OK now" That was enough for me, I told her we are home educating as from today" and we never looked back.

Ma'am, may I ask (creator of the comment Seabreeze Designs) what is the "steiner" program? I am a young 30 year old mother, of a going on 2nd grader (daughter) and starting Kindergarten (son) who's tempted to remove them from school.... However, my kids are the type that thrive off of social lives, and being home would ruin their personality, but the schools are wack, and they truly aren't teaching future adult life skills, government skills, manners, discipline and plain academia is now dismissed. I'm searching for something that's the beat of both worlds. My kids also are above average on their current levels of academia. My 5 year old is doing beginners multination and my 7 year old is a bored in 1st grade. Not because of any special time spent teaching them at home, they just are that smart. I need to nurture this, and I am homeschooling them, I won't he able to educate them with the proper curricula at the fast pace they learn on. Thank you for reading all of this.

@@taylarwalker17 I think the "Steiner" program is most likely an American version of the works of the Austrian Rudolf Steiner. His philosophy of "Anthroposophie" is extremely popular in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and is the foundation of teaching in the so called "Waldorfschools" / or "Free Schools", which are essentially open to the public but not controlled by the state. It's the biggest "franchise" of non-governmental schools in Germany.

Too many people have been killed in schools. Unfortunately a lot of parents can't teach their children at home because of work, lack of insight, organization and patience. I remember my mom telling me one day that she was told not to teach any thing to the child at home. I never heard of a Steiner school. What is it like? Montessori were supposed to be very good. I would try to provide learning at home after school by giving my kids creative opportunities, work with a globe, and a lot of word play. Jr high/high school/ on top of several moves/ and dad's personality nearly ruined their lives. It's been a rough go but their intelligent enough now to get over the past... but the underlying triggers occasionally blow up. I began homeschooling in 1983 when there was a real threat of arrest and very little direction. A group called Unschooler Network (?) advised me to proceed in a manner that would set good precedents. I had discovered by achievement testing that all students were a full year behind their 1963 counterparts. Probably the most important thing I learned was the importance of leading the children into a desire to learn and a commitment. The year spent in Montessori School was valuable. When I sought out teaching material I saw the deterioration of quality in textbooks. I can't imagine how poor the material is forty years later. (I made a set of vocabulary flashcards taken from the SAT goals. After working on the cards, I was able to speed read some books I thought the kids would enjoy. Highlighting and taking sample sententences from Dr. Who and Star Wars as well as biographies and stories of history that proved valuable. It's incredible how much time is wasted in public schools. You find there is time for fun learning, too. Even so, mothers today are committed to their own careers and the thought of sacrificing time and money by putting children first still isn't properly respected.

Unfortunately, I've found Dr. Mate to have a judgmental tone when referring to Jordan (he doesnt name him but obviously refers to him) and sometimes straw mans his ideas. For instance, he criticized Jordan for saying that children should not be comforted when having tantrums and instead be allowed to "return to normal" because comforting them will reinforce bad behavior. Gabor has said that children should be allowed to express negative emotion as it is their defrnse against the world. Theyre obviously referring to different things. Jordan has always advocated for "shadow" integration to become yoyr best self. What he meant by not allowing tantrums to be reinforced is obviously so that children learn how to communicate their emotions in a better manner instead of trying to use aggression. Gabor took this and distorted it to imply that Jordan says childrens emotions should be disregarded. He also takes an overly maternal, smothering approach almost instead of the balance between maternal care and paternal responsibility that Jordan advocates. So I dont think he'll come on if invited. I hope I'm wrong though.

@@tonyshine89 I agree but there seems to be a cut off point in the divergence of their approach. It's as though both men agree with the fundamental principles of theorists like piaget but draw different interpretations from the research. Peterson seems to take an expression of one's emotions in childhood as a task to be taken and understood by the child and Maté seems to gravitate towards suppression as detrimental to emotional development. Hopefully, they get to discuss it. Have a lovely day and thanks for your comment✌️

@@dranreb1118 your observations are indeed true. I was quite disappointed when I heard the subtle Peterson reference by Mate when interviewed by Rogan. I actually disagree with Dr Peterson on the suggested time out during tantrums in a attempt to make the child learn social behaviour. I strongly agree that children learn social behaviour by the day to day behaviour of their parents and other grown ups around them. Doesnt matter if they throw tantrums due to their still underdeveloped brain, when they outgrow the phase of tantrums, then they will stop. So in this sense I disagree with Dr Peterson. In any case, there is a proper and respectful way to disagree and so far Dr Mate didnt cross that line, but is slowly getting there.

I was an abandoned child and did not learn to read till I was eighteen. Then you never saw me without a book for the next fifteen years. I end up becoming a manager in silicon valley then I raise the family on an organic farm in Ohio where I educated my children on the farm. We lived amongst the Amish and I tell you I think the one-room schoolhouse is a very important thing to try and establish in America but possibly impossible.

Jordan I respect your work and serious discussions with amazing guess Jeff Sandefer. I have a tough time when I used to go to school and with my mom. So now i'm learning how things work so I can get through hard times.

This is amazing. I wish I had gone thru something like this growing up. The closest I got was Space Camp and a business & investing camp.

After finishing school and college, I am working at a bullet factory making money to pay off debts, buy essentials, and buy supplies for my hobby/business. I don't exactly love my job but it's a good fit for my autistic mind. I want to do something that fits my skills but I don't know anyone who can take the time to mentor me, besides I haven't been taught how to take risks and how to bounce back from a fall. I hope that more schools like Acton Academy hop up around the world and help kids that are different.

An outstanding interview! The Acton Academies and other alternatives to the current system of public education remind me of what education was like before the Prussian model spread in the West. Education was provided at a more personal level, a local level, and guided more by the instructor, whoever that might be. Very interesting things to think about, and hopefully this movement will replace the current indoctrination factories.
