Happy to help! TurboTax did announce they would no longer work with the Free File program back in July, but it was so easy to miss since no one is thinking about taxes then :(

That question includes all active duty, reservists, and national guard members - so you would put yes

This is most likely my last year being eligible to use free file, but during 3:19, my buttons aren't appearing on my page. It says Free File is Now Open at the top, but sadly it isn't poping up for me o.o

Unfortunately that’s probably an error on the IRS’ website designers 🤷♂️

@CERTIFIED SUPPLY CO well before this year I would have said TurboTax just because that’s what I’ve used the most. I don’t have any experience with the other services so I would go through the free file and let it recommend the best program for you

They didn't turn out to be free for me. I tried a couple different so-called free file websites directly through the IRS website and when I got to the end of the process, it wasn't actually free. My return is extremely simple and I thought that I easily met the requirements. I wasted a lot of time on this and by the end, I was extremely frustrated and just caved in and paid about $100 total for both federal and state. Last year (filing for 2020), the federal portion was indeed free for me. Nothing changed on my end for this year though. I thought I might've been doing something wrong. That's why a tried a couple of the sites, but I got the same results. I guess it's possible that I did something wrong but regardless, none of this is straightforward or easy, at least in my case. It's actually kind of deceptive and it's a huge waste of time. I'm guessing that the IRS agreed to this as a result of earlier agreements with the tax prep sites. They provided the service for free for a few years and now they're cashing in. I have nothing against private business getting a return on their investment, but it doesn't seem that the IRS handled the situation properly.

Have you tried reaching out the IRS about this? They could be removed from the program if they aren't following through
@SarahM-ku5dl2 жыл бұрын
Exactly I had to pay $43 for state file

At what point do I find out its free? Do I have to enter all my dividend information, etc before I find out I should have used one of the other 'free' agencies?
@APennyPinchersGuide2 жыл бұрын
It should tell you the income restrictions for each program on the IRS Free File portal. So you should know going in if it will be free or not. But I must stress that you need to read the fine print because they might still try to get you to opt into a paid version of their service
@tombolo41202 жыл бұрын
@@APennyPinchersGuide Ty, although not an option by their definition, whether State returns are free or not might have been a point of contingancy for me, now that I think of it. So there's that gray area to contend with. If I thought I could TRUST our local AARP volunteers again I'd surely go that route.

@@husseinawada6774 ah I see what you're talking about now. You're referring to two separate things (Free Fillable Forms vs Free File) If you use the IRS Free File, select "START LOOKUP TOOL" and put in your basic information. Then choose the tax prep software that looks the best to you. Once you start filling out your information in the software of your choice, then you'll be able to input what your losses are from the 1099B your broker should give you. If you're trying to file your taxes by yourself then you'll input that information in the Schedule D. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Is there a way to file 2020 taxes for free.

Some of the free file options may allow you to file previous tax years. Otherwise you can always file them yourself using Form 1040, we have a walkthrough on our channel how to fill that one out
