Great video. I just received my Prius EPAS pieces today to be installed in my ‘66 Mustang.

Jeff, Test it first. I had a bad one and glad I tested it. Make sure it's wired right testing or it will kill it. I think the one I had was damaged by someone wiring it wrong and returned it. The big wires backwards kills it. My vid says the correct wiring. one thing to add for you. I would slide a steel pipe sleeve on between the EPAS and the gear box. then after welding the shafts, slide that outer "pipe" over the weld and weld that too. Or something like that to increase the strength. I have not had a problem but it's simple and strong insurance. Besides, there is room in the firewall outer tube for the extra shaft diameter.

Very nice video of the install. I'm looking to install a Corolla unit in my 66 this winter.

I'm just getting started this on a '63 Nova. My power unit is an '09 Corolla. It looks pretty much like yours. The park brake handle is in the way and if the unit is turned 180 it hits the brake pedal mount. Tomorrow I'm going to get a Saturn Vue unit because the motor is mounted on the other side. Best part, I have to retain the column shift! Paint it semi satin black and it will "go away".

Update: I used the '09 Corolla unit and kept the automatic column shifter. It works GREAT!! Now I'm intalling one in my '36 Chevy coupe.

Nice installation. I'll bet you can fix that self centering issue with more caster. Modern tires like to have a lot of caster.

Great informational video. Any long term thoughts since you installed this? Things you might do different or changes? Did you fix the centering issue? Should be able to get most of that out with alignment. Do you feel that the potentiometer for adjusting assist would be worth adding. Also, just thought that by welding the shaft onto the steering box. you would not be able to replace the upper seal in the steering box if needed. Probably won't need to if the box was rebuilt before all of this work though. Thanks

I am happy with it. Works perfectly. I've just been too busy to look into increasing caster. Someday I hope to, but I guess I just don't notice anymore.

I am still happy with it and I can't think of anything I'd change. I did mega pack the steering box with grease prior to install and being the car is a 66 that I drive 1,000 miles/ year I'll be dead before the box needs service.

I have a new to me 64 F250. It has been a minute since I had a manual steering rig. It may totally be me but the steering seems extremely hard and it even has a bit of a crazy road hop that sends me toward the guard rail. Newbie question but do you think there might be more to my front end that should be addressed? Before attempting this conversion? Or just do it and deal with king pins or other items after the conversion? Thanks

Did you know they came out with a switch that will adjust the sensitiveness. So turn of a knob and you can have tighter steering. Got mine from Ebay.

@@ryanlarsen6409 Hey Ryan. It's great. I have not changed the caster. It doesn't feel odd at all anymore. I don't let go of the wheel after a turn. So for that reason I just don't notice it any more. So me thinks why mess with it on a car I drive 1,000 miles/year. (at 16 MPG! cuz it's a 400 hp 351W which is kinda dumb.)

Hi Matt. He told me installing the aftermarket EPAS entailed removing the fresh air vent and that made it a more difficult install. I'm sure the aftermarket unit has no delay upon start up though.

I couldn't tell from watching and maybe I missed it, but do you have long tube headers? I can't see them being a issue. I have manual power steering now is there anything else I would need to change other then what you did in this video?
@klrconcourse1
@klrconcourse1 2 жыл бұрын
My headers are not long tube, and I don't think it matters if they were. everything steering is ahead of the tubes. I am not familiar with all components of original manual steering, but I THINK you would have a simpler job starting out with manual. I added the manual components to make mine work.

is the steering harder then before when the EPAS isn't activated? so for some reason if the system fails is it harder to steer then stock. I guess thats hard to answer as you had power steering prior. probably just adds minor amount of resistance.
@klrconcourse1
@klrconcourse1 2 жыл бұрын
I think it's the same as non-assisted steering. It is driveable if there was an electronic fail for sure. I believe these systems are really reliable. As they need to be if granny was driving her modern car and the steering stopped assisting.
@ShnitzlHaus
@ShnitzlHaus 2 жыл бұрын
Agree. I will be installing one in my 1947 willys cj2a. Bigger tires I upgraded the steering box to a manual Ford box but I want power. This fits the bill and my little engine won’t give up power to a hydraulic pump.
@klrconcourse1
@klrconcourse1 2 жыл бұрын
@@ShnitzlHaus I recommend when you weld the shaft between the EPAS and the steering box, add a sleeve of pipe to the shaft. slide that down and weld it over the same area for added safety. Butt end welding alone worries me.
