Mate, i would love to film with you in 360 :D Moving Camera: Attach a String to the Kamera and to a moving thing on the top of a room. Cover the whole ceiling with a second layer leaving a small space for the string. Then you can move the ac car or what ever on the ceiling to move the camera ^^. Damn, this whole stuff sounds waaaay too expensive ^^

I think 360 video has place in this world, but not in in the cinema world. Its good for events and things like that, for example Finnish Got Talent has 360 videos of the acts so you can see the whole act or the judges reactions as you like without the editor deciding what to look at the right times :) and congratulations on the 600k!

The biggest benefit to 360 may be that there are so many restrictions. You can't place lights, mics, tripods, or fancy camera rigs. 360 (for now) lacks that sort of polish. But doesn't that add a layer of realism? If the lighting is awful, it'll be what people are used to. If the camera can't be moved or set many ways other than just placing it at eye level, then wouldn't it be more realistic? Audio can only be recorded from the camera, mimicking the way humans hear. Perhaps all of these "flaws" are more like rules when writing specific types of poetry. With certain restrictions, you can create something beautiful, and perhaps more beautiful than without restrictions. 360 may just always be a "cool thing that filmmakers can do" or perhaps it can usher in a new age in film- one where the story isn't seen through a camera, but by oneself.

You could use 360 to make a cinema-like experience and only use 180 out of the 360 and have mics and lighting in the back half and then in post make all that black. That way you give a viewer more freedom than in regular video but still guide their eyes. That way they can also watch it all while sitting down without having to look behind you

I recently just finished a University module that required me to create a 360 documentary. It's fair to say I hated 360 video before; I used to think the concept was cool but it just seemed so gimmicky. I felt like everything I knew about conventional film had been made completely irrelevant, however after being forced to work with 360 video I've began to enjoy it more and more but it's definitely something that needs constant practise and a keen mind for learning

I don’t think it will be the future of movies. But I think it would be cool if we mixed VR surround sound audio and some type of chair that movies around and vibrates. So this will create the feeling they are there. And it’s a big action movie. I don’t know I think that would be cool. I believe this will be done in video games. That would be nice

Great video man. I've been going through a lot of content/reviews of what people think of the 360 video production. You've hit on one point that I believe is totally going to be a fundamental on how to move the camera. Sure, I'm working with just a Samsung Gear 360 currently but straight up, out of everything that I've shot with it, I've only wanted to work with the videos that are mounted to something. Everything that is either handheld or mounted on a stick that I'm holding just looks awful in a headset. The key issue is, like you said, drawing the attention of the viewer to what you want them to look at. As soon as you move the camera, the viewer would need to focus on what you are showing them. Then there's the act of holding a 360 setup on a pole or even mounted to an actor on a rig of some sort. Those who get motion sickness would be completely sick in a matter of seconds. They would be trying to focus on something that's constantly moving with every foot step or any movement an actor/PoV person. It'll be like being on a boat being rocked back and forth with every foot step. I really want 360 to work but oh man is that going to be a challenge. Binaural Audio would be awesome but I know nothing about getting that perfect. Who knows what the future holds for 360 since I and many others want it to be successful.

Hey Simon, any thoughts on this? I'm 15 and I'm really passionate about filmmaking, every aspect of it so our school decided to let each 10th grader choose one professional domain to observe for one week and I chose a TV Channel.I was there for a week learning, taking notes, helping, asking questions etc. and I asked a lot of people,(Cameramen, editors etc.)on whether or not I should pursue a career in filmmaking and they all said no. Each one said that it's all nice and fun when you're doing it as a hobby but once it becomes your routine you will slowly but surely lose the passion and love you once had for this domain, what do you think about that?

A friend of mind has a samsung 360 camera. He used it to film the plane he was on landing into Kathmandu airport via a side window observation bubble window. The video footage is pretty good as you can see limited view inside the plane, and outside the plane wing, propeller, the scenery foward, aft, and below as the plane was coming into land on a very short and dangerous airport. Now that is the short of thing I would want to use a 360 for or in somewhere like Siston Chapel in Rome.

I think 360 video will take off but it will become the norm for the viewer / film maker to maintain the focus of the film in one orientation. There will still be things happening in the the other areas so as to maintain the immersive feel of 360 but the main story will be to the front thus enabling the viewer to sit on a chair for the duration and watch the film

I think that 360 video would apply to special producers that have something really interesting to say all around, literally. If you point and shoot, you tell the audience what you want them to see. but in 360 that becomes boring. I like to have control in my videos, so wont be getting a 360 for time to come.

The only problem with current 360 video cameras is the potato video quality you get from stretching the raw footage, so it's not really worth buying one right now. That been said, I actually don't mind 360 videos as a video format and we should embrace it. From the animated 360 videos and games I've seen, the quality is tolerable but I could still enjoy the video for its contents. Hopefully filming 360 videos will improve with time (and cost less for us indie filmmakers).

Well, one thing is for shure with 360. Creative camera work, camera movement and photography as used with traditional film making goes through the window. All 360 footage is and can be only shot on wide lenses and therefore everything more or less is skewed and distorted (AKA ugly). 360 maybe has some potential for specific documentary, sports and news covering as it offers viewer more information,...in quantitative sense ofcourse. But phylosophy "more can only mean better" is not something that would always work. Sometimes simple "less is more" is more suitable, convinient and telling. It is interesting but some new technological concepts in video visual art and also video reproduction just can't win, even if they seem to be more advanced. One such concept is quite old in fact, but has despite technical improvements failed to reach wider popularity and use so far. It is 3D TV. To some degree also 3D cinema.

Far too many limitations. But Imagine we had a way to mash 360 cams with drones and get the drones to use anything else that isn't propellers so you don't have to move the cam with you hand every time. We could figure out navigation quickly but how to make the camera float on it's own without propeller noise and the obstruction from the parts of the drone would be the real challenge.

I've yet to see someone effectively tell a story with a 360 camera. It seems they are best suited to documenting places, especially as security cameras, to show a travel location, for on the spot news broadcasting, to document sporting activity or the like. Maybe a niche genre of 360 vlogging or porn or the like will open up (maybe it already has), but these cameras seem to provide very limited scope for the kind of story telling that humans have grown to love over thousands of years. Cool tech, though.
