Make sure to uncheck the repeat/loop thingy in the player(otherwise it loops the convertation process too), change end file name(even if it's a different format, it will rewrite it nevertheless) and select "add -converted" if you chose more than one file to convert.

And what if it has multiple audio? I saved one in that way but VLC converted into one. All of the audio tracks are playing in the coverted file.

It works but not as smoothly anymore, did exactly the same as shown in this video (I was doing this already but searched to see if I could see if I was doing something wrong) however after it converts VLC keeps coming up saying "Overwrite or keep file" and no matter how many times I click it off or select keep it pops up again meaning I have to do the Ctrl, alt & del to get task manager up and end task (even when I select the MP3 to save in a different folder) so it's a bit of a pain however thanks for the video as it shows it's clearly a VLC issue so thank you :)

perhaps vlc has changed but I did this on my mac after downloading VLC from the link you listed. The media button wasn't there and the convert/save was now convert/stream. I followed your instructions from there and it just converted my audio into a text file. So I am unable to make it work by following your steps. Do you know if i'm doing anything wrong?

The menus look different now than you describe, but I found Convert/Stream in the file menu. I selected Audio - MP3, named a new file on my desktop for the destination, dropped my little video in (it's a .MOV file from camera with a bird song that I want), and clicked the blue Save button. Twice now I have done this, and I see the bar go by as you describe in your video, but on my desktop the destination file is a TextEdit file filled with gibberish. Please help!

Susan Kielb I had to take the wav file and transfer it into Audacity, which is free. Once there, I converted it’s sample rate as well as into an mp3. Hope that helps for future use. :)

this is awesome. but i keep getting a box that says "the output file already exists, if recording continues, the file with overridden and its content will be lost" with the options OVERWRITE or KEEP EXISTING FILE. overwrite just rips it again and keep existing file just makes the box pop back up instantly, either way i'm just looping back to that box. sometimes it rips just a portion of the file, but i cant get a full clean rip. any suggestions?

My VLC looks different-and the command is Convert/Stream - I can add the file, select profile e.g. Flac and then click save but all that happens is this saves a text file and no apparent audio extraction takes place from my large .mp4 file . Any ideas ? / VLC Version 3.0.4 Vetinari (Intel 64bit)

Hi, I used the same settings. After hitting the wrench, there is also a video tab, I kept the codec the same as selected first, h. 264 mp4 + mp3 (mp4) and in audio tab I unselected the audio. The video takes it time to convert the entire 1.5 hours movie but when I play the converted video, the video length shows 45 mins :( Any idea why this happens? All other steps are the same as yours.

Doesn't work for me. Even though I am changing the name of the file and saving it to a different location, no matter what I do, I get a VLC message saying "The outputfile already exists. If recording continues, the file will be overridden and its content will be lost." And then there are two buttons--Overwrite and Keep existing file. No matter which I press, the message just comes right back and the only way I can start over is my using "end task" in the Task Magager to close VLC. I know I'm doing it right. It's not that difficult. Any ideas?

I am having an issue that when I follow these instructions, I get an extension of mp4 and I don't seem to be able to delete the mp4. I did try using the audio -flac option instead of audio -mp3 but other than that, it's the same. Why is it defaulting to mp4?

Okay I am halfway in but I am already reaching my first conundrum. I am trying to get music to an Ipod Classic. The old shit, 5.5 gen to be exact. I need these video files on my computer to get the music I want. Itunes DOES NOT have the entire album I am looking for. I am plagued with the desire to listen to my music :(... I will stop now. KZbin to mp3 works some of the time, but I run into stupid copyright and other issues like the length of the video. I need a reliable way to transfer these youtube videos, all of which are simply audio with the album cover; in my file explorer, to finally add to itunes, in which I can finally get the music I want on my Ipod. I listen to the same music everyday. Everyday. You may start to understand why I just need one device for my music, so I can break traffic laws with my Ipod...

That's not extracting the audio from the file. That's reencoding the audio to your preferred format. The problem with this is that the audio track is again reencoded. The audio is already in a playable format inside the video container file. There is no need to convert it. These tutorials that are titled with anything to do with extraction should all be titled with something referencing conversion. You just need to separate the video and audio from the container file (mp4,mkv,etc). It doesn't need to be converted. Doing so is reencoding a lossy reencode a second time over. Not what you want to do if you want to retain the same quality that you're starting with. Unfortunately, a lot of the consumer targeted software out there doesn't give you the option to simply EXTRACT the raw audio from a video file. This seems to be a more common option in video editing software though. Don't ask me which software. I'm not writing a tutorial here. Just making a point about actually extracting audio from a video file while not reencoding it and losing any of the original quality.

Just recorded a gaming video where there was a slight mismatch between my vocals and the game audio (unfortunately didn't record my vocals in a separate audio interface) and I think some slight compression in my main DAW will help.
