The rhythm on the serve in tennis is often overlooked because it's not that obvious but it is the key to powerful and consistent serves.
That's because when you're serving with the proper rhythm you can maintain the looseness of your arm and the same timings of your movements in the serve.
This consistency of timings will help you achieve high consistency in serving percentage.

Very nicely demonstrated. I have watched most of your videos and I like how you explain 1)mechanics and then 2)rhythm and feel. It's easy to focus so much on mechanics that we never get that loose feel. Really liked your video on "throwing/guiding" the racket head. I get so much easy power now. It takes a lot of confidence in the mechanics to be able to do this but it definitely work - indeed with less effort. Thanks and keep up the excellent work.

This works really well for me (intermediate player, 4.0). When I force the drop to happen (try to copy the pro's), it slows my swing down and the drop itself is not very deep. The rhythm 1....... 2!!! works great to fix it (let the racket drops by itself). You are an amazing coach!

Excellent as usual Thomas ! I like the simplicity of the 1 and pause 2 count . The explanation on tension on second serve hits home for me. I practice my serve often and in match play because of tension often loose my practice rhythm. My goal will be to maintain my ( 1 and 2 practiced rhythm during match play ) Thank you so much for your insight in Feel Tennis .

i found power in my serve with Thomas' instructions. he knows his thing. if you want to learn how to serve, just watch his videos instead of watching numerous different instructors.. that will get you confused. the 1-2 rhythm he explains here? the 2 part is very important if you want power in your serve

Brilliant. I think that if more players focused on this one aspect of the serve, their game would immediately go to a higher level. Also at around 3:00 Thomaz brings up the point of how pressure situations when competing can cause us to speed up thus introducing muscular tension that disrupts a natural and efficient service rhythm. I play a lot of doubles, and I see this with players all the time. Takeaway for me is to master the 1-2 service rhythm, continue to checkpoint it during practice and competition, and counter any tendency when serving during a match to deviate from that. Thanks Thomaz!

Another point of view I like is simply that at any time of the serve, one should relax as much as one can. The less effort as possible.

@feeltennis
@feeltennis 8 жыл бұрын
+Adrian Bacea Most people are way too conscious and they can't possibly bring down the serve to just 2 or 3 steps. The goal here is to make the trophy-to-drop phase unconscious so you work only with 1-2 rhythm with some time delay.

As usual, a very interesting view of tennis, but aren't you not running the risk of encouraging a stop in what should be (according to most tennis coaches) a continuous motion ?

i watched your RF serve slow motion and yours serve motion.pros extend the right arm so much more:) to me it feels sometimes my arm will detach from the body its not the most pleasant of the feeling if repeated lik 60 times in a row....i suppose body has to adjast throwing that arm to the widest possible point:) for your motion it looks as if there are 20 cm more you could have streched your arm before the contact

My goal is to get that sound @7:44 from my serve. It's like did somebody just pop open a can of Pringles from the 90s?

I’ve struggled for years with my serve. What’s funny is I’m very happy with my overhead. Lots of pop. My serve seems more like I’m just pushing racquet to ball. I’ll try your idea. It’s exactly what I would like to do. As a 13 yr old kid I shotput a lot and was quite good. But in high school baseball I had terrible arm. Poor throwing ability. Maybe shotput ruined me.

I do not agree with that concept 1-2. The racket drop exists and it happens in a certain amount of time. Being conscious it is slow and controlling the loose feeling does not imply crispation. The phases of gestures that require looseness should not be avoided to avoid crispation. Interesting video anyway.
