Places in Europe have started to make efforts to regulate tourism. Venice has already banned giant cruise-ships from docking and unloading thousands of day-trippers in its historic centre.
Spain's Canary Island has been planning to tighten rules on short-term vacation rentals. Spain welcomed a record 85 million international visitors last year, and tourism accounts for over 12 percent of the economy.
But many locals say the booming apartment rental business is making their neighborhoods too expensive to live in.

The horrible truth is that locals can't even find housing thanks to the temporal rentals for Tourists. In Mallorca and Canary Islands health workers, teachers and police can't find where to live so the population and even the tourists will have a problem if they need the services of people who can't afford to be there to take care of them. They just opt to live somewhere else.

I used to shop in Stratford-upon-Avon. They seemed to have got the balance right. The main streets were a mixture of tourist tat (inevitable) and local shops with a sprinkling of national chains. It was a lively, bustling place and a pleasure to visit. Slowly, it changed. A soulless shopping centre was built on the edge of town, including one of the large supermarkets. The small supermarket in town couldn't compete with prices, and closed. This was part of the council's plan to eradicate anything but tourism from the centre of town, though, of course, this was denied. Independent shops near the former supermarket found their leases terminated to allow redevelopment of the site. They never returned. National chains either closed their stores or moved out of town. Consequently, the everyday independent shops slowly disappeared. I last went to Stratford-upon-Avon some years ago. I had no reason to because all the shops that I used had disappeared. So few non-tourist shops remained that there was no reason to go. The soulless out of town centre thrived because the locals had nowhere else to shop. I didn't go because my own town had its own look-alike centre. My answer to "how many tourists is too many" is that it's the number at which those in charge become greedy for more tourist $£€¥ at the expense of the locals. There is nothing wrong with tourism. Stratford-upon-Avon was a great place to visit either as a tourist or local. Tourists got a good Shakespearience, the locals benefitted from shops that would not have been there but for the tourist revenue. The place had a buzz that made each visit a pleasure. Then the greed set in and the locals were pushed out because the locals couldn't, or wouldn't be a cash cow on the same scale as tourists.

La dolce vita is ONLY FOR TOURISTS in Italy. We who live here in Italy suffer greatly from it!!! Tourists are so IN their touristy dreamy state as they wander our streets, they are NOT aware of them blocking daily life!! How can my elder parents and elderly grandparents walk through throngs of people with bags who dont make way for them and bump them in the streets. Hotels charge the prices that their customers are willing to pay. If the prices were too high then they would have no customers and eventually go out of business. I would think that any town or city, like any country, has the right to limit entry! And I don't believe it should be done on the basis of wealth, like charging a daily tax on day-trippers. The people who live in a city or town own it, and have the right to say, "X number of non-residents can enter per day, because of overcrowding, problems with trash and sewage disposal, and wear and tear on precious places." Finding ways to limit entry may be a problem, but the alternatives are bleak for native born and other permanent residents.

The country as a whole does need tourism to balance the budget, but not everyone and every town is suffering to provide the funds the country needs. Ad campaigns aimed at visits to lesser known places combined with efforts to limit places where excessive tourism is harming the residents and endangering the special places that attract tourists can spread tourism to places it would help, while relieving the pressure on tourist "hot spots".

Travel without interacting with locals seems like such a waste.

collecting a tax is not a solution to "over-tourism". Were the tax collected actually used on the city's infrastructure and the locals living there? I try not to go to the hot spots of tourism and at the "peak time". I feel sad that if my present in a place were being viewed as a problem. I can only be self-conscious about not being a nuisance and not behave like an entitled tourist blocking the path just for a photo and not insist on talking to the locals in English when it is clear that they don't speak English as a second language. A tax for the negative impact they have for the locals and a tax for their huge insatiable demand on food. Half the time it doesn't even help locals with employment because the tourist spots are all manned by other foreigners. Most tourists aren't even that interested in the culture it is just so they can say they have been there and then bore their friends, facebook/instagram follows with their photos of them standing at some well known tourist site.

People are overly obsessed with experiencing something special outside of their daily routine. Because they can show it off to anyone with SNS. If photography is restricted, the number of tourists may be cut in half

Angry Canadians’ sentiment on the recent rising 14 cents per litre carbon tax hike regarding high inflation and high Interest rates, many Canadians can not afford to pay their bills! They oppose raising taxes under any name such as 'Carbon tax' or 'Beer tax' or 'climate change'. - The Canadian government now spends more ($54.1 billion) on debt interest while the health-care budget is $52.1 billion! - Canadians are using credit cards more, as there was a 10% increase in their debt in 2023 compared to the last year! - Instead of rising taxes and gas prices, export clean Canadian natural gas to the EU and prevent China and India and Eu and Iran's regime from burning Mazut and coal. Stop arsonists from burning the forests. Last Year Canada got %20 of global forest fires!

Limiting the number of photos people take would be even harder that limiting people! Reduce the number of non-residents allowed in town on any given day. Raise the taxes on air-b-n-bs and other short-term housing, and recommend areas around your hometown as interesting destinations. Make up your mind to do it, and it will happen.
