That was the joke she was trying to make, yes. "Singapore is like Malaysia's ex that had a glow up and makes Malaysia regret breaking up." She went too far with the MH370 joke tho. Personally, as a Malaysian, the joke about how we are still developing and how advanced Singapore is is totally fine since most of her statements are correct except for the fact that Singapore was already an important trade route to begin with at that time. The British will literally sacrifice Malaysia for Sg tho. What's triggered Malaysians the most is her joke on the missing plane, the tragedy that has yet to be solved. Plus, our society as a whole is quite sensitive and conservative compared to the US for example. In this era where everything is one click away, you need to be mindful of your words or you may be attacked like her in this case.

As a Malaysian looking at her video. One of the reason why we’re angry is something. The whole Malaysia and Singapore go separate way is because of the government thing. Like me as a normal citizen after watching her video we might think that: 40 years ago we are not involving in the separating issue. And about still developing country we always know that it’s government long lasting corruption that lead us until now. Like what can we do? We voted the best but didn’t win, we need to face some religion issue(sorry if I sound offending but I didn’t mean anything), we’re facing some bias and all that. Like what can we do? Her ending is okay for me. The comeback is fine cause sometimes we joke about that too. But the f Malaysia and the plane thing is not in our control, but we got blamed. Hope my own explanation is clear, tried my best to describe by text.

As a Malaysian, thank you sushii for covering this. What ticked me off with this whole fiasco wasn’t her jokes about Malaysia being underdeveloped, or her swearing F~U at Malaysia. I mean, I can take a joke. But she cross the line when she made fun about MH370. For many Malaysians, it is a tragedy that many families still endure till this day as there has been no closure or peace. There is fine line between comedy and being offensive. The missing plane tragedy is indeed a sensitive topic, and it's important to consider the potential impact on individuals who may have personal connections or emotional ties to such events. It's crucial to approach discussions and humor with empathy and respect, considering the feelings and experiences of others. Making jokes about tragedies can be hurtful and disrespectful, particularly if it directly affects someone's loved ones. It's always better to exercise sensitivity and choose topics that are inclusive and do not cause unnecessary distress or pain.
@kevint1160

Just stop defending her. Comedy always tiptoes on the line between offensive and funny. One great example would be Dave Chappelle. Even the nastiest thing he joked about, he makes you go, "Hmm, he does have a point". HOWEVER, Jocelyn's "comedy" just comes out as vitriolic and plain insensitive. Even American comedians really have to take extra cautions when it comes to 9/11 jokes and with that said, they rarely want to risk that too. Her "jokes" are nothing more than a hate speech. There was no punchline. Just someone who woke up on the wrong side of the bed and decided to pick the most sensitive topic and bash a whole nation just to test out "what if".

As a Malaysian who is also a huge fan of stand-up comedy, I'm not offended by that part she did the punch-down bit whereby Malaysia is far behind Singapore in terms of development. It's the truth and that's a stand-up comedy so nothing is wrong about using that as materials. The delivery tho, I feel it's so bad and cringe at the same time but that's not what really upset most of the Malaysians. The main and worst thing throughout her whole part of comedy is she made fun of the MH370 tragedy. Even Dave Chappelle is always being careful when it comes to offensive bits. Jocelyn Chia tried so hard and apparently it didn't end well.

As Malaysian I understand comedy should be able to talk bout anything but you have to first truly understand the material and execute it properly. If Dave Chappelle read ntg on Singapore's exit and joke how its Singapore's fault alone without understanding the politics, even he would receive backlash. The reason most Malaysians were offended was her delivery combined with her edgy material, plus her instagram replies defending herself instead of apologizing. And btw spot on Sushi that US audience doesnt understand the big deal here nor the tension and culture back home.

If there is no limits... she should have used 9/11 as content for her show / job at Comedy Cellar in NY (relatable and connecting with audiences, as most comedians said). She knows if she were to use 9/11, she will instantly become a "pulp" on the spot and followed by lawsuits, threats on her 1ife and no more jobs for her in America. Easy and convenient for her to choose a "victim" that does not have avenue to voice objections.

I do think there's a fine line between being funny and being offensive. The jokes about development of SG and MY have been around for a long time, people know about it, laugh about it and ride with it. But to joke about a tragedy, esp as a foreigner, that should never be it. I did not watch the whole thing, but snippets of that made me remember not only 370 but also 17 where these are innocent people and families who were just going on a holiday. It's terrible. It will always be a sensitive topic, and she should tread about it carefully. (Side note: there was a Malaysian in the crowd, I wonder what s/he thinks about it live)

That line is not in the comedian's mouth. It's in the listeners' brains. The same joke at the same performance can be found funny by some, and offensive by others. Do you think that she should be in control of the brains of the audience members?

@@WakenerOne I agree that the difference is in the listeners. That's why she is able to get away unscathed with the American crowd who might be ignorant of this tragedy. She would probably be booed down her first stage if she had done it in SG or MY or perhaps in Asia. I'd say it blew up because she decided it was funny and posted it up on social media. If she hadn't, SG wouldnt have to apologize for this insensitive person who had spent half her life abroad.

People are wasting their time over-analyzing her garbage (about whether she is funny or not, etc etc). Singaporeans and Malaysians are traditionally an easygoing humorous lot and we can certainly take jokes and never had problem having a good self-deprecating laugh at ourselves over our national shortcomings. But it is obvious, from the universal condemnation from Singaporeans and Malaysians alike, from the ordinary men and women on the street to national leaders, that the whole thing is repulsive and tasteless. Can we just dispense with all the analytical BS and simply just admit that this is a clear-cut case of someone engaging in hate speech that is poorly disguised as 'stand-up comedy'. I mean jeez guys, if the shoe had been on the other foot, and some lame-brain decided to make a similarly tasteless joke on Singapore's Silk Air Flight 185.........can you imagine the backlash ? A stand-up like Kumar quite often poke fun at Malaysia and Singapore but we absolutely split our guts laughing to his jokes. But that's because Kumar has always been a class act with a deft touch on what are the acceptable boundaries between comedy and outright abuse.

Apparently, from researching about her background, she came from a typical Asian Singapore family (the type where parents and siblings would aim to be lawyer, engineer or doctor to do well in life). She apparently got an excellent education, went to NUS to study law, become a lawyer and later found passion in stand up comedy when she went overseas in America to study her masters. Quitting a 5 or 6 figure career to do stand-up comedy takes a lot of guts. Suggesting that her parents and brother are still supportive of her career change, it's still common sense that it would be quite risky to do stand-up comedy like we have all seen Uncle Roger got cancelled by China because of what he said. But Uncle Roger is still standing regardless of the backlash. In this case since she was a former lawyer, it made sense that she would make political jokes involving countries like Malaysia. Comparing with stand-up comedians like Uncle Roger and Jimmy O Yang (I watched both of them btw), Jocelyn still needs a lot of work on the delivery of her jokes because from this video, I felt her jokes sometimes lean on the antagonising side in terms of tone and delivery. US audience can laugh at her jokes but we, Singaporeans and also Malaysians, don't take most jokes lightly especially if there is a political element that destroys both countries' dynamics. Not sure if she watched how Uncle Roger got cancelled by China but I hope this controversy can change how Jocelyn views her stand up comedy career. Considering that she is a naturalised American, her roots still come from Singapore despite years of naturalisation in America

Mm yeah i agree…i actually think it may also be because of how much material she has on the sg vs msia thing. Makes it tough to pull off because it almost comes across as personal/petty. I watch jimmy carr, who is offensive on every possible level, but there’s a level of impersonality or equality (lol) to his offensiveness so it’s sort of like everyone and every topic is just fair game to him so you know, people just roll with the punches. Then again, even if she were to adopt a similar style (more variety and less of targetting sg vs msia) and reword her joke more tastefully, it may still get singled out. The risk level of this joke is just no joke man. But at least the joke may have taken off more.

From my little exposure to standup comedies (mainly from youtube videos), facts are usually delivered with a straight face. "Haiya, why wash rice with a collander?!" *Straight face/frown* While punch lines, ESPECIALLY borderline offensive ones, should be delivered with a smile, to send a subconscious cue for your audiences' to laugh, as well as letting them know you are joking. "I wanna do some pounding with Auntie Esther! Sorry children." *Smiles* When you deliver borderline offensive jokes with a straight face/frown, this is what you get. If you joked about a friend's balding wife on stage during the Oscars while smiling, the most you'll get is a slap, but everyone would have been on your side. You see, smiling is the key. Styles are for people who are masters at their craft, when they have the basics down pat, so you can deviate from the beaten path without much risk. Clearly her style of a straight-faced delivery, fell flat, (Absolutely no pun intended), which is high time for her to reassess her style.
