I bought the same bike tow leash two years ago. Love it! Very safe and our GSP took to it right away with no issues.

Thank you for mentioning the harness! I was looking at this as a possible bike-joring alternative to still get to ride with my dog. I am really surprised to see that collars are what is normally used. I guess my question is, does it feel like your dog is pulling you? I have a harness for ski/bike-joring and thought of using it so that my pup can really pull. I just can't tell if it's quite designed for it
@JenniferWasylenko
@JenniferWasylenko 2 жыл бұрын
I agree that collars should NOT be used! I have two harnesses. Yes, Levi pulls when using the harness on the side of the bike but he is always pulling forward. He pulls when he has a lot of energy and I let him. The attachment is on the side of the harness. I control the speed of pulling with my brakes. He doesn't pull the whole ride. I also have a canicross/bikejoring harness from Non-Stop Dogwear. LOVE it! it attaches at the back end of Levi and is meant for pulling. I would not use that harness on the side of the bike because he would be able to get ahead and in front of the bike and that would be hazardous. I hope this helps?! I do use a collar and little leash just for a little extra 'attention' control when needed (squirrels, cats, etc) but he is so well-trained that it has just been a nice secondary feature in case I want to detach him from the bike and still have complete control (house to bike for example)

Oh thank you for watching it! Glad to hear you got a BTL! My harness is from PetSmart. Top Paw® Reflective Comfort Ergonomic Dog Harness. I’ve had it for 16 years and they still sell it. I love it because of the side D-ring. It’s very comfortable for running.

Great Idea. I had a spinal cord injury and I can bike further in an hour then I can walk, so I try to get the most out of my limited "up time" Well I want a puppy since I had a double bypass 2 weeks ago to keep me company and train up so that I can take him biking with me for us to both get our daily exercise, and just enjoy time together. I prefer offroad bike paths to avoid cars, and being disabled I tend to do them more during the week when people are at work so my slower pace doesn't get in anyones way.

Hey Deryk! that's great that you can bike for exercise! What kind of puppy are you thinking of getting? Remember that you need to wait until he/she is about a year old before starting to 'run' them. Their bones and joints need to fully develop first. And then when you do start, start very short (one block)...walk a block (bike beside you), run a block and so on for only about 15min. You can add about 15min each week and start with about twice a week for the first month then 3-4 times...much like a beginner runner ☺️

@@JenniferWasylenko I am thinking a Norwegian Elkhound. Spoke with a few owners that started taking their dogs jogging with them to help burn up some of the dog's extra juice. I would love a siberian husky but I could see them possibly needing a little more then I might be able to give, and the Elkhounds also really like laying on the couch watching tv with their owner at the end of the day rather then another 20 miles in the woods lol.

I just saw this and it looks very interesting. I bought a bike to be able to do this with my dog and then my daughter tried it with hers just holding onto a leash and she pulled her down and she really hurt her self. Is it just because it’s mounted lower that the dog is not able to pull the bike over or can they actually do that or not. I can’t afford to be pulled over and break a hip or some thing. I have a 92 pound Rhodesian ridge back and he just wants to chase everything he sees. I would really love it if this could work for us.

Hello! If you are very confident on a bike you should be fine. Keep in mind, though, that sometimes, you'll want to speed up to keep your dog moving forward if the animal you are avoiding is on either side of you and if it is in front you will want to use the brakes so that your dog has to really work hard and maybe the animal will have passed by by the time you get up there. With my previous GSP I only held the leash in my hand. I didn’t know about bike attachments. He was 90lb and very strong and ‘reactive’ towards some other dogs, rollerbladers, etc. It was pretty hairy scary! My current GSP is only 65-70lb. When he has pulled away from the bike I feel hardly anything because the attachment is low. I would never get one that attaches under the seat. It’s very comforting to know that he can’t get in front of the bike and cross over as well. I hope this helps you decide. I love mine and wish I had it for my last GSP.

How do you train your dog to tell you that they need to go toilet on the bike? My pup pulled me off my bike yesterday because she was pooing, and gave me no indication that she needed to go
@JenniferWasylenko
@JenniferWasylenko 2 жыл бұрын
Great question! I recommend getting to know the potty habits of your dog. I use the bike when I know he’s already recently had a poop. Or I’ll walk him first and then bike him. I never use the bike right after he’s eaten because I want to avoid stomach bloat, which can be fatal. Feed, wait 15-20min, walk (hopefully a poop happens) then bike. Or if I’ve just come home and I know he hasn’t eaten, I’ll bike him. I do regularly stop during the ride to allow him to pee. He has his favourite pee stops. Exercise induces urination. I hope this helps?!

@@Rin-co5hi Lol. I can’t tell u what I was thinking 6 months ago either. But she has the head halter on with the bike leash to keep the dog from trying to bolt after a squirrel and possibly pull the bike down since he is still also hooked to the bike. If he pulls his head she can correct him before he pulls her down.

Whatkindofharnessareyou using?Is that better than a collar for attaching? TY.

Hello! The harness is nothing special. It is made by Top Paw and it has cushion. There are also D rings for attaching to the Bike Tow Leash. A harness is always better than just a collar for the bike. If using just a collar you risk crushing your dog’s esophagus.
