How to Enter the DC SFRA | FAA Flight Plans

The DC SFRA surrounds the Washington DC region. It requires some specialized training, and you need to have a flight plan on file and be talking to air traffic control. Here's a rundown on getting into, and landing at a field within the area.

Enjoyed this video. I took the class, but was still a little confused on some things until I actually did the flight with an instructor. You really summarized it well here. Maybe you could do one on the special flight rules for Destin, Florida/ Eglin Air Base or NYC

Also would love to see more SFRA videos. As a controller in ZDC on Vatsim, I can tell you we plan to incorporate the actual procedures soon so having some type of video to send pilots who are unfamiliar with the procedures would be absolutely fantastic.

I fly out of College Park. SO very familiar with this process since I have to do it every time I fly :) Also, I'll be flying out of Lee tomorrow morning. :)

Flew into Manassas a couple months ago to visit a friend in the DC Area, first time flying into the SFRA. If you're feeling hesitant or slightly intimated by the SFRA, I didn't find it any worse than flying through any controlled airspace. Just take the FAA's free online course, remember to file your flight plan foreflight makes it super easy, and request flight following.

I was recently cleared through the sfra without filing a flight plan. We planned on staying well outside the bravo and sfra but our controller was super easy going and cut some time off our trip for us!

Also Would you mind demonstrating a take off from KVKX to somewhere like Gettysburg? I fly out of there and would love some practice leaving an airport within the FRZ/SFRA and how to communicate properly. I'd love to practice. Thank you for this video as well!

Im extremely interested in this. I live in northern Mass and my father lives in southern VA. I am about to take my check ride and a journey i am excited to make is down to see him. When i plot it i usually stay way clear of the entire DC area, but it adds substantial time and distance to my journey. I would love to know how to cut through or if there is even a way to do so

Do you have to file a flight plan to fly in the DC SFRA? I normally don’t file flight plans, but I fly out of Oklahoma where there isn’t anything this complicated.

Yes, you are required to file an either a IFR or a SFRA VFR flight plan. This isn't a normal VFR flight plan that goes to Leidos Flight Service, but a special type of VFR flight plan used only in the SFRA. You can see that he specifically selected a DC SFRA flight plan for filing on Foreflight. There is a MANDATORY FAA training for pilots wishing to operate in or near the DC SFRA that I encourage you to take - it's free. Also never under any circumstances enter the FRZ (inner ring of the SFRA) - you will be intercepted by an "armed air defense fighter", 100% of the time. They will not hesitate to shoot you down if you head towards Washington. There are procedures to operate to the 4 airports underlying the FRZ which involve flight plans and background checks, but I'm not willing to speak about any of them publicly and risk disclosing SSI.

Would you have two flight plans if you wanted a VFR flight plan from Gettysburg to the SFRA gate and the SFRA flight plan (gate to airport)? What if you were transitioning to say St Mary's? I assume you would need 3 flight plans (VFR FP from Gettysburg to SFRA Gate, SFRA entrance gate to the SFRA exit gate and then another VFR FP from SFRA exit gate to St. Mary's). For folks without Foreflight, I think you actually file an IFR flight plan with RMK/SFRA and the gates in the Departure and De3stination fields. Can anyone confirm this?
