Bought the adapter, got a tank of propane, followed your instructions, filled my two plastic-bottomed bottles (@13.2oz) to 28.2, and 28.4 ounces... close enough! I have a lot of metal bottom bottles that weigh @14.2oz, so I filled one of them to the same @28.2 oz... I think that should be fine also... thanks for the video! I've been buying these darn propane bottles for years, and they are about $6-$8 at this point. I still have eight of the metal-bottom bottles that I need to fill (including the one that is currently on my camp stove, that I cook on in my small studio apartment), and ecstatic that I no longer have to shell big-bucks on individual bottles! I just came back from watching other videos on this subject , and I am glad I watched this video first ! Because one guy couldn’t get the tank over half full but said in case of emergency it was better than nothing others took way longer to fill the tanks and they advised freezing the tanks first , which is a waist of time out of 5 videos You Win ! You did it in far less time and much easier !

Thanks for the accurate info, is most informative for the DIY'er BTW, scientifically, you are not purging air - it is propane and allows some of the liquid to boil off, and that liquid to vapor change of state absorbs heat, just like the refrigerant in your AC. That is why you do not have to 'freeze' these bottles to add more liquid, by purging you have lowered the temperature and thus the vapor pressure of that tank. Also doing a fill by weight assures that you maintain a 80% or less fill on the propane. any more fill than 80% may cause the tank to burst when it gets warmer and the liquid expands- it needs a vapor area above the liquid or the tank will burst. Well done!

Tom, the Schrader valve on top of the tank is actually a relief valve. It will prevent overpressure, for any reason, in the tank including due to overfilling.

I work at a propane company and I'm certified to fill. I wouldn't advise doing this yourself at home but if you did, wear insulated gloves and eye protection to be safe. Cylinders aren't meant to be turned over and this could cause the bonnet (part you turn to open valve) or the relief valve (the protrusion on the opposite end of where you you hook up) to leak, so never stand behind a relief valve. Also you shouldn't have to purge air from your cylinders. Most either are prepurged before the leave the factory or are supposed to be purged before the 1st fill up. The seal on cylinders is generally airtight while not connected and even if a tiny bit of air somehow got inside, it would be pushed out at the start of you using the gas. When you get a cylinder filled anywhere and they're bleeding the cylinder while filling, it's actually to tell when it's full (filling by volume, not on a scale filled by weight) because when the liquid propane reaches the dip tube that is set to the maximum fill line, it sprays the liquid so you visually know when it's filled. That's also one way to remove gas from an over filled cylinder if you don't have the set up to drain it the right way. Sorry for the long message but I've seen plenty of people get freeze burns from propane, myself included.

Alexsandra Rokas yep.so wrap them in foil thick layers then wrap them in a few old days and they won't freeze or get hot.i do that and they stay at a nice temperature.foil first then wrap up each in 3 rags .use a safety pin so the last rag U wrap won't come loose .if not just use some strong tape and tape it up .most things can b done at home but shops take advantage of stupid people.home fixing and filling is dirt cheap and great if ur on a budget.

The best advice he gave! I tried different methods and bled them all. I filled up 500 grains right away after putting the empty can in the freezer for 5 minutes. It refilled in 30 seconds without any preparation. THE SECOND LAW of thermodynamics works better than a lot of comments!

The whole point of the video is you do not need to put in a freezer, just bleed them a few times I mean, if you're a lazy bum. Then, by all means. It's OK that I put in a little effort a couple minutes. Because I will have all fifteen of mine filled before you get them playing in your freezer. With that said, most of the time, you could sit the big tank in the sun/the small ones in the shade for the same results. In both ways still depend on the ambient temperature of how fast they fill.

Being a cautious guy, I watched several videos about this before I tried it. Yours seems to cover the material well, and your method is quicker and easier than some others. Thanks! I found that 3-4 cycles of fill-and-purge got each cylinder about 3/4 full. I figured, that's good enough! I like to leave some safety margin for these little cylinders, since they're considered "disposable," and they always have a "Do not refill" warning on the label.

I have the same heater. The Mr. Heater Portable Buddy and I just connect a hose to the big tank and connect it to the heater. I use a second big tank and connect it to my stove. when they empty I get them refilled. No mess with all those little bottles and no spending all that time refilling them.

This is brilliant. For all these years, I’ve been settling for a 6 ounce or even a 4 ounce fill and was trying to think of ways I could increase the quantity of propane. I was thinking of putting the bottles in the freezer first. This is absolutely Genius. I just got done being disappointed with three refills. I’ll come back and let you know how it goes. For those that have the room to carry a 20lb tank or bigger there is an adapter hose that goes from tank to small barbecue,lantern, or whatever propane device that uses the same fitting for the little bottles. It's rather inexpensive. For those that need to carry a small propane cylinder,great video, thanks for the post.👍 It seems to me that somewhere in my travels I have even seen a "tree" that threads directly to a large propane tank and has 3 or 4 outlets. One on top of the tree for your lantern with more fittings down the tree for your camping stove and BBQ,etc. Just thought I would throw that out there for anyone interested.

There is also a distribution pipe that attaches to a large bottle. You can put a lantern on top of that distribution pipe, and run to other pieces of equipment using hoses off of that distribution pipe . I used to put the lantern on top, run the heater on one hose, and a propane stove on the last. sitting on most campground picnic tables the lantern was at seven or 8 feet . That distributed light in the camping area pretty well. on a sidenote, always carry extra O-rings for the fittings in your toolkit. I once went to the camping area without them and found that my hoses were leaking.

I have been filling these for about 25 years. Camping and boating on Lake George. The instructions got my valve, same valve as yours said pre chill the empty bottles before chilling. Try it. It may eliminate the repeated additional fillings. Great video. JoeB

I just purchased a refill adadpter. Not much luck finding the 1lb tanks around. We don’t use them much, but have forgot the 20lb tank and keep these in the camper for back up. On a side note, $2.50 a gallon was nice pre Brandon. Now we are about $4 a gallon.

I have had the adapter for thirty years. It has an extension out about 8" and 90deg down so bottle is upright. I just pull the safety valve to purge until it spews a little and shut off, will fill to proper height. Cut a bottle open and you can see the safety tube extends down into liquid when full. Works for me. I leave them outside over night in case one is leaking a bit before I store in camper..

I just did it for the first time and it was well below freezing here. I had no problem getting them full. The first one weighed 36 oz. It will be interesting for me to fill them when the weather is warmer and need to use that bleeding method. Well I'm guessing anyways that, that is why I was able to overfill the first one so much.

That is the only way I know of to drop the pressure in the small container so more liquid from the 5gal. tank will go into the smaller bottle. When the pressure in both tanks get equal, liquid will now flow. I may have misunderstood what you meant.

I know this is a older video but thanks for the info. Giving the total ounces per can really helped. I had two cans fill to 32 ounces so I released pressure down to 29 ounces just to be safe. My fitting releases after a certain amount of pressure but still allowed two cans to over fill slightly.

@@Mr4twitch Just make sure you get the proper hose or filter. The oils in the hose leach out and will ruin a Mr. Buddy Heater and similar things. The guy on the Primal Outdoors channel has a video about it and an engineer from the Mr Heater company commented in the comment section.

@@schristiansen3151 That can be true, but it depends on the construction of the hose. Some hoses are designed to work without filters, such as the Mr. Heater F273704 hose. "Does not leach oil into the fuel stream; eliminates the need for a fuel filter"

I used to fill my 1lb bottles this way but I had a valve attached to my 1000 gal tank that let's me fill up my 1, 20 and 100lb tanks. Saves a hell of alot of money since it's alot less per gal to get my 1000 gal filled than the small bottles.

Great system. Only caveat is I would recommend using a filter between a refilled can and your Heater Buddy. Those have very fine orifices and can get clogged if there is any garbage in the large cylinder that ends up in the small one. You just would hate to ruin a good Heater Buddy. Perfect for BBQs though.

Actually you're not correct. The problem is is when you use a hose without the filter the propane breaks down the lining and clogs the Buddy Heater, any other way you're not really in a math problem... Unless you buy a hose from Buddy Heater and it is designed for that to be used without a filter

If you can be patient the same technique works if you just crack the large tank valve open. Leave it for 20 minutes. And voila. No need to freeze or bleed or anything.

I found that putting the empty cylinder in the freezer for about 10-15 minutes before really helps by sucking in the propane much faster from the 20# tank. Good tip though about purging the air out in order to get a little more in. Propane weighs about 4.25 lbs per gallon. Where I live here in LA it's usually around $3.99 per gallon so that would cost me only about $1 to fill each 1 lb cylinder. I think Harbor Freight sells the propane adapter now.

Excellent - the other guys with a vid didn't show the purge part and that is everything. Makes total sense - you have to ease the gaseous gas to lower the pressure in the canister before anything more will come into it. Thanks for the great share.

It would appear this video was shot during fairly warm air temperatures. In the winter time do you think it's important to have the 20# tank warmer than the small cylinders? Or does this not make a difference?

Thank you! You made it simple and I am now filling my own bottles at a fraction of the cost!! I do use the hose model adapter with the shut off valve and 3ft hose find it convenient. Aslo as viewer Macleod mentioned most important part keeping the bottles out of the landfill scenario, recycling the bottles is confusing and hard to find a place to recycle them and not to mention GAS PRICES to get to a recycler come to think of it might be a good business to do exchanges like companies do with 20lb tanks. Where I live, any 'dead' pressurized containers must have a hole in them to be accepted for recycling. Doesn't matter how you make the hole as long as it's clearly not going to hold pressure ever again.

You are not bleeding out “air”. You are bleeding out vapor propane. Which is extremely flammable. The only reason your able to add more liquid after that is because the cylinder is now colder than when you started. As liquid propane has a boiling point of -44 deg. DO NOT REFILL YOUR OWN cylinders or tanks. If you over fill you will explode.

Great video and explaination. I tried this a few different ways. You way is by far the most efficient. Right down to how many times to depress the valve between fillings. 6x is the trick. You feel the tank start to get a bit cold. Screw it on and she fills up. The scale works great too. Piece of mind to know you put in just the right amount. 2 Thumbs up! Thanks bro!

I've filled many of these without incident, but but before I started weighing I know I would occasionally overfill. On one occasion I noticed(at a later date) one tank I filled did bulge slightly(on the bottom) and I presume it was overfilled. Hence(1) I don't feel the reief valves on these tanks are all that reliable and (2)neither a bulging tank or an uncontrolled release of propane if the PRV does work can be a good thing. Just like Howie, I bought a scale and I weigh every tank. I sometimes pull on the scrhader valve(PRV) to speed up filling, you can fill them in about two minutes or less this way. I'd be interested if others feel that it is safe to do them that way.Also I always test with soapy water to check the valves for leakage; if it does usually popping it once or twice will reseal it.

The colder the temps are when you're filling, the more you'll hear it hiss, and quicker they will fill. But the more you do it the more you will get a hang of all that as well. Rock on!

Here's the real value of this video IMHO. It's gaining the skill more than saving the dollars. You never know in this crazy world when the 1 pounders might simply be unavailable. As far as I can see, this would work on a supply tank of almost any size; even the large pigs. Well done!

This is a great hack! Thank you. Can you explain why you purge the bottles beforehand? I have a Mr. Heater buddy portable heater, and find it struggles to heat once the pressure in the propane bottle drops below around half volume.... There then is a decent amount of gas still left in the bottle, but not enough pressure or it to perform with the buddy. I was looking as I wanted to see why this way, then came across your hack. For me it was about a waste of gas (left in the bottle), so to have to purge that before refilling seems strange..... Can you explain this please?

Not sure about TV's but all phones record a few seconds every few seconds..there's a setting you have to change to stop that don't laugh but try searching your settings 1st then Google it & you'll see how many people found it in there settings & closed it I mean I'd be watching a movie on TV then mention a certain actor then Google it from phone & before I'd type the 1st word that actor would pop up,even my phone GPS I've watched myself walk from the back of my house in the den then walk twords the front door & the dot actually moved with me & it's only 60 feet

My stove died. Don't want a 20 pound tank in the house. One tip. Get some plumbers tape to seal the adapter. The adapter is notorious for leaking.

Problem with that is the pressure mixed with the rubber hose produces an oil in the hose which will ruin the regulator on your heater

That was cool man. I was doing the Freezing thing and filling them and was like. Their has to be an easier way after I tried pulling the stop all the way out of one trying to fill it too. This is hands down the easiest way. No freezing or pulling out the release valve stop.

Howie, this is the best method I've seen to date. Great job on the video! I've been using the shrader valve method and your technique is even better. I have to grin every time I refill a 1lb bottle this way. It makes me feel good knowing I just saved about 3 to 4 bucks per bottle. Safe traveling my friend!

Invest in some brass caps. Creates an additional layer of safety with the rubber seal and reusable just like the tanks.

The 4.25 gallon tank costs me about $12 to fill, give or take. There is about 18 pounds of propane in that bottle. 18 bottles would cost me about $72. You just saved someone $60 each round. That's huge, especially going through a couple per day.
