Meal worms are one of the ways I feed my chickens and ducks. About 8 years ago I made a 25.00 investment into a meal worm starter kit and have had nothing but success with it. I started with around 100 and now have Thousands, 8 large plastic drawers full of beetles and worms. Every few days I carry a bunch out to my birds and as you say, "they go wild for them". I also use kitchen scraps, compost piles and 'regular' feed.

My son and daughter-in-law have about 10 chickens and my grandkids and I love watching them eat treats. When I visit, I try to bring along green scraps. They especially love the leftover roots and stems from micro greens.

My hens follow me about in the morning when I pick off baby caterpillars from the garden plants. It's fun watching them get all aggressive when I throw a giant tomato worm to them. I always grow extra greens in summer & winter for them The larger watermelon & cantaloupe patch is a godsend during the extreme summer heat, feeding them a melon every day helps keep their temp cool. I keep the compost in their yard which makes a richer compost for the garden. I have 3 worm tunnels I feed them from I put down a thick 6" layer of leaves down which gives plenty of bugs & prevents ground from freezing during artic blasts I buy a "Chicken Forage" seed blend I throw down every spring for them to nibble on 1 of the top benefits of free range chickens in my backyard is I know longer have to treat my dogs & cat with expensive flea & tick meds because the flock eats them up. Even w massive pine trees with decades of pine straw in the ground that the ticks love. My neighbor who is father from the pines than I can't even enjoy sitting on their deck without ticks jumping on them. I have pine s 3' from my fence & branches hanging +20" over my fence line. So besides the nutrition & relaxation benefits you get from a flock you also have an insect free yard without using nasty harsh chemicals

Please don't let your chickens eat the horn-worms that eat up your tomato plants (can strip a tomato plant in a day), I'm told that chickens shouldn't eat tomatoes, or the worms that eat the tomato plants.
@user-tn7xo7ky9o
@user-tn7xo7ky9o Жыл бұрын
@@MrRudeDog100 Appreciate your concern, but your wrong. Tomato Hornworms are an excellent source of protein & calcium. Tomatoes are one of the best things you can feed chickens, potassium, antioxidants, B9, C. Hot summer days feeding tomatoes, melons, cucumbers,... produce w high water helps keep them cool. Past few years I increased those crops by 50%. This summer forecasted to b 2-4° warmer, hottest yr on record for US, I'm doubling those crops & in process of building an outdoor aquaponic system hoping I'll get yields while reducing water usage by 90%. Last summer temps hit 100° 1st week in May & continue to rise to 112. Might time temps never dropped below 84. >60 days no rain, my 1500 gal rainwater collection was dry by end of June. Everything I grow is organic,. I make my own dirt, mulch, compost, fertilizers, & nut coir (like coconut fiber). I don't use any insecticides. If I get a massive aphid infestation I'll use dish soap. Companion planting, hens, & me looking crazy w my headlamp on in middle of night picking caterpillars of my plants. So I don't have to worry about any of my animals, or myself, ingesting toxins from the garden or the bugs. Apologies for rambling on about the garden, just want to share a bit on how I grow/ raise food chemical free

Do you have a Facebook, Insta, or KZbin channel where you share more about your garden and chickens? I would be interested in learning more of your processes. 🙂 Sounds like you have a lot of things figured out!
@user-tn7xo7ky9o
@user-tn7xo7ky9o 8 ай бұрын
@khaylem.4846 No, I've thought about it, I keep getting asked to do a you tube channel. My passion is growing edibles for myself & animals and doing it in a way that I don't have to buy products, seed and plants from the store every yr. Also by collecting seeds from your plants to grow the next crop makes them more resistant to your location; insects, weather,... I've been battling extreme temps +2 yrs now. Summers are so hot with severe droughts, if it's not killing my plants it's frying the flowers so I'm not getting any produce. This summer I turned all my large pots into wicking beds which increased my potato crops and kept my tomatoes & pepper plants healthy. I also added an aquaponic system that includes 300 gal fish tank & 4 4x4' garden beds. Fish feed the plants, plants feed the fish & they birth feed me, the chick's & the dogs. I have some ideas on how to improve things for next yr, which they are forecasting will b hotter than this yr... If I can keep the flowers alive I won't have an bees to pollinate. This summer I never saw more than 1 bee in the garden at a time and no butterflies. Then the extreme artic blast r hitting the deep south is killing my winter garden in the high tunnel. Winter 2022 we had a flash freeze, my 330 gal rainwater totes froze solid My chickens have been doing fine in the winter but the summer heat has been too much. They'll stop laying and I lost several even with all the shade, breeze (feels like hair dryer blowing on u) & fresh flowing water they have access to. Actually I'm pretty worried. When someone like me can't grow enough food to feed myself daily let alone preserving for tomorrow that's a problem. I think we r going to have to learn how to grow, what to grow and when to grow. Geothermal greenhouses and homes could very well be our future. Hopefully my ideas/ tweeks for next yr will work & I can get that channel up and running for u ;)

👍 You can feed cooked eggs back to the chickens. Either boiled or scrambled. I like using the scrambled because they are less messy and contain a little oil/butter too. When I had baby chicks they seemed to be satisfied longer eating the scrambled eggs than the feed. They didn't act so ravenously hungry. 🐣

I have 44 hens and roosters and they free range sun up to sun down. Still end up spending least $250.00 a month in grains, layer feed, grit, oyster shells, etc. apple cider vinegar also along with other minerals and vitamins once in a while too. Been using wood products for bedding, but I’m going to change to using construction Sand cause it soaks up moisture better and dries out the chickens waste. Just need a good scooper to pick up chicken poo and let the sand filter thru the scoop. Sand lasts a lot longer then using wood chips. Long run sand saves money too

Some places aren't allowed to let you get food from their bin due to health department rules. Yet other grocery stores that buy from our local farmers have let me bring a bag and go into their 30 gal can in the back room that's designated for vegetable trimmings or not so perfect looking veggies. I'm discrete and walk out with my bag closed so not to draw attention.

As I weed garden beds and cracks in the sidewalk etc., I give it all to my chickens, with only a few exceptions, just as with kitchen scraps. It gets a little trickier in the winter, but in our situation, they get to be out around the garden beds more in the winter, so it's a tradeoff.
