How to fabricate stringers (rise & run) (How to build steps)

In this video we illustrate how to find the total rise and divide it into individual risers, so that we can fabricate custom stringers out of pressure treated 2x12 lumber.
Steps usually have a minimum rise of 4" & maximum rise of 7 3/4" or 8" depending on your local building code. All steps must be the "exact" same rise (1/8" variance is tolerable, but not desirable).

I think you messed up your top tread. You subtracted off the back for dbl thickness but one of your 2xs were going on the front. You needed to add 1.5 to your top tread and move your top riser back 1.5.

You have to take 3 1/8th off of the top step because 1 9/16th goes on back and 1 9/16th goes on the front. This is the proper way.

You only needed to subtract for of sgl 2x on the back. Not dbl 2x. Your front is already accounted for.

​​@@deckbydesignl.l.c5091 if you're intention is to have a video meant for someone to learn stairs, & not just a "hey here's some stairs real quick". My advice is script it. Step by step. Maybe not every word of the video but every measurement & mark you're gonna make & why. If you're stopping to consider things & re checking, you know what's happening in your head but the guy who's never laid out stairs will get lost. I'd also show them being attached so people can see how cutting the tread & riser thickness off gets built back up. I don't think you did anything that bad, it's just hard to remember to be as clear & specific as possible because we always know what we mean.

Agree with your assessment. Still appreciate the initiative of the presenter. He knows the stuff but if he is not detail oriented, it will be difficult for a beginner to follow thru. Thank you.

Um you skipped over a bunch of shit. Like how do you come up with 33 inches run? Like is it to do with width of board you are using? Also im not sure what code you are following to only have 6 inch rises.....pretty shitty video skips over too much details.

I appreciate your feedback. Yes, the individual run is based on the width of the decking plus the necessary gap between decking. If you take the full amount of steps and add them together you will have the total run. Max individual rise for a step is 7 3/4. Minimum rise for a step is 4", but I don't like to to under 5.5". 6 to 7 inches is perfect.

Your DIY er will click off in 20 seconds way tooo much over kill with fractions maybe try and round stuff off or maybe your just not the teaching type... Many are not you know..

When doing Carpentry you measure in fractions down to 1/16. You can't round when building or you'll have a mess. If a do it yourselfer doesn't know that they shouldn't be building anything.
