@@Asian_ConnectionI agree don't get me wrong, but here in modern times, automotive engineers are changing every single design and every single automotive component every year nowadays and we the DIY ppl have to wait 10 years or more for readily available household versions of "specialty" tools to be available to the public. Even the Cresent wrench and pipe wrench used to be considered specialty tools, but that was way back in the 1800s and earlier. Lol. Regardless of that scenario, you can still work on most vehicles with common tools as long as it's not some overly complex foreign exotic car like the trash BMW and others make.

not a toyota owner here but doesn’t matter in this case because the subject of the matter is how to investigate a leak with simple gear you can find at any parts store or online. i used to be scared or intimidated by ac systems but after a little 1-0-1 on youtube about how to replace condensers and such, it’s not so “rocket-sciency” stuff anymore. i’m no mechanic by any measure. but i’m not an idiot soy boy that couldn’t change a wheel or tire or my own brakes or oil etc. this is a very helpful and simple to follow and understand video without being overwhelming and extra winded on everything. i already have my replacement ac condenser for my 2011 ford f-250 gasser but there is 👌nada video on how to replace that specific part for that specific year model and engine. it’s really frustrating. however after watching many ac condenser videos on a variety of models and makes, they all generally are the same concept of dismounting and inspecting and replacing.

Chris. Just another idea is, if u have the means to borrow or buy a sniffer. The r134a is heavier than the surrounding gases. So use the sniffer at all the lowest points and you can find a lot of leaks that the dye and light might not find. Steve

Nice leak detecting. Another thing you might try if you don't seem to find the leak, is to try looking at the puddle of evaporator water on the ground to see if it has any die from evaporator leak. Since it's so hard to look in the box. I don't know if that really works any good but it's an idea.

Put a re-manufactured compressor on my car that they said they tested, it turns on and the clutch activates fine but won't hold a charge. When recharged by a pro the temp didn't change hardly at all. Going to use this method. Thanks.
@mdhsabh2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for a great video. Two suggestions: 1) To be complete, shouldn't you have looked for a leak under the dash (evaporator)? 2) There is a turnable ring around the pressure gauge on the can. On hot days, the pressure a normal system is higher than on cold days, due to expansion. So, the ring is adjusted to point to the outside temp, which also moves the lines indicating a "good" range for pressure indication when filling the ac.
@warriormanmaxx899110 ай бұрын

I already know the leaks going to be massive when I hit it with the UV light. As soon as I hit the trigger you can hear it escaping up by the condenser somewhere. The system won't even build pressure at all. Gonna check out that ring for sure.
@wholeNwon9 жыл бұрын
Oh, and one other thing: Since the compressor is running during the charging procedure, it's very important that the refrigerant canister not be inverted at all. Otherwise liquid refrigerant could enter the low pressure line and destroy the compressor. This is especially true if there is no accumulator. There is another video on line where the tech does exactly that and then can't understand why the compressor worked when he started charging the system but then suddenly seized when he inverted the container. Duh.

Hey Chris - First of all - loved your detailed explanation on the AC system. My LR322 AC just gave up last week and now struggling to get it up and running ( charges quoted are exorbitant by various garages ). That's what I thought, the issue is I'll have to bring it to a shop to get it all evacuated. Cause I do have good refrigerant in my lines. Just the compressor is making a wicked bad thumping noise (like a bad piston) occasionally when running. I saw another comment about how this could be caused by the shop who did my cooler flipping the recharge can all the way upside down feeding liquid into the lines.

good video but this method isn’t perfect at all. using uv dye only works for pretty large holes and for the most parts you cant see around the tubes in some places aand also if theres rust dust on the pipes it will also glow under uv light. in some cases i guarantee you that these micro holes on the aluminium tubes that uv dye didnt show, will still leak and if youd had to make a business on it clients will come back to you in 1-3 months. another thing to mention is that the chemicals in the uv dye dont work well for the tubes since its pretty strong chemicals. the best method is to check it with electric refrigerant leak detector, but i guess for a house garage budget uv dye is ok :)

Thank you. I do most of my own repairs and this is one of the best descriptive videos I have watched. Hoping I don’t find a leak but thanks for your advice and great video. I will need to turn all my clocks 180 degrees to use the new 12 to 3 position.😂

You can just visit any website or search on any auto parts website for the ac kit. Sometimes Chris doesn't have much time to search the correct link or he was tired that time so sometimes he can mistakenly put the wrong link in description. Hope my suggestion helps

1A has shown me a lot. I always know what I’m doing but I use the videos on here to see what order to remove things in to get where I need without just putting bolts and seeing where what got loose lol. I seen their “why you should never do this yourself” video about recharging your ac 😂. I felt like they made it just to confuse people who don’t know anything about acs or cars to discourage them from trying to do it. I just came today to find out if I for sure needed a special light to see the dye or if I could “charge” it with sunlight, since that’s uv light too, and then it just glow in the dark lol. Yes I am that simple and I feel like the world should be too.

Such a clear and concise video. I suddenly feel so informed about the subject of my car a/c not cooling. Not that I want to try doing this myself, but at least I can talk intelligently at an auto repair place and get duped by them. I would like to go live very near Chris and be his neighbor and best friend, or a favorite adopted aunt! 🥰 Thanks dear fellow. 🙏

Around 1997, in Hawaii, I bought a used 1986 Mazda 626LX (4 doors, hatchback, sunroof, manual transmission) which wasn't blowing any cold air. So, I took it to a shop and they charged it up for me for about $50. The first time I turned it on I got the "SH*T scared out of me because this white stuff started flying out of the vent and I initially thought it was smoke, as in something internally is burning as I reached across for the fire extinguisher on the floor in front of the passenger seat (Hey, I'm a helicopter pilot and like to be prepared like a BOY SCOUT). Then I realized it wasn't smoke, but "SNOW" flying out because the air/moisture in the vent was being frozen by the cold AC blowing air initially until about 20 seconds when the AC started up - laughed my ass off - the air was so cold I got SNOW in my car in Hawaii! I loved that car, too bad the US NAVY wrecked/totaled it while transporting it to Baltimore for me! My significant other's car (sent back to the supply system since then), 1990 FORD ESCORT's A/C got charged up too, but it took a while to cool the car down...she gave me one of those "jealousy" snide looks every time the snow went flying in mine, LOL!

snarlingrabiddog5150 No problem! These videos are what really helps people! It can cost $1000 for a shop to just find a leak and you dont even know if they are telling you the truth!

Two different shops quoted me at $113-$223 and I called my motorhead friend and he said go to chrisfix and do it yourself. Being female and having interest in cars really sucks! Mechanics (well, ppl in general) will screw you over SO bad for being uneducated and female!

You answered all my questions. Thanks. My leak is 24 hours to empty the lines, causing both fans to not kick in. I also have another problem. The cooling fan doesn't go on at all. One problem at a time though. Again, thanks.
