I don't understand why she felt more confident about skiing there if she found a failure could propagate. Anybody able to explain this?

from what i could surmise, she took twenty something taps to fail the snow layer. that means to her that it is a very strong snow pack that can take a hard impact, but a hard enough impact and it will probably slide. so knowing that the snow is strong, but with enough force put on it, can avalanche, it means you want to just ride the terrain and not go for cliff drops or thing that would stress the snowpack heavy enough to avy.

@@mrsir1872 Yes; it indicates that at low angles there is sufficient stability (I.e. gravity isn’t going to pull the slab downhill when it’s impacted by the skier). The experience issue is very important at higher angles (35-38 degrees), because if you don’t know the slope, even a decent snowpack might avalanche. So you are more conservative on an unknown pitch of any given steepness.

Knowing absolutely nothing about snow hazard analysis. I walk away from this video with even more questions than I came with, haha.

Skiing and propogating, does life get any better ;)

Hey OR, you might want to take this down… it kinda gives the impression you can dig a pit and drop in to whatever. May be better to have a disclaimer or steer folks towards reading the bulletin from their local forecast center as a first step!
