The way to get even lighting is to take the measurement then multiply by .25 example : 10 feet or 120 inch x .25 = 2.5 ft/ 30 inch

So the lights will appear spaced evenly on the ceiling which looks good, but what about spacing them so the light is more evenly dispersed? With overlap of the light spread from the two lights, the center of the room will be brighter than the ends. How would one figure out how far to spread them out to even that out a bit more?

If you care more about the light being generated than the way the fixtures look then you can just draw a diagonal line through the room from cornor to cornor and devide that line by 3rds , which will give you the most possible light that 2 lights can generate in total. If you only care about generating EVEN light throughout the space without regard to how much light total you are creating then it highly depends on the brightness of lights you are using, dimmer lights get placed slightly closer together and brighter lights get placed farther apart

I'd always have half gaps nearest the wall so I'd divide by 4 for 2 lights 1 light 1 1 light 1
