How to Extend Sketch Geometry in Fusion 360

How to Use the Extend Command in Fusion 360 // The Extend command can be activated from the sketch dropdown list... or from the right-click sketch menu.
The Extend tool will expand your sketch geometry to the nearest intersecting point of sketch geometry. In many common workflows, you’ll find that the Extend command works well in conjunction with the trim tool. I’ll put a link to the trim tool video down below in this video’s description.

Yes. The number of times I have deleted a line and then tried to reconnect to the last point it was attached has been time-consuming along with hit and miss. In some cases, as you mentioned the line can sometimes be multiple segments due to adding more than one line to the reconnection. This is another great tool to speed the process along. looks like a really useful quick way to model, I would suggest adding a custom shortcut such as shift+T and keep trim as T so that we can quickly swutch between them.

How do you extend the work space or sheet size in fusion 360 to cover a 4x8 work table?

Great video Kevin!, one thing i was wondering is what happens when extend is used on a compound curve like a path? Will it just complete the circle that the closest section of curve can create?

Hi Matthew - great question! Generally, with a compound curve that's made with ars/circles, the extend command will continue the path of one of the arcs (depending on where you select with your mouse). With complex curvature created with splines, the extend command will typically just expand to the nearest intersecting point as a straight line. However, the nice thing about spline extensions is that the end point of the straight line ends up having a spline handle that can be manipulated (just like the rest of the spline). When I hover over a line with extend, no line gets selected or bolded. It seems once you click finish sketch it is done.

Hi, Philip. Thanks for watching! Great question - If you unintentionally overconstrain your sketch you should receive a warning message from F360 stating "adding the constraint/dimension will over-constrain the sketch." Generally, it won't actually let you place the dimension or constraint and it will tell you that it's "driven" by another dimension/constrain. However, sometimes it will let you... in which case, you'll find out when you go to update a dimension or constrain and the sketch does not update accordingly. I always recommend the following best practices when it comes to sketches: -Keep your sketches as simple as possible. When in doubt, create another sketch. -Always constrain your sketches before dimensioning -Add the fewest amount of dimensions possible so you can update only a few dimensions to drive the rest of the sketch I hope this helps!
