Don't know if someone already brought this up, but I just reviewed the 5e rules and you don't add your proficiency bonus to the actual damage of the weapon, you only add the ability modifier to damage. Proficiency in a weapon only applies to the attack roll of an attack using the proficient weapon. For example, if character has Proficiency in Longsword (with a Proficiency bonus of 2) and strength ability modifier of plus 3, he would roll for attack of d20 + 5, but the damage (if attack equaled or went above AC) would be 1d8 + 3 slashing damage.

With the stats and how they work, there is a chart that explains it with tomatoes Strength is being able to crush a tomato. Dexterity is being able to dodge a tomato. Constitution is being able to eat a rotten tomatoe. Intelligence is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting tomatoes in a fruit salad. Charisma is selling a tomato based fruit salad. Easiest way to explain their use.

lmao hey it works

Best way to explain stats is the tomato method. Strength- ability to crush a tomato Dexterity- ability to dodge a tomato Constitution- ability to eat a rotten tomato Intelligence- knowing a tomato is a fruit Wisdom- Knowing not to make a tomato based fruit salad Charisma- ability to sell a tomato based fruit salad.

TIP: Use a pencil to fill it out so you can erase and adjust as levels/modifiers/bonuses change. Also, I didn't hear it mentioned but Initiative box is Dex Modifier (and gets added to d20 roll when rolling for initiative)

Stephen, you are 7 different kinds of awesome, Thank You for this! It has been decades since my last campaign and trying to jump back in has been more problematic than I realized. I really appreciate your pace, and the examples you give without over explaining! You give enough info for the player to decide for themselves along with page numbers in the HB for quick reference! The overhead view is perfect for a half blind gamer like myself! Hell, I even picked the same class, and we have pretty much the same handwriting, lol (Thank Shar for erasers!-) This is a great video for someone just getting into tabletop, as well as a concise refresher course for an old school head looking to slang some dice! Thank you again Stephen +50xp with a D12 for Good Karma!

If you can't refer to the player handbook and see the chart for ability score modifiers, then use this formula (x is the ability score): (x-10)/2 rounded down. An example would be that an ability score of 13 would be (13-10)/2 rounded down or a +1 ability score modifier.

Thank you. This video didn't explain them at all, and I was so lost.

You could also divide by 2 round down then subtract 5 you'll get the exact same number 30 ÷2 =15 -5 equals yours +10 or For like 15 instead of saying15-10=5 5÷2 2.5 round down to get you plus 2 you could just 15÷2=7.5 round down 7and then 7-5 also equals your plus 2.. I found it easier doing divide then subtract I don't know why
@CitizenMioАй бұрын
@michaeltaylor9017 Or for players that are still confused and run away screaming if you explain it with more math ;) The idea is that ordinary people average out at 8 in their abilities, but adventurers are a special bunch and 10 is the average score for them. Therefore the modifier is set at zero for any ability with 10 points. So anything below that gives a negative modifier and anything above a positive one. Every even number (or two steps) the modifier then goes down or up by one. Example: An ability score of 14 is two whole steps above 10, so the modifier is +2 The same is true for the uneven number 15. Only at the next even number, 16, does the modifier go up to +3 Likewise 8 is one step below 10, so the modifier is -1 As it would be with a score of 7. Only an ability score of 6 would drop the modifier down to -2.

one helpful tip when making a physical character sheet, mark your death saves and health in pencil and lightly, if you ever plan on levelling up the same should go for your stats, mods, proficiency bonus, and EXP. Casters should avoid ever inking prepared spells for obvious reasons(I find it most helpful to have my spells in the form of cards so I can easily sort, find, and pick out).

If you determine your initiative by rolling a d20, how did your character get a -1? I'm learning from scratch here.
@blainemedina43263 жыл бұрын
The reason why he put -1 is because that is his dexterity modifier. In play any time combat starts you’d roll a d20 then add or subtract based on your dexterity modifier to determine your turn order.

What does saving throws mean?
@korijan26603 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty new myself, so I can't be 100% sure, but I believe it's the stats you use to see if you are affected against something! For example, if your DM says "roll a saving throw against poison", and you are a fighter, you can choose to roll and then add either your strength or constitution modifiers to it? Not sure though tbh
