This week I take you to the woods to enjoy some outdoor time. We prepare a simple time saving lunch and discuss ways for you to get more time doing what you love in the outdoors!
Kephart wrote in his book "To be free, unbeholden, irresponsible for the nonce! Free to come and go at one's own sweet will, to tarry where he lists, to do this, or do that, or do nothing as the humor veers, and for the hours 'It shall be what o'clock I say it is!'

❤Keep on hitting them woods! This has been an enjoyable reminder of days gone by. When we would get off of school early, or work ,graɓ our packs, fill our canteens and head out. Cook something from the 'frig or a can of Campbell's. Grab a pot from the creek ,get the fire going ,and start the coffee or tea, eat as if it was the best ever! Grab a guick snooze or explore some then back home in time for dinner. Those were kinder days! Keep your pack ready and take every possible chance! Praying for you and your loved ones.... Rick

The older I get the more I see the old school ways and equipment coming back into style. We couldn’t wait to get rid of the old itchy wool, until suddenly folks realized it had some qualities the new wonder materials just couldn’t match. And even the old knife patterns are being “rediscovered” by a new generation.

22 grew up with my grandpa getting me out in nature hunting and fishing. My belt knife of the Ka-Bar BK62 kephart knife which is a quality knife, I carry a case stockman and there always razor sharp if I can help it. I am looking at the tradition ways of doing things and mixing them with modern to get a good mix of doin it the tried and true way and adapting it with modern technology. But your right the old school way is coming back.

THANK YOU for posting a video that resonates with us in many ways. I LOVE rice pudding...but I have a traditional New England recipe that takes a lot of low-temperature cooking and a LOT of milk and very little rice. The dish is like a rich custard. Add dried currants or raisins as you wish. I cannot leave home overnight because of my wife's health issues. I COULD buy a little land and go out for the days when we have caregivers in to keep her company and to do the housekeeping and whatever. I never have thought of this option prior to your video!

Ya had me until you mixed your potatoes with your rice pudding. Weird food combo Lol! But hey, with camp food, anything goes. I love your thinking, carve out your time. I pack my rucksack with my book stove and small pots/mugs to have some hot tea and coffee during an early morning dog walk in our local big park with my friend. So lovely in the early morning light, birds chirping and the peace. Worth every moment. Thanks for sharing.

Past few years if not doing an overnight trip, I’d get out and go for the morning and head home around lunch time. I usually would checkout different areas for plants, punk wood, game, and for good out of the way camp spots and water sources, and then make a map and notes. And I would always bring a simple hammock and a good book. And make either coffee or tea. Or fish. Me time. We have an open fire ban in early spring in the mountains of Virginia, which means using cat can stove with alcohol until the ban is lifted at the end of April. But later on I use an idea I got from Swede Woods on KZbin using a large metal vegetable steamer to put my fire on. Then when the sticks turn into coals i gather the base together to set the cup on top of it. Back in the 60s & 70s, we dug a trench for a latrine and a key hole fire for individual and patrol cooking. So the fire could easily be maintained and when needed coals could be shoveled out into the shallow trench for cooking. Green sticks, rocks, 3 or 4 big nails or metal spikes made a good pot stand. Our two fire buckets became our wash station. We would wipe out our pans or pots etc before washing our stuff in hot soapy water. Then shaking it off a bit and then rinsing it in warm water with bleach in the second bucket. And we would use a log in camp for a bench, and lash a table between two trees or between a tripod and tree. Tripod seats were also popular. Once I became an Assistant Senior and then Senior patrol leader I either cowboy camped by the fire at night or under the patrol tarp, or in a WW2 jungle hammock. And switched to an army down sleeping bag with a treated water resistant cotton cover. Spent many a night drifting off looking up at the stars and the flames flickering. I used a miners tent in the winter. Our canvas tents in the 60s didn’t have floors. We used whatever we could find like a shower curtain or old piece of canvas. Sewn in tent floors became popular in the 1970s. I eventually became a Jasm and Assistant Scoutmaster. And the boys cooked over the fire and the men over white gas stoves. When I became a Scoutmaster in the 1990s nobody cooked over fire. So needless to say I put the boys toten chip award to good use with learning different fire making methods and types of fire lays, and pioneering projects. And an emphasis on real cooking with a fire, with both their cook kit, patrol kit, and Dutch ovens. I used to go on trips with one other adult and take as many as 45 boys out into the woods. I had good boy leaders back then. Each patrol voted who they wanted as leaders for the year. I or another Scoutmaster would train the patrol leaders. Then the trained or experienced patrol leader would teach his assistant. And they would then switch roles after 6 months. Scouting rule was shown one, teach one. Women Scoutmasters were not encouraged. Because both women and fathers would always try to intervene to help the kids out, instead of them learning by failing and having their boy leadership help them instead. Scouting was a boy led program to build leadership. Don’t know what it is now. Good memories thanks for the videos.

It varies by troop like I'm sure it did in the 90's. I had a great adult leadership team when I was a Scout in the 90's that encouraged traditional Scouting but I saw many troops that did not. More and more, traditional Scouting seems to be pushed to the wayside by adults in favor of a more sport coaching atmosphere where the youth really have little role in the overall running of the program.

First time viewer and now subscriber. Enjoyed the old camping/backpacking gear. I no longer get to backpack. I have to use a CPAP machine. While there are portable options, they are cost prohibitive. Where did yo purchase the period clothing, and other period equipment?

I understand brother. My clothing is mostly from What Price Glory. I use WWI cavalry breeches, and pre WWII US mustard wool shirt or the WWII twill shirt. Some is original gear and pieces I have collected from Ebay or other places. I used old Scout catalogues as my buying guide and grew from there.

Hey I love your videos and classic camping. Question, why would someone choose to wear gaiters as opposed to tall boots? Thanks again for the great material!

Horace Kephart actually argued against tall boots due to how long it takes to lace and unlace and when they got waterlogged there was weight and drying time to consider

Did I miss when you told us all about Kephart and his secrets? It seems to me you are just a click-bait person. Do you know who Kephart was?
@honorableoutfitters
@honorableoutfitters Жыл бұрын
Kephart wrote in his book "To be free, unbeholden, irresponsible for the nonce! Free to come and go at one's own sweet will, to tarry where he lists, to do this, or do that, or do nothing as the humor veers, and for the hours 'It shall be what o'clock I say it is!' I am pretty confident in my grasp of what Kephart wrote in the beginning to end and have researched his articles quite a bit. I'm not claiming to be an expert by any means but since he wrote those words at the beginning of his book I would say making and spending time outdoors to break away from society was his "why" and his methods were his "how". I did not explicitly say this in this video, perhaps I should have and thanks to your feedback I have included it in the description for context. Thank you bringing it to my attention.
