Great video. I suggest adding a comment about what happens if you answer NO to the question: "Are you covered under a Group Health Plan through your own current employment?" at 7:54. When I read "your own current employment" I was concerned for my wife, whom is covered only by my Group Health Plan (she does not have one of her "own"). The video moves on quickly by answering yes. If one answers "NO", a follow-up question appears: Are you covered by someone else's Group Health Plan? (paraphrase). If you answer "YES" to that question, then the process moves along in the same manner as if you had answered "YES" at 7:54. So it's not a huge thing, but it would be nice to see the effect of answering either "YES" or "NO", as was done elsewhere in the video.

Thanks for your feedback. I agree...this is a spot that I wish I would've spent more time on, as people seem to over-think these questions. We will be coming out with a ne video in the next few months that shows how to do a Social Security and Medicare application online at the same time. I made sure to go through more on this part of the application. Thanks. :)

Greetings Andy, Prior to watching your video, I called Medicare, and after being placed on hold for over an hour, I spoke with a representative and asked if he could assist me with signing up for Medicare part A, as I will be turning 65 in a few months, and I’m still working. The representative said I didn’t need to do anything at this time, but if I wanted to sign up for Medicare, I could apply online and was directed to the SS website. Afterwards, I attempted to enroll on the Medicare website, but paused half way through the application process because the questions became extremely confusing. Now, fast forward to your excellent video, which btw provided a clear and concise tutorial to help me navigate through the poorly written language, allowing me to successfully sign up for Medicare part A. Thank you for your research, and using your platform to share this needed information. God Bless you!

@joyfulliving51572 жыл бұрын
Hi great video. Thanks. So when you get your letter in the mail and your card does it give you options in how to pay if you’re not taking your SS yet. Or do they send you a bill for 3 months and the choices to pay on that? What’s your recommendation on how to pay? I heard you won’t want to miss a payment, and with the slow mail at times that might not be best. Thanks for your answers!!
@MedicareMindset2 жыл бұрын
Hi there. You can pay this premium a couple different ways: - Write a check and mail it - Write in a credit card on the payment slip (credit card or HSA debit card) and mail it - Setup an account on medicare.gov and make payment electronically - Or setup automatic payment via the EasyPay form (form SF-5510), which auto drafts the premium from your checking account monthly

What if applicant had employer sponsored insurance while on medical leave? No longer an employee but employer was still insuring. Great video thank yoiu
@andystamas3 ай бұрын
It depends on the timing. If you're turning 65 and in your 7-month initial enrollment period, it won't matter. But if you're more than 8 months after separating from the employer, technically you can't submit a special enrollment period application for Part B. You would have to wait until the general enrollment period between 1/1 - 3/31 to sign up for Part B. You would likely have a late enrollment penalty in that situation. I guess it depends on how your employer would fill out form L564. If they show you as an active employee still, then you're okay. But if they show you separated more than 8 months ago, that's not good.
@tomharty9808 Жыл бұрын
Excellent video, one question though. You say one can initiate the online application 4 months before birthday, but isn't it actually 3 months? If someone has a 4/15/1959 birthday, everything I've read says 1/1/2024 is the earliest but you seem to be saying one could sign up December 2023. Perhaps I misunderstood you. Thanks again for the single best video out there for online medicare application.
@MedicareMindset Жыл бұрын
Everything you hear will mention 3 months prior...but you can submit it in the 4 months prior to your birthday month. So the April 15th birthday example you gave can submit the application as early as December 1st 2023 for benefits to begin 4/1/24. Glad you found the video helpful. 😄

Good video with excellent explanations for the poorly worded questions. I'll be signing up for Medicare & SS to start in a few months. Any videos specific to that so I make sure I get the SS income amount for age 65? and so that I can have the Medicare directly taken out of my SS? I have insurance that ends on my 65th birthday, assume I'll answer that I no longer have a group insurance since it will be gone. Thank you!
@MedicareMindset Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Donna! Glad you found the video helpful. If you also start SS retirement income, your Medicare Part B will automatically be deducted from your SS retirement check. For the employer group coverage question, answer it based on what's true today when you're filing out the application. But really the answers you put for that question won't matter, as you're turning 65...it's irrelevant.
@DonnaCasey-ij8ep Жыл бұрын
@@MedicareMindset Appreciate the quick reply! The comment section will be good to let them know what amount I'm expecting (age 65 amt vs. lower @ 64). Sounds like the order of applying is SS, Medicare A/B & lastly Medicare Advantage (through them). Appreciate all the information~
@andystamas Жыл бұрын
@@DonnaCasey-ij8ep Yeah, you can definitely add a note in the Remarks section, if you feel it's helpful. And you are right...If you're enrolling in Social Security and Medicare at the same time, the SSA site will take you through the retirement benefits portion first, then Medicare A & B. After you get your Medicare card, then you can enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan...OR...Medigap plan and Part D plan. Take care. :)
@mrjb85027 ай бұрын
Fantastic video! I have a quick question. I turned 65 in March and have medical coverage with my employer through June 30, so I want Medicare to begin July 1. This is as late as I can sign up during my IEP. Can I apply in May and specify a start date of July 1 in the note section or must I postpone my application until June 1 to get a start date of July 1. I’m worried about not getting my Medicare card in time to enroll in MedSup and Part D drug plan.
@MedicareMindset7 ай бұрын
In your case, the only way to get a 7/1/24 Part B start date, you would have to wait to submit the application until June. June is month 7 of your IEP, so enrolling that month will yield a 7/1/24 Part B start date. Do you have Part A already? If so, just turn in Form 40B in early June at your local SSA office. Note: They often try to tell people they need form L564 also, but kindly remind them that you are still in your IEP, so Form L564 is not required. If you don't have Part A yet, since it's already May right now...I would just wait until very early June to start and submit the application for A&B. Part A will backdate to 3/1/24 and Part B will automatically start 7/1/24. They will turn it around in time. But you'll likely need to get your Medicare # from your Benefit Verification Letter in your SSA account. You will see that much faster than the card will arrive by mail. I explain how to do that here: www.medicaremindset.com/proof Let me know if you have any other questions. If you prefer, you can just email me at info@medicaremindset.com

Hi! My mom is over 65, was employed and insured under employer until Feb. 5. Any tips on how to enroll in Medicare only? The screen shot in your video differs from the current options on the SSA website. Thank you so much for your input!
@EOliver-vl5vu6 ай бұрын
I figured it out. Since she didn’t sign up during her initial enrollment period when she turned 65, and open enrollment is closed, the system will not let her sign up for Medicare. But she qualifies under an SEP (due to her employment ending) so we need to manually fill out the forms and drop them at our local SSA office.

If existing coverage is a retiree plan (NOT based on CURRENT employment), then you simply answer NO to that section and get to skip all those questions about group health coverage. Go to the 7:00 mark where this is specifically mentioned. Don't overthink it.

If you're covered on a group health plan based on active employment through you or your spouse...AND the employer has 20+ employees...Medicare A & B enrollment is optional. Should you get Part A? As long as you don't contribute to a Health Savings Account (HSA). If you do contribute, then you don't want Part A yet. Add it later, as well as Part B, when you come off the group plan. NOTE: Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) are fine. You can have Medicare and not impact your FSA contributions.

If my employment ends on June30 and my insurance from employer ends August 31, do I answer yes to the question are you covered under group insurance since at this time while filling out application I am employed and insured? I believe I do and then click employment has not ended and health insurance has not ended. Is this correct if I want to be sure that I will start medicare A and B coverage in August when I turn 65.

Great! Yes, answer the employment question based on what is true today...that you're still employed and still covered on that group plan. Employment has not ended, and coverage has not ended at this moment. Coverage will begin 8/1/23...assuming your bday is between Aug 2nd-31st. Then you can either drop off the group plan 8/1/23, since Medicare starts then...OR...have one month of overlap coverage and drop the group plan 9/1/23 and start supplemental coverage.

Enrolling in month 5 automatically yields a 2-month delayed Part B start date...which is perfect in your case (1/1/23 start). But again, this will only work if you haven't started the application yet. If you can start and finish it in November, you'll get a 10/1/22 Part A start and a 1/1/23 Part B start. Please read the details of this very topic on our website at www.medicaremindset.com/iep Contact us at info@medicaremindset.com for further discussion specific to your situation.

Okay, glad to hear you haven't started the application yet. So literally DO NOT start this until early November. Normally, you can leave the Remarks section blank, but it's a good idea in your case to make it clear that you understand your Part B will be delayed 2 months and start 1/1/23. So say something like this..."I understand that by submitting my application in November (month 5 of my Initial Enrollment Period), my Part B will be delayed 2 months and begin January 1st, 2023". Then the SSA rep who processes your enrollment knows you are aware of the delay.

Outstanding video. I will be 65, January 27, 2023. I just completed the application based on your video. I have not submitted the application yet because I have two questions. (I'm Currently Employed) 1. Is it too early to submit the application? 2. How do I get Part C?
@MedicareMindset2 жыл бұрын
John - Thanks for reaching out. I'm glad to hear the video was helpful. To your questions: 1.) No, it's not too early. You can submit the application in the 4 months leading up to your birthday month. 2.) Once you have confirmation that your Part A & Part B are active for 1/1/23 (and you have your Medicare #, which is on your Medicare card)...you can enroll in a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan...if that's the plan type you decided on. Also, you mention you're still employed. If the employer has 20+ employees, the plan doesn't cost you too much, and the coverage is great...then you don't have to leave your employer plan. So did you enroll in Part A only, or both Part A & B?

This video really helped me. I have a question. I'm about to turn 65. I would like to apply for Medicare Part A now, but delay Medicare Part B within the initial enrollment window after I pick my supplement plan. Will I have to pay the penalty charge on Part B if I do not sign up for A and B at the same time?

Lamont - I'm glad you found the video helpful. You won't have a penalty for enrolling in Part B later, as long as you are covered in an employer health plan based on either your active employment or your spouse's active employment. I will turn 65 on Jan 1, 2025. So I can enroll Social Security as early as Sep 1, 2024, right? I am still working and having good insurance with my current company which covering myself and my wife who is 60. Do I just apply for Part A only?
@MedicareMindset9 ай бұрын
If you turn 65 on January 1st, you're actually eligible December 1st, 2024. So it's the 4 months prior to December when you can start to enroll (that would be as early as August 1st, 2024 to submit the application). Yes, I know that seems weird, but it's correct. As long as you don't contribute to an HSA (Health Savings Account), you can surely enroll in Part A ONLY. But if you do contribute to an HSA, then consider NOT enrolling in ANY Medicare while you're on the group health plan based on your active work. Then you can add Parts A & B later without penalty. NOTE: When you eventually enroll in Medicare and/or Social Security in the future, Part A will be backdated 6 months, so watch out. That will negatively impact your HSA contribution eligibility. @andystamas Жыл бұрын
Kari - Because you don't have the quarters, you can't enroll in Medicare online. You need to enroll by phone or in-person with SSA. Part A will be as high as $500/mo, though. But it will be no premium if you have a spouse who is age 62+ and they have the 40 quarters. You can also get Part B at the normal rate, like everyone else (based on income)...which starts at $164.90/mo this year. Please re-watch the first two minutes of this video, as it mentions these items. Thanks! :)

I am unclear when the Medicare part A&B start (birthday Feb 20th) -if i apply 4 months ahead- does it start Feb 1 or March 1? Other question, is if i am already getting social security so i don't need to sign up for a& b- how is Part D added?
@MedicareMindsetАй бұрын
Your start date for A&B will be 2/1. Since you're getting Social Security already, you will automatically be enrolled in A&B. Assuming you're turning 65 in Feb 2025, you should've received your Medicare in the last 2-3 weeks by mail. Part D drug plans, Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans, and Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans are done through the various insurance carriers that offer plans in your area. You would only need those kind of plans if you don't have access to health insurance through active employment of your own or a spouse.

Hello good video. I will turn 65 in August 2023. However I still plan to work for at least another 1 1/2 years and stay on my employer health plan. Should I apply this month (May 2023) for Part A only and notate that I am still employed and covered under employer health plan. Then when I do know my exact retirement date (possibly Dec 2024), I apply for Part B by filling out form CMS 40B, having my employer fill out form CMS L564, and submitting those forms to my local SS office 30 to 60 days before my retirement date. Is that sound correct?
@MedicareMindset Жыл бұрын
Assuming your employer has 20+ employees and you're NOT contributing a Health Savings Account...you can enroll in Part A ONLY and say NO to Part B on the application. Then when you want to add Part B later for the future, I recommend submitting the two required forms to your local SSA office about 2-3 months prior to when you want it to start. You'll want to follow the instructions on our special webpage: www.medicaremindset.com/sep

If applying for Medicare parts A and B after 65 due to losing creditable group coverage, where do you add the CMS form that the employer fills out?
@MedicareMindset Жыл бұрын
Hi Lexi - Thanks for your question. So if you're enrolling in Medicare for the first time, but AFTER your initial enrollment period, then you'll need to first submit the online application for Parts A & B at www.ssa.gov. It sounds like you've done that or are about to. Then submit Forms 40B and L564 to a local SSA office to complete your enrollment. Assuming you're enrolling in Medicare A&B, and NOT Social Security retirement benefits, follow Scenario #2 on our Special Enrollment Period page: www.medicaremindset.com/sep The two forms you need are downloadable through that link.

Curious, will we still need an Medicare agent?
@andystamas Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question. You are not required to work with an insurance agent to enroll in your supplemental medical and drug coverage. But if you do, the agent's services and guidance are complimentary (no cost to you). But make sure the agent is an independent broker who represents multiple insurance carriers' plans AND offers both Medigap and Medicare Advantage plans. There are some agents who push you to one type of plan, and that's because they aren't licensed and certified to offer all plan types. For example, some agents only offer Medigap plans. They don't offer Medicare Advantage (which is right for some people) because Medicare Advantage plans require annual recertification and training.

If you're helping a friend or family member enroll in Medicare online, then you clearly need their permission and will want to have that person there with you. This is because they will receive a text or email from SSA when logging into their SSA account.
