I'm a little late to the party but just wanted to say thanks. I thought the little insects were springtails but wasn't too sure because they weren't jumping, at least not the ones in the soil. I did see some jumping in the saucer under the pot. I wasn't sure what to do about it. A lot of KZbinrs say to leave them but I don't want them so thanks for showing the product you use to get rid of them. 💙

Thanks for your help. I haven't been able to find the food for my fig until now. Love the shower idea too. Just so you are aware though: Springtails won't hurt your plant. They eat bacteria, fungi, lichens, algae, and decaying vegetation, fertilizing the soil in the process. This process release minerals that only help your plant. I keep springtails and isopods because they help my plants.

Hi i have a Mr. Fiddles as well and the some of the same things were happening to my tree. I had it in a window it was too windy for him he dropped two baby leaves so i moved it away but near the window its happy no leaves dropping. NOW!!! the brown spots which you mentioned i think i was overwatering this guy, but in the east coast we had a crazy spring with summer mixture now back to spring so he was thirsty and i think thats where i went wrong. I also bought the meter to read the soil that little inexpensive gadget has helped me soo much. When they said finicky they werent kidding!!! love the video keep us posted with your fiddle fig
@KirstenNaturally
@KirstenNaturally 6 жыл бұрын
Wow you’re right, our FLFs have had such similar issues! I’m so glad you’ve got the leaf-dropping figured out. Now what to do about the overwatering - I might say let the soil just barely read into the “red dry” meter reading. Make sure you move it around in the soil to get an accurate reading. Then give it the shower like I talked about in the video and let it fully drain. Let it hit that “red dry” section on the moisture meter again each time before you water. Try that for the next 2 or more watering cycles and LET ME KNOWWWW! Can’t wait to hear ✨❤️ thanks for commenting, Nad!

Thanks so much for this Nerik! I'm not sure now that they're gone if it was indeed springtails or maybe you're right, I could have ID'd them wrong and they may have been mites. But it they were the springtails, I was worries because it seemed like a lot at the time. If it ever happens again I'll see if I can get an even closer look and try to better identify them :) thanks again for the really nicely put tip, super kind.

Red dots are a ally due to over-watering. It is called edema, and basically that the leaves are trying to take u) all that water and the veins can’t tolerate it so they get those red dots.

Thanks so much! This is the most direct, informative video on common FLF issues I’ve found. So, I bought mine about 6 months ago, and have had ZERO new leaves. I have measured that it has grown about 6-10 inches since owning it, but I still haven’t found anyone else with my issue. I’m thinking I maybe shocked it when I transplanted it out of its nursery pot about 3 months ago (early August), which I thought would be fine in Southern California where we get sun year round, but I still didn’t want to do that too close to winter, because I know they don’t grow much in winter months and need to sort of rest until the following growing season. Any ideas? Admittedly I haven’t fed as consistently as I should with watering, but my justification is that I mixed an organic solid fertilizer into the soil itself, along with worm castings (which I also top dress about once a month). Still nothing though. Otherwise it looks like a very healthy tree (always get complements from visitors). Misting everyday, no spots, no bugs, not over or under watering. Any additional tips if you’ve heard of a shocked plant or a plant with stunted growth would be helpful. Thanks!

@KirstenNaturally

Oooo that sounds like a good idea, especially since the growing season is coming to an end soon, I can def do that. In fact, if you follow me on Instagram, I'll put this in my story - instagram.com/kirsten_naturally Until then I don't wanna leave you hanging: the only reason you wouldn't want to shower your FLF is if you don't have drainage hole at the bottom of your pot...if you've got the drainage holes than you are good to give a quick shower with a light amount of water, and then allow it to drain fully. You don't want to soak the sh*t out of it but you want to make sure that water comes out of the bottom drainage holes to ensure you got a full watering :)

I finally got this plant . I made a humid try around it seemed great ... but s fee leafs has brown spots on the outer part of leaf :( so maybe I need to spray him . I live in Oregon which can be hard for plants as it’s cold here and raining a lot . Some days there is no sun but just cloudy weather . I have him and my succulents and money tree near a west facing window ( not too close ) and no air vents (heater or ac ) I’m actually really scared about summer time and having my ac on all day 😫 So that’s when I’ll probably have a second humidifier. Thanks for all the info . I’ve never let him have a shower since it’s still not warmed up ( 45-55) outside . And I feel like it would be too cold for him .

Hey Carmella - I have lived in Portland with this plant since I got it, so it shouldn’t be a problem to be showering or misting your plant. The plant can take some cold, just doesn’t like to be too dry or in poorly draining soil. Use the links in the description to get the most important things for your plant: the 3-way meter and the nutrients. You’ll need those for the upcoming summer 🌸🥰 Also make sure it’s getting the most indirect sunlight possible, so east-facing indirect sunlight is best 🌞 thanks for watching!

Hi Kirsten my flf tree is dropping leaves off from its longest stems but growing in between. I bought the plant in November last year and this issue started in February. It has lost a lot of leaves. After I watched your video it makes me realize I may have underwatered it initially but after the issue arose I’ve been pretty good with watering. It’s been growing in some areas but the dropping isn’t stopping. The leaves turn yellow before they drop. I want to save these tall stems. Please help me save my tree

Thanks for all the info! My FLF was doing really well until (my own fault for being too proactive) over watered it... Now it's got some brown spots, no losing leaves though (yet) and it has 4-5 new leaves growing so it's tough! I just got one of those moisture meters too and yeah, I had definitely over watered :( it's finally drying out though so hopefully it'll be on the road to recovery

Don't worry, we've all been there - you're either an overwaterer or an underwaterer..I tend to be the underwaterer and that's why I love that little meter so much. Sticking your finger down in the soil just isn't enough to tell in my experience! No stress about your overwatering though, just let it get to "Dry" between numbers 2-3 before you water again. Move the meter around in the soil to get a really good read :) Hope your FLF grows like a magic fkn beanstalk, my friend! Thanks for watching, your time means a lot to me :) Catch me in another plant update video coming this weeeeeek ✌️

@@KirstenNaturally looking forward to the next vid! I think I figured out what happened to my FLF. I gently lifted it out of the pot to check the roots and luckily there's no root rot even the little fine roots are firm so I think it was mild over watering (at the bottom it's around a 9, a 6 in the middle layer). And then looking at the damaged leaves, the bottom two feet and top foot were totally fine while the middle had spotted leaves and a few ones with crispy blotches but mostly on one side... When we bought it it was warm out, and then we hit a heatwave so the windows were open all the time (we had it in front of the big window where it opens). It was totally fine until it cooled off back to normal (50-75F) and we keep the windows open most of the time, so I think there is also some cold damage from the 50 degree breeze at night. I can't believe I didn't even think of that... It makes sense since the damage is pretty much dead center on the window. I moved it over away from the screen so hopefully that and being careful with watering it'll bounce back just fine :)

Hi came across your video and thought you might be able to help . I bought a fiddle leaf fig tree that has small redish brown spots under the leaves , and they started showing up as holes on the top side. Im not sure what to do . Its hard to tell if its over watering or under watering . I also noticed that the new leaf growing at the top has a grayish dry tip . My tree was in a self watering container when i purchased it.

Hi Kirsten, so happy I came across your video, I lost 3 leaves this week and I am So sad I was under watering so I immediately put Fina in the shower! I hope this will stop the leaf dropping 😐. I also noticed her stem is brown is this supposed to be brown or green? I just got Fina 3 weeks ago at Costco and I don’t know how long the plants sat there with out proper moisture. I also ordered the plant food from amazon. Thanks hope you see my post. Zio
@KirstenNaturally
@KirstenNaturally 5 жыл бұрын
You're so sweet, I definitely saw your post 🥰 Your stem color seems fine, mine is brown too :) I am so happy you got Fina in the shower, she must be loving it! Remember, not too heavy on overflowing the soil with the shower, just really focus on those leaves and water the soil moderately :) That way you don't overwater Fina, but she gets that moisture from the shower that she'd be used to in her native tropical environment! Go order that 3way meter I link in the video description - its THE MOST important purchase I've made!! Thanks for the love, Zio! Subscribe if you haven't already and I hope to hear from you in the comments in my future videos 🥰

I've heard fiddle figs don't like to be moved. So does it harm them to move them to the shower for their weekly watering?
@KirstenNaturally
@KirstenNaturally 4 жыл бұрын
Mine has been okay with it, I think it might be because she's super happy in her setup so when I move her back after the watering she's not in a stressful environment, so it's easier to acclimate again? I'm not 100% on this, just a guess. But so far, mine has done fine being moved every so often for a good showering :)

Don't keep your meter in the soil, they brake faster and stops giving you accurate reading. After I use mine, which I have 3 of LoL, I clean it with a little peroxide in a little glass spray bottle container just for plants so that soil doesn't cross contaminate with other plant pots to keep them healthy, spray and pat all my tools dry. Keeps your tools is ship shape! :) I like doing this, hope you find this fun and helpful. I LOVE PLANTS! hehehe

Hi there! I have a FLF and when I bought it from another owner, it only had three leaves, rather large leaves 25cm at its largest and I've had it for almost 2 months now. And im not sure what I'm doing wrong cos it's not growing, Im pretty sure the soil mix is good cos I repotted it with premium potting mix (slow release fertilizer included in the mix), perlite and some cactus mix. Ive placed it in bright indirect light.... It developed some brown spots which looks like rust... And I just bought some organic fungicide spray but haven't used it yet.. I've also checked the root system, it had some dead roots but I chopped it off.. Watering - I water it when it's quite dry using a soil moisture probe.. And yeah! Not sure, it just looks like it's doing nothing but developing some brown spots behind the leaves... No other activities 😂😭😭😭😭😭, I want it to grow

I'm not sure where you live, but during the winter months, they typically go into their dormant phase where little to no growth occurs. I would just give it time and lean towards less watering until the growth picks up

Love your channel! Finally a Fiddle Leaf Fig video that makes sense to me! My one question is I cannot carry my Ferdie to the shower upstairs (there’s no shower downstairs)! If I mist him once a day could I just water him the regular way? And how much water in the soil? Or should I take him outside and use a hose?
@KirstenNaturally
@KirstenNaturally 5 жыл бұрын
Aww what an amazing comment! 😍 You should be good without showering if you're misting everyday, wiping the dust off the leaves, and making sure you're on top of the watering schedule (get that 3way meter in my description and it will SAVE you!) I wouldn't go outside with him, just use (not too cold) water to water him on a schedule that keeps the 3-way meter reading "moist." You can let the meter read a little dry (reading between 2-3) in between waterings to avoid overwatering, but don't let it get to 1 or that's too dry. Hope this helps you and hope to hear from you in other videos my fraaaand! love, Kirsten

I actually have been traveling and left my plant babies with a friend, who's keeping up with the feeding for me. I told her to not stress it, but about every 2-3 waterings or so would be good to feed. She's been sending me update photos with new growth! I think because the nutrients I recommend (link in the description of the vid!) is so low in its N-P-K ratio, that feeding through the winter could be okay 🤷

Amazing video!! Bought my fiddle leaf plant 3 weeks ago and bought the 3-1-2 CNS17 just like you recommended. I do have a couple questions 1. When diluting it on a 32 oz water spray, do I spray it on the leafs or do pour it on the dirt when watering my plant on the shower. 2. How often do i give my plant the nutrients? It’s still a small plant, and I’m scared! Lol Please help! Thank youu
@KirstenNaturally
@KirstenNaturally 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Stephany - Thanks for the comment! I actually wouldn't recommend putting the nutrients in a spray bottle. The spray bottle I talk about in the video is for the leaves (and basically everything else in life haha) is this one: bit.ly/makeyourownspray As far as the nutrients go, I dilute mine in a small watering pail and pour the nutrient water mixture in right after I've done the (LIGHT) shower/watering. I add my nutrients every other feeing or so during growing season and every 3-5 times in the off season. I emphasize light on the showering/watering because you don't want to "swamp out" your FLF and the soil stay too wet...which the 3-way meter (amzn.to/2NXz3KC) will really help you stay on top of. All this should help, but don't hesitate to ask any more questions! Thanks again for the love 💕

Hello Kirstin, this was a great info. The brown spots.... I have a brown spot problem with both way what does that mean?
@KirstenNaturally
@KirstenNaturally 6 жыл бұрын
From the research I've done, it seems like this may be from a combination of a few or more of the following: sporadic watering schedule, taking too long to water and then watering too much on feeding day, allowing the plant to sit in water after feeding, too large of a container (mine is a 3.4 GAL) and last but not least, not misting daily (check this video bit.ly/makeyourownspray for how to make your own misting spray). Let me know if this helps - keep me updated!

Hi My leaf fig has pretty much lost all its leafs.. I water it once a week, has good indirect lighting.. it’s gone from being full of leafs and now has 6 left. Could it be the dryness of the flat? As in the strong heating in the house? Thank youuuu

It's tough to say without me knowing more - the best way to make sure you're on the perfect watering schedule (specific to your FLF) is with the 3-way meter I mention in the video. Ok so I just got my girl and she’s not shiny she’s a lil dull looking ☹️ I did see some shine spray at pikes to help repel dust and dirt should I get some of that? Or is it something she’s lacking to make her look dull? I love your video and Fiona is looking great!🤗 new subbie as well!
@KirstenNaturally
@KirstenNaturally 5 жыл бұрын
I don't use a shine spray, I just make a little spray bottle of water + essential oils (bit.ly/makeyourownspray) and mist her down every other day/daily, depending on the dryness in the air. This helps to keep the leaves from getting too dry and crackly. And then once a week, I take a microfiber cloth (you can use a soft washcloth too) and spray her down, leaf by leaf, and wipe off all the dust. This helps the plant breathe and helps keep the leaves shiny! Hope this helps you out love! And THANK YOU SO MUCH for subscribing, so stoked to have you here 🤗❤️

Im confused. You feed your fiddle the nutrients when it's in the shower? My fiddle is wilted and droopy, but also dont know if its nutrient deficient.
@KirstenNaturally
@KirstenNaturally 5 жыл бұрын
Jay Yudith I can’t really shower mind anymore because it’s gotten too heavy and big to carry around but yes, you’d just shower first (focusing on the leaves since that’s the point of the shower) and then once the leaves are nice and wet then you go and mix your nutes and water and feed. Allow to drain in the tub if you have a draining pot before you bring the plant back to its spot in your house. Alternatively, you can do what I do now that mines too big to shower. I just spray the leaves at least once daily and keep an eye on my 3-way meter I link in the description - that meter will save your life when it comes to how much and how often to water ALL your plants! Hope this all helps!

Some of my leaves grow dramatically different sizes, any idea how I can get it to keep producing huge leaves? Thank you!
@KirstenNaturally
@KirstenNaturally 4 жыл бұрын
I've found the biggest factor for me and getting HUGE leaves is the amount of sunlight. My current place is a corner unit facing NE, so I get a lot more light than my last apartment I lived in when I got my FLF, Fiona (lol.) Since moving into this new place with lots of indirect light all day, the leaves are growing VERY large. So I know this one is kinda out of your control to some extent, if you can get the maximum amount of sunlight on your plant, you should hopefully see some bigger leaves! Another this is -- make sure you are watering on the right schedule for your FLF. Definitely invest that 3-way meter I have linked in the description of the video, it will SAVE you :)

Thanks for the love, reddd! I feed my FLF (Fiona, lol) the nutrients diluted in water AFTER I've done the QUICK showering. thanks for sharing the great research you did! how often do you fertilize? From what I understand, you said you give it the 3-1-2 feeding every week when you water? I've been doing every 3 weeks, and everything I've read says 3-4 weeks, but my new growth is coming out with the red spots and it's quite disappointing....
@KirstenNaturally
@KirstenNaturally 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes you are correct, right now I'm fertilizing with every watering during the grow season and diluting it in water of course (about 1-2T to 32 oz water). I shower the plant first like I talk about in the video, THEN I water with the fertilizer mixture while its still sitting in the shower. I let that sit in the tub to fully drain and then put it back by the window! 3-1-2 is a seriously low NPK ratio and I'm into experimenting so I've been doing this "heavier fertilizing" for weeks with no issues and I've gotten tons of new growth! I still have had a few red spots on 1 or 2 new leaves when they first came out but they went away as they grew out..so I'm thinking we're all good! I'm sorry, I know it can be so frustrating to see the new growth come out with issues. Keep me updated on how things go!

Ahh I'm sorry you have 'em - they suck! I would think its lighting but I have a smaller fiddle leaf right next to my large one and that one seems to be doing just fine. Anything you can tell me or help me with I would greatly appreciate!

Do you have the 3-way meter I mention in the vid? That should help you a tonnnn with knowing what the water situation is deep down in your FLF's soil. I don't water mine until the 3-way meter goes below about 4 on the meter, which varies in time honestly..so its hard to say that watering weekly/every 1.5 weeks is what your figgy needs. Of course, since I'm not there, I can't say for sure, but it definitely sounds like a water/possibly drainage issue. I'm sorry I can't give you more definitive advice, but order that 3 way meter if you haven't already (link in the vid description) and let me know if things get better once you're in a watering routine your FLF likes :)

Thanks so much! One other question: what do you think about cutting off leaves that have spots or just cutting off a partial amount of the tip where the spots are? I have heard differing opinions on whether this is OK or not. It looks like maybe you have cut out partial bits of a few of your leaves. Actually one more question: what kind of soil do you use, and do you put a layer of charcoal, stones, or anything on the bottom to boost the drainage? I currently just have regular miraclegro potting soil with some added perlite. Have a wonderful day!
@KirstenNaturally
@KirstenNaturally 6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't cut the leaves off, you can cut off around the edges but honestly I don't think its worth it from my experience, it just comes back from you cutting too close to the green anyways. I say just let it stay and keep on working on getting that new growth to be happy and healthy :) As far as the soil goes, I actually have a video on repotting if you wanna check that out, I'll link it here for you! bit.ly/FLFrepot 💕 Thanks for the love!
