How To Export MP4 (H264+AAC) From VirtualDub

I tried to keep the video short, pause the video if you have problems following some steps.
This process might work on 32-bit VirtualDub as well (haven't tested), but since all plugins required for this have 64-bit versions, I rather use those since x264 encoding can be rather memory intensive. If you choose to try using 32-bit VirtualDub, you might have to use 32-bit plugins (x264.exe included in external_encoders.zip is 64-bit).

The estimator will display wrong when using external encoders, you can safely ignore that. It will only display correctly if using a built-in encoder

This happend after i tried to export it :/ CLI: The multiplexing process failed with error code 1 (00000001). Check the log for possible error messages.

Found the error. If you export without audio, then it tries to locate a blank audio file called blank.aac What you need to do is go back to the VirtualDub settings -> External Encoders and edit the MP4 x264 one, and change the file location for that file (-add "C:\VirtualDub\external_encoders\blank.aac"). I only had to change the drive letter (C -> E) to fix it as I have installed VirtualDub on that drive. Hope that helps!

Are you trying to open mp4 files in vdub? If so, I have no idea what plug-ins you need for that, it doesn't support it by default.

@@ImAciz after hours of trying different options, I found out that Vdub isn't going to suit my need for converting/compressing my shadowplay footage. I'm just going to import it directly into Sony Vegas. This way the file looses very little quality. I'll do my sound editing in Audacity. Thanks for your reply.

Is there a version requirement in Virtualdub for this to work? I have VirtualDub 1.8 and I don't see "External Encoders" under Options....

I haven't tried with 1.8, I'm using 1.10.4 myself. Might be that you just need to update yours, there's a 5 year gap between the versions, could very well be that 1.8 doesn't support external encoders yet, or there simply isn't a menu option for it.

Log says opening blank aac failed, MUX error importing blank acc, requested URL is not valid or cannot be found. Something corrupted or missing on my Windows7? I could use bigger HDD to edit and save AVI but would prefer not to. Any further suggestions appreciated, cheers.

The preset uses --crf 15, which targets a certain quality, which basically means "use whatever bitrate to maintain this quality". Is the resulted file actually poor quality?

Open up the mp4_x264_aac.vdprof file and adjust the --crf parameter of the "V: x264" profile. CRF is imo the best way to set a certain quality target for the video, but you can also swap it for something else if you'd like. www.chaneru.com/Roku/HLS/X264_Settings.htm#Ratecontrol
