Hello! Thanks for all your free videos here on KZbin. I focus a lot of mixing drums using e-drums with Toontrack "drum sound programs" like EZdrummer 3 and Superior Drummer 3. Cant have noisy drums in an apartment, I'd guess its the same for many home studio users, when creating our music... I think you have a very good way of explaining difficult things like compression for kick, for example... If I could sort of request another video from you in the future, I'd also like to learn how to mix other drum mics, like for example OH and Room, but preferably not recorded using acoustic drums but using e-drums and drum programs (if that makes any difference when mixing drums?). Whenever you have the time ofc, etc please do such a video. Kind regards from Sweden! Take care all! And keep rocking in a free world! 😊

Yes please Sara, i really like your teaching style, its very encouraging. I feel much more confident now on thinking of multiple Eqs as not a mistake but simply a way to all add up to the goal one is trying to achieve, especially in regards to using the Hi Pass, after creating a low Shelve boost. I’m always afraid to do things like this as i simply feel as though I’m doing something wrong, maybe as a result of hearing someone say it was, or just because i think rather along the lines of what you said yourself was that it seems as if it could be counterproductive. Which if done incorrectly it most likely would be, but as you were shaping the low end to achieve that curve in the lowest frequencies it was in fact your desired end you were creating. Bravo, thank you for this tutorial, and more please, time is precious and it must be quite an effort to do these tutorials, but so is the passing on of knowledge and we are all out here soaking up your guidance, your a godsend. Much love from Australia

This was a really great video. I've got into the habit of using larger changes on other tracks but had yet to realise I should be doing it on drum tracks too. Still guilty of making multiple precision moves on the kick and snare and this helped me arrive at a base sound for each in three minutes. Not the ten or fifteen pain staking ones it would normally. Brilliant workflow tips.

Sara, I have analysed your Puig Tech settings (10:00) with PluginDoctor. The actual EQ changes are mininal. Like less than 1 dB. And then only a dip between 2-5k and a rise above 5k. No change in the bass frequencies, except below 20Hz. However, the Puig Tech, unlike the UAD version, has a lot of harmonic distortion. So maybe that is what changes the sound rather than EQ per se.

It's important to note that the filter frequencies shown on most SSL console emulations are very different from what the filters are actually cutting. Check out Andrew Zeleno's video called "Shocking SSL EQ Issue" where he goes through various SSL plugins and shows the differences. As a heads up, this doesn't render the plugins useless, but it is very important to be aware of, especially when learning mixing and frequencies.

Seems like an odd choice to do blues for kick drum being that it’s not really a prominent aspect of that genre. Would love to see one on like industrial music or dense mixes where it gets super hard to get good kick.
@forestcochran4196

A quick note for those interested in purchasing an SSL strip: If you can get the SSL Native Channel Strip on sale, it's a bit easier to dial in than the Waves or brainworx versions for a couple of reasons: 1) According to the Andrew Zeleno video mentioned by another commenter, the high pass filter is more accurate on the SSL Native than the other companies that I mentioned, 2) there are input AND output meters side by side instead of the vU and dBu meters on this one, which helps you level match if you choose to do so, and 3) it's bigger by default, so it's easier to make smaller changes and to see what you're doing! There's also a spot at the bottom which shows the signal path in a way that makes more sense than this old-school UI with the buttons.

This is great; thanks Sara. I do want to ask: to me the kick/drums seem louder than the other instruments like the sax that is (in my headphones) sitting behind the drums. Not sure if that is what is being aimed at or if the drums (kick?) is/are suppose to 'sit' behind or in front of the sax? To enhance these instruments. But that seems to be the sound to me.... l can't wait for your snare/s video!

Rarely, tbh. Only if I can't fix it with EQ or a multiband comp will I go to that option. It's depends on the tracks given as well. If there are sub synths, then I am more likely to go that route.

Ah! Kick drum EQ is the one area I still sort of struggle the most. With heavy music in particular it's been a wild ride learning how to hear when there is too much going on in the low mids and also where I want it in relation to the bass. It can get tricky when the kick drum is playing fast.
@SaraCarterSimplyMixing
@SaraCarterSimplyMixing Жыл бұрын
Yeah, fast kick playing is a challenge, I might be wrong but I think a deeply scooped out sound would work there, like a 700-750Hz cut? Metal's not my thing!
@rome8180
@rome8180 Жыл бұрын
@@SaraCarterSimplyMixing In metal, the kick drum often doesn't have as much low end. Instead, it has an extreme amount of click and attack. In my experience, an aggressive mid scoop followed by boosts at 2.5K and 8K do the trick.
@hauntedhotdog
@hauntedhotdog Жыл бұрын
@@SaraCarterSimplyMixing yeah that sounds about right :)
@kelainefes
@kelainefes 11 ай бұрын
@@rome8180 Yep, and the scoop will easily reach down to 400Hz sometimes even 250Hz. The gate can be used creatively to increase attack and sometimes to shorten the tail, and the low end is controlled to leave some space for the fundamentals of the bass guitar. Dynamic boosts in the top end (usually with a transient designer these days) to further increase punchiness as the compressor cannot be expected to do enough without chocking 16th notes. Then saturation or soft clipping to increase perceived loudness without raising peak levels. And then ofcourse you blend in a sample with similar processing.

Hi Sara, thanks for the awesome content! What puzzles me that every kick drum mix tutorial from almost anyone starts with a dark, wooly sound. My problem is that I have at a starting position a very dense sound with too much attack and a strong basketball sound even with muffling the drum to a fair amount. It's a 24" bass drum with a 5" offset hole. I have a D112 inside the hole, an SM91 inside and a Warm Audio 47jr on the resonant side. Do I drive the mics too hot maybe?

I noticed you didn't drive the input gain into the channel to get some saturation. Do you usually do that? I like giving it 6 db.

I usually do but I didn't want to go there in this video. I wanted the EQ moves to be clean.

I got the SSL 9000j strip (brainworx) for a hefty discount the other day and it immediately became my go-to channel strip for individual drum channels. Being a hiphop producer, the way it processes kicks, snares and hats sounds absolutely wonderful. It adds punch and overall impact as well as subtle saturation and even a great stereo width/depth (depending on the source of course).

I really like the Lindell channel strips, because they give you three distinct flavors, and you can pick which one fits the song best. The 50 (API) is really forward and punchy, where the mid-range really comes right out of the speakers; the 80 (Neve) is more open and sparkly, with a lot of detail in the high and low ends; whereas the 69 (Helios) has a darker, grainier character, which adds a certain vibe without it sounding lo-fi.

Hearing more examples with the explanations would helpful. For example, when channel strips were introduced and various freqs were mentioned and their performance with different plugins - let us hear what you're talking about. It got better but by that time I lost interest. Maybe, just do the job of fixing the kick and explain what, how, and why as you go.
