an unsung responsibility with fisheye filming, you kinda touched on it at the end, is that you're in the pits with the skater. they might be trying a trick/line for hours. as a filmer you have to be a motivating force for them- not just for the long haul trick attempts, but when you think there's a better trick they can do at the spot. half the job of a filmer is to prod the rider into trying something outside their comfort zone, something they never thought they could do but you know they can do. you gotta battle it out just as hard as they are, you're in it together, an unspoken bond is formed, forged from the trust between the each other, for one to land the tricks and the other to capture it. thx for coming to my ted talk

Dont cheer right away end the clip then cheer unless if its like a ender and u want to cheer to add in the clip. The reason doin this is so when the roll away happens and you go hack to edit u dont get a shouting noise a few seconds from ending the clip.
@tacticsboardshop3 жыл бұрын
Agreed! The filmer should stay quiet for a few seconds after the roll away. Sounds of the homies cheering in the background is totally acceptable though! 🍻 - Tim

@@tacticsboardshop YES!!!!! This is so important! Stay quiet (unless like they said, the clip calls for it), hold the shot, and film for 5 seconds longer than you should. Those are my 3 main things. Really bothers me when the clip ends a split second after the land.

If you have a DSLR Fisheye you can leave the sensor stabilization on, vigs aren't common on DSLR lenses and I find it helps keep camera shake out of the shot when filming lines. But obviously it's smart to play and double check with your setup. On my VX tho turning steady shot off was a must.

Great Video! There are tips you said that most videos don't even mention. 2 of them that I didn't take seriously when I first started filming... keeping lens clean & keeping the skater hyped. Ruined several film sessions, because there was huge pieces of dust or whatever on lens. I keep a lens pen/blower in my pocket at all times and check the lens every few clips, now. You wouldn't think that you would have to keep the skater hyped, as a filmer. But if the skater gets the vibe that you don't care about filming that, or you aren't invested in filming it... they can lose interest quickly or get pissed. But when you (the filmer) make the skater feel like you want them to get it as badly as they want to get it... It usually goes WAAAAY smoother, and usually ends up being more fun for the skater and the filmer. Plus they'll be more likely to want you to film their next trick. But yeah, loved the video! Excellent advice!

find a sweet spot F stop for your lens. Most of the time when you have a low F stop around f2 you will have a lot of more chromatic abboration also a high f stop may have less focus in the center. My sweet spot for my cam is around f6.

I have a problem... I'm skateboarding on the left leg and with the right i push. But when i want to try a trick i have the left leg on the tail and the right in front, so when i want to ollie when i ride i cant rely on the right leg lmao . So, what do i have to do??
@tacticsboardshop3 жыл бұрын
So there's two things you can do. You can either force yourself to learn to push with your left foot and your right foot forward and commit to Goofy stance (which I recommend because it's useful to be able to push both ways!), or you can push Mongo Goofy. Mongo pushing is when you push with your front foot, which will let you keep your left foot in the back and push with your right foot which returns to the front after pushing. Mongo pushing however is relatively frowned upon in skate culture and you may encounter some unfortunate teasing. But if you don't care about the haters, you can brush all that off and just rock it. Just do whatever is the most fun, because that's the true core of skateboarding. Cheers! - Tim

@tacticsboardshop2 жыл бұрын
It depends on what kind of shot you're going for. For most cases you'll just have it set to tracking autofocus, especially with follow filming because it's so dynamic. But if you have your shot set up and you want to get creative with your focal length, then give it a try. Feel free to experiment with different settings and get some cool shots! 👍 - Tim

Any fisheye lens you'd recommend? I use a Sony ccd trv99, do I need an adapter?
@tacticsboardshop2 жыл бұрын
You'll probably need an adapter unless you can find a fisheye lens with the same thread/filter diameter. I can't really recommend a specific lens unless I know what kind of threads/mounting method the camera has. I tried to look up the filter size of the Sony ccd trv99, but I couldn't find the specs. It should say on the camera right by the lens. Once you have that bit of info, then look for a lens that is that size or one that is close enough to use an adapter. But don't get a lens that needs a huge adapter because you'll end up getting a huge full circle vignette. (unless you want that look) Just do a lot of thorough research and I'm sure you'll find the right lens. Good luck! 📹🛹🙏 - Tim

Thank you for this post, it was very informative! I have a DSLR but am wanting to get into the camcorder world. Is there a camcorder that you would recommend? I’m looking for one that I can put a fish eye on but then that also has a built-in zoom in and zoom out. At the moment I can either only find a camcorder that I can put a fisheye on but doesn’t have built in zoom or the other way around to where it does have built-in zoom in and zoom out but I can’t attach a fisheye/wide lens
@tacticsboardshop2 жыл бұрын
There's so many camera options out there now! It just takes a lot of research and familiarizing yourself with all the components and terminology of camera equipment so you know what to look for. It helps if you know what kind of fisheye lenses are available so you can get a camera that is compatible with one of the lenses. Some of the most popular cameras in skateboarding right now (besides the vx1000) are the Panasonic AG-HVX200 and the Panasonic AG-HPX170. (Although they film on P2 cards which are expensive and kinda annoying to use). Search for "Prosumer" level camcorders and you'll find a bunch of great options. Have fun researching! 📹👍 - Tim

@17jacob3 жыл бұрын
what camera would you recommend? i need a new one
@tacticsboardshop3 жыл бұрын
That's a tough question, because there's a lot of good cameras out there. You'll need to find something that's within your budget, and also something that has a compatible fisheye that's also within your budget. You could actually pick the fisheye you want first, and then start looking for cameras that will accommodate that lens. If you're wanting to do a lot of Long-Lens filming, then I wouldn't get a DSLR because they're zooming capabilities are limited. Instead look for a camcorder, (not the tiny handy cam ones) that have a smooth zoom and good tracking and stabilization for those buttery looking long lens shots. You also need to decide if you want to film in HD or SD, and if you want a camera that uses tapes or memory cards. If you do go the tape route, you'll have to get some extra equipment (computer with firewire port, firewire cable, capture cam, etc.) so that's an extra hurdle. There's way too many things to cover in a KZbin comment, but just be diligent and take your time researching, looking at test footage and making sure it's compatible with your lens/handle/mic or whatever other accessories you plan on using. The most popular camera brands in skateboarding are Panasonic and Sony, (and RED if you're a huge company, but who can afford that!?) Researching camera stuff can be overwhelming sometimes, but when you find the right camera, you'll know it and get stoked about it. Cheers and Good Luck!!! 🍻🛹- Tim

should my cameras fisheye lens have a border/vignetting
@tacticsboardshop2 жыл бұрын
It totally depends on your camera/lens combo. Some camera/lenses have a full circle vignette, and some have a full frame and it totally depends on the aesthetic that you're going for. It's not a bad thing if your camera has a vignette if that's something you like. It's important to research the cameras and lenses you're investing into so that you know if it's going to have a vignette or not. You can zoom in a little bit and make the vignette disappear, but you'll be limiting the fisheye's distortion effects if you zoom in too much.

Maybe i really am the only one, but i hate how skateboarding is filmed. For me there is nothing worse than the close up shots from beneath a rail against the sun. Another thing that i cant stand is when the camera moves while a trick is being performed. Everything gets blurry and the only way to actually see the trick is slomo. And why do filmers play so much with zoom all the time? I would rather have a tripod than some excited cameraman for my part. In almost any video i watch i wish the camerman would take 5 steps backward so the viewer could actually appreciate the spot
