Card stock is a great paper to use for templates. It's used for subscription inserts in magazines. Plain sheets can be printed out or photocopied. Staple a few sheets together (staple through the middle of each shape) and cut out in multiples to save time.

two tip/hints ive found really useful. run the thread through some beeswax it will help prevent knotting, and i starch the fabric so its as stiff as the card, and iron it or simply hold like card into shape, (just cover one of you templates with tin foil so you can use it again and again) that cuts out the need to stitch in and then remove the paper after, it also means you don't need to cut or buy hundreds of little paper templates....

Using ThreadHeaven on the Aurifil thread will keep it from curling and twisting. It makes it slide through the fabric easily, too.

Loved the video! I have a question about the size of the templates. Jen used the paper template to cut out her petal shape in fabric and then used another one to glue down the edges of her fabric to the template. Is the template 1/4" smaller than the cut piece of fabric? I'm beginning an epp project and need this question answered!! Thanks!

Hi Jennifer! Jen only used one template. She chose the Chubby Dresden paper, laid it on her fabric and traced around it. Then used the same template to glue it down on. Does that make since?

Fat Quarter Shop Thank you for your reply!! Unfortunately, it doesn't make sense to me:( If she used the template to cut the fabric, did she add 1/4" to what she was cutting? It seems that you can't use the same size to both cut and then glue/sew a seam without the template being smaller than the fabric piece. If they were the same size, you wouldn't have any extra fabric to glue/sew down. Or am I being crazy?? Thanks again.

Jennifer Garner She traced the piece, and then, what the video skipped mentioning, is that she cut it out with an additional 1/4" beyond the traced line. You don't need to be exact when cutting out the extra fabric around the traced shape, but you need to have a MINIMUM of 1/4" so that you can secure it on the back. Many people who do this type of piecing use precuts, like 2 1/2" squares or strips. When I do hexagons, I use a 4" square for a 3" hexagon. Don't feel that you need to have precise shapes. Hope this helps! :-)

I use 110lb cardstock that I order from stampin up. then I use my silhouette cameo to cut the pattern out. Makes it go real fast and I can cut multiple hexies in no time at all www.stampinup.com/ECWeb/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=140272
