We will but so many people don't want our knowledge that took us years of trial and error. They want our recipes to the products we sell. That took years upon years of trial and error and money. I consider myself lucky. I learnt from my grandfather who had been making tallow, olive oil, and goat milk soap his whole life. No telling how long that recipe has been in the family.

Louise, one of the things I appreciate about you, well the you we get to see and hear, lol!, is that your are very generous with your time and knowledge. I did this exact exercise when I decided this could be a business, and you couldn't be more right, buying power gives you greater leverage every time. Paying attention to everything and knowing your costs are vital, otherwise you may have just a fun, but expensive hobby! Thank you as always,😊.

Thank you for the lessons on Cost accounting. There's a lot of things to know.... so far it is not yet the true cost. We have to factor in Utility Expenses and other incidental expenses.. God bless you for sharing this information.

keep in mind this isnt factoring in if you make soap with expensive oils and butters like jojoba and cocao I made a excel sheet similar to this. my first page has all my supplies and where and cost per oz, my second sheet has cost per bar breakdown and wholesale and resale price. the third sheet has my recipes and the formulas go across the excel sheets so all i have to do is plug in my ounces i purchase, price of purchase and it does all the math on everything. and my recipe sheet all you have to do is plug in you oil weight and it will use the soponification factor and do math. including the results for super fating. its my solution to soap calc and bramble berry calc always getting my lye amount wrong.

This was very informative. You are very good with costs and also teaching. I’m a newbie at soaping and can forsee a hobby becoming a business. I now better understand factoring in all things except time/labor. How exactly would that be done in soaping throughout the packaging say using your time being worth &15/hour or is it unreasonable to factor it in this way? Is there a general $amount to use to factory tune & labor? Thanks so much.

Thank you for this formula. Now i can see exactly what it is costing me to make a bar of soap .I am fairly new at this and i want to do this as a full time business. I would like to know how do you figure out how much do you figure your cost if the customer wants to buy a 2pound or 3 pound block? because I am not quite how much to charge for a 2 lb or 3lb block. thanks for your help. I have subscribed to your channel and you have really inspired me.

Hi Louise, I thank you for being so open and transparent sharing all your acknowledgment. I have searched and watched a lot videos in KZbin and I even paid for a online classes, but you are the only one who answered all my question that I have on my head, funny but true. In others words you are telling us all what we need to know to start this business.👍I am single mother and my daughter just started the college, so I am trying to get an extra income. So, the question that I have by now is: Do we need to get Insurance for our business, for the products. For example, if somebody get hurts or a simple sue,etc. And, if that the case Should we add it to the cost of our products? Thank you.😊
@805Soap6 жыл бұрын
Yes, get insurance before you sell to the public. Insurance is a fixed cost like car insurance if you have a car in your business, you will also need a business license contact your local city hall for information about setting up a business. Thank you for your kind words, it's sad that more cant be transparent in this business it's not a secret and anyone can do it and make money if you want it. Good luck in your journey, come join my forum on fb, tons of files to help you and also over 5,000 members look at our photos for inspiration, we also have wonderful admins to help with questions. I really only watched this video because I saw that outrageously high price for a pound of soap base. Seriously, everyone should do some price comparison and research about quality and performance instead of just ordering from the first vendor that you find. [Note: this is a general statement and you did cover it in the video] There is one thing I noticed you didn't talk about in figuring cost -- paying yourself. While you might not actually take any money out at the beginning because you are putting all your profits back into buying product so you can expand (where I'm currently at), you should still have it calculated into the cost so that you actually can do so. Or that you can hire some help if you need it and still make a profit. It takes time to make, market, package and ship the soap or any product/service you are selling.
@805Soap7 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with you. Figuring out cost of soap is very important and once you get your sales up you will of course make more money which is profit so you can pay yourself. It takes time but for the average soap maker who just starts out they are buying very small quantities and these price examples are true numbers pulled off a vendor website....so it can & does happen to the beginner soap maker. One other mistake is to carry too much inventory which will not produce a profit unless sales are up. Thanks for sharing. Louise

Hi! i love your videos! they are so helpful. I was wondering if you could make a video on Shipping. Like what websites you use to calculate shipping costs per package and to print the labels. (example like; Stamps.com) etc. Im thinking about bringing my business online but Im not sure what websites are good to start out with. Also what would be a good place to get in bulk shipping boxes from. Thanks!

Yes this is glycerin soap (melt & pour). There is a wonderful program for cold process soapmaking online it's called Soapmaker3 software, some of the soap vendors sell it online also so check prices, it's a great program I did a video on it look in my videos try to watch it first. Which vendor has free shipping? so far I've only purchased from Bramble Berry & Nurture Soap. I have been purchasing my supplies to get started, but still have many more thing to buy. Thanks for this lesson, I have so much to learn and accounting is Not my strength, I have to learn to calculate my cost in buying and selling. Thank you so much. Also, can you please speak about buying fragrances and Essential oils? I have a hard time choosing which ones to purchase, is it wise to sample them first? I should know the answer to this question myself, but I want to hear your opinion and is Essential Depot worth trying? I don't see many reviews on that company, with the exception, from one person only.
@805Soap7 жыл бұрын
If you go to our forum look in the files for vendors, but compare prices it's not always cheaper with free shipping. There is a lot of math to do when purchasing supplies. Start making a wish list with the companies you do business with, then when they have a sale you have it already to place an order & save money. Look for vendors close to where you live you will save on shipping, also look in stores to buy products vs online, thrift stores,craft stores are great for molds. Wishing you the best of luck in your journey.
