I encountered the same exception as well, I found the solution: When you add SnapshotListner to Documentreference inside the ONEVENT function comes 2 arguments : either there will be exception(error) or documentsnapshot successfully retrieved so check exception if(e != null) as it can cause a crash and put snapshot access code inside ELSE statement. if (e!=null){ Log.d("DocumentSnapshot","Error:"+e.getMessage()); }else { //getting the string using key defined from the document snapshot name.setText(documentSnapshot.getString("fullName")); email.setText(documentSnapshot.getString("email")); } I hope you get it now

For anyone having the same problem. I found a solution: The problem is that with the logout the user loses the permission to have access to the data. Therefore documentSnapshot is null and it throws a null object reference.
