Hi Mr Money! If one is Malaysian citizen, residing in the European Union, working as an independent contractor, gets paid in British Pounds (£) by a British company to a Malaysian bank account. Does that person pay tax in Malaysia? I would appreciate your reply. Thanks in advance!

This is an opinion from a non expert, so do take my word with a pinch of salt. Since it went into a Malaysian account, it is taxable. I think this came into effect in 2022. But if you are being taxed before the money got into Malaysia, you might be eligible for tax exemption.

Just an opinion from a tax student. As u said, you are residing in the EU, and assumed that you're not a Malaysia tax resident (if u seldom go back to Malaysia) for that year of assessment, then the income u remit back to Malaysia shouldn't be subject to income tax as ur income is not deemed derived from Malaysia. Unless u "accidentally" become a Malaysia resident for that year of assessment, the income u remit back to Malaysia for that year will be subjected to income tax. But now M'sia gov has introduced a short term exemption till Dec 2026, i.e. before this date if u remit ur foreign income back to M'sia, even u're Malaysia tax resident, u will be exempted from income tax provided you have already been taxed by foreign country for the income that you earned.

RUU Kewangan 2021, there is no way we can get away from cheating/ skipping income tax. Gov has the authority to check everyone's bank account without our knowledge and without our consent and take action against it.

yaa.. but transaction can be done as "friend help friend"... your car broke down, I help. In return you pay me so and so. It turns out Im a very helpful person, I even help strangers. And Malaysia is known to be generous bunch of people. They willing to pay me whatever they can afford and im grateful. never registered myself as mechanic or own a workshop business anyway. how you want to say that is my income? Should beggars be taxed to? because they received people's generosity?
