My ex boyfriend had a north korean mother. She ended up moving to china, the united states, and ultimately canada where she met my ex's father. She eventually ended her own life. I never got a chance to speak with her much, but I wish I had. I know she had tremendous guilt for the family she left behind, and that she struggled to make friendships or even basic connections. I wish I had a chance to ask her the hard questions, to check in on her, to help her feel less alone. Thank you for this small insight into what she experienced.

In the middle of the 60s, one of my high school classmates tried to escape to Austria during the summer holidays. He knew that he had an extremely low chance of getting through the Hungarian/Austrian border or even getting close to it (young people's ID was checked several times on public transport on the way to the border area), so he decided to go through Yugoslavia. It was relatively easy for him to cross the Hungarian/Yugoslav border, but was caught by the Yugoslav border guards near the Yugoslav/Austria border. They beat him up so badly that he required hospitalisation for several weeks. After that, they handed him over to the Hungarian police. The police were so shocked at how bad he looked that they refused to charge him in case the court case would cause international embarrassment. So he was allowed to return to school. Of course, he was not allowed to travel outside Hungary, not even to other communist countries, until the late 80s. He died recently.

Ive heard that eacapees from North Korea actually prefer to live in the US versus South Korea, pointing out that the wider US population can't tell they're North Korean and thus doesbt particularly mistreat them. I'm first generation American citizen born here after my parents escaped from one of the Iron Curtain countries, Bulgaria, in 1967. The lockdown of people was just as harsh. North Korea makes Bulgaria 1967 look like a minimum security prison. Parents were approached several times while in America about doing a book and they refused because they feared repercussions on their families in Bulgaria. If North Korean defectors get book or movie deals...I have no doubt that NK would put a hit out for said defector. Kim had his own brother killed abroad.

All the east bloc countries were like that. Stalin and team had communist leader installed in those countries. Twice, the people of two countries started an uprising, and twice the Soviets came in with tanks and troops to quell the populations.....like China did with Tianemen Square. When the Soviet Union collapsed all the east bloc countries followed suit in 1990. In the case of Romania, the dictator and his wife were quickly captured, tried in like an hour, and taken out back and shot.

Books have been written by defectors, though recently, one of them was found to have a lot of inconsistencies and lies about her story. I think her name is Kiyomi? Forgive me, that name may be incorrect, but she has a KZbin channel as well, and I've seen a few lf her videos. The discussions in her comment sections tipped me off that some of her stories made no sense (like the cultural rules for dating, her saying she had a boyfriend at some point, but supposedly she left the country when she was only about six...which, any "playground crush" at that age isn't worthy of being called a boyfriend or girlfriend, lol) and other things people who've watched her longer have spotted.

Well, that's probably one of the most depressing 'Simon' episodes I've ever watched. I actually think it's worse than Pedro Lopez. The thought of those women thinking they'll escape to a life better than the one they left, only to be sold as slaves, sex or otherwise, is just horrific. And when those who do escape find out they are just dropped into 'modern' life and effectively abandon, I just can't imagine it.

The defectors I know that actually escaped of their own accord, not just with a parent, are seriously strong and driven people. If you think they don’t get much help in South Korea, they get even less in the US where they don’t even speak the language. The slack is often taken up by churches, and that doesn’t always go well as predators use the church as cover for their abuse. Most don’t go to Korea Town in LA either, they go all over as there are Korean communities, and Korean churches in most major cities. The three NK women I know best are a qualified professional golf instructor, an online nutrition business owner and a brick and mortar beauty business owner. Their drive to succeed, given even a hint of opportunity, is a lesson to us all.

But I guess that is one of the reasons why I'm not a totalitarian monster. And I can't imagine escaping that nightmare only to end up basically isolated with PTSD because the SK government likes the propaganda victory but doesn't want to support former DPRK citizens. On the subject of the new channel, hope it works out like Warographics or Into the Shadows, rather than xplrd (RIP)! Love watching you grow Simon and team(s). Please keep on with what you do.

Yes life for a North Korean defector that defects to South Korea can be difficult. It really isn't their best choice for defection First the dialect is different (most Konglish is foreign to them) and their own dialect can make them stand out. Second most South Koreans start their education at childhood, so it is extremely difficult to get a good education in South Korea if you are not born and raised there. Third they have a huge learning curve to overcome - adapting to a highly competitive society, learning the ins and outs of a job market foreign to them, learning many customs and norms that are foreign to them, etc. Fourth North Koreans can face discrimination from South Koreans, not something typically talked about. Lastly if a North Korean makes the mistake of defecting to South Korea they are fresh out of options when it comes to going anywhere else. South Korea automatically accepts all North Korean defectors so once in South Korea they lose the ability to use their refugee status anywhere else. A North Korean that knows better will try to defect to some other country (i.e. United States, Canada, Australia or somewhere in Europe). A rich, developed immigrant nation is generally better for them than South Korea, despite some added challenges.
@zionbaptiste1292

But what's the difference with the US, Canada, Europe etc? Isn't South Korea just as developed as them? Plus, at least SK speaks Korean, even though it is a different dialect isn't it still Korean? Much better than having to learn a completely new language like English, French etc. I'm genuinely curious.

@@zionbaptiste1292 South Korea is an extremely competitive society. Education / career starts at childhood. Typical day for a Korean child is go to school and at the end of the school day go to cramming school. The child than rinses and repeat. Like the U.S. South Korea has a standardized test except their test is even more important, a child's future hinges on it. Everybody is competing for that top 1% spot. I know a Korean friend that was in the top 4% and that wasn't good enough he told me. The competitive nature never stops. South Koreans work some of the longest hours in the world and have some of the highest suicide rates and highest rates of depression. They also have the lowest birth rate in the world. Imagine being thrown into this system as an adult. Crazy hard to succeed. North Koreans are coming from a very different society. It is like night and day for them. They are better off in a European country where things are more relaxed and laid back. Also they will get more help in a socialized European country. Yes they will have to learn a new language, but they will have a better chance at a good job and a good life. I wouldn't recommend the U.S. or Canada, but I think defecting to a Scandinavian country would be better for them. Me and my Korean wife agreed that if we had a child he would not get a South Korean education (we want our child to have a childhood).

@@zionbaptiste1292 Another factor is immigration. South Korea doesn’t have many immigrants and society isn’t really built to handle it. The other countries have a lot of immigration. So tolerance of foreign customs, schools to help people learn and communities to engage with are much more prevalent. They have a lot of built in structures for handling new people that non-immigrant nations do not have. Additionally in these other countries there are immigrant Korean communities. It might sound weird but a South Korean and a North Korea who immigrate to the US have a lot more in common than a North Korean living in South Korea and the Koreans there. It’s easier to establish a community.

I forget which channel he explained it on (LOL) but he's said he doesn't like advertising his other channels since it feels inorganic, kinda? Like oh, this new channel just has followers because he plugged it on his old channel. I think he also said it's the same reason he has so many separate channels instead of one giant one with playlists - these topics have different audiences (altho there is overlap) so he'd prefer them to stay in their own niches!

I left a rough upbringing in a fundamentalist Christian denomination where I was supposed to live for God, a husband, and children to a marriage were I spent the vast majority of my time living for him and trying to keeping myself alive in spite of him. At 29 I managed to make it out alive. Freedom really is terrifying. It's hard having so many choices, having nothing ordained for you. 11 years on I still haven't quite got the hang of it, but I'm learning. I'm healing finally. I wouldn't voluntarily go back to that, but I understand why many do. It doesn't feel restrictive; it feels supportive. Out here, it feels lonely and terrifying. Like falling without a parachute. It's easier now, but yeah. The culture shock, anxiety, depression, and PTSD are a real bitch.

Can KZbin add a button that skips the first 10% of every video? I don't need an ad, then a preview, then another ad, to the preface of the video in which the title gives me all the information I need to be interested.

@@Dominicn123 You really are quite the spam machine! I'm going through the Comments and I keep seeing your copy pasted message all over. Write it once as a normal Comment, and that's it. You're borderline harrassing people, many who are huge fans of Simon (so they won't welcome your message anyways), by replying to their Comments with yours, that almost always has absolutely nothing to do with the original Comment... I'm not defending Simon. Not at all. I'm just trying to talk good sense.
