To get the bees to move through the excluder expeditiously, leaving the queen behind, put some frames of open brood (sans adult bees) in the box under the excluder. Put a strip of duct tape around the inside of the second box that you're using as a funnel. This keeps the bees from crawling out.

I wonder what about the drones because they won't pass the queen excluder. How will you find the queen in a whole bunch of drones then?

Practice. Lots and lots of practice. Ha ha. But seriously, we often find the queen based on her movement, and the way the other bees move around her. The movement helps us see the difference between queens and drones more easily.
