That's been my retirement dream ever since hearing a Rick Steves podcast interview with a couple who did it. Now, they had an adult child they could stay with in their home country when they wanted to take a break, so that's something to consider. Steves asked them what they absolutely had to pack for their long term stays in other countries and they said good kitchen knives 😆 bc vacation rentals don't usually have good ones. So that's another thing to think about - what do you HAVE to have in your day to day life.
@joshmartin1938 Жыл бұрын

Wow, you really nailed that! Because of Brexit ☹ we've been looking for short let basic accommodation in the Netherlands for 2-3 month cycling experiences and airbnb had seemed the best option. But your excellent advice has opened my eyes! One option I had not heard of is Home Exchange and our 4 bedroom house in London would be empty whilst we let abroad but if we sussed Home Exchange out it would save us money and mean our house is put to use which is a good thing. Options 2-10 looked like vey good places for us to dip our toes in the water. Many thanks, it was very clearly presented and you are a star⭐!

As always, informative and comprehensive. A virtual smorgasbord of options in looking for various properties, and some options that many will not have considered (including me). My Dad has done home exchanges successfully in the past throughout Europe and I think it would be an ideal way to see other countries. I will check into it. But the number of options can be overwhelming so I would pick one and try it out and venture forth if necessary. I have used Airbnb in places like Boston and Paris in the past with success. I like having more options and more budget friendly options listed here. I expect to share and revisit this video. Thanks!!

I agree that fees are going to add $ to cost of your stay on most of these agencies. Your suggestion to look for rental signs is a good tip if you have the time before hand. A lot of rentals want to avoid tax and rental bureaucrazy created by cities because of Airbnb, so this might work. Although I don't recommend Craigslist because of scams but placing a Wanted ad might get you the room or apt from someone that wants to avoid tax and rental restrictions in their city. Ive rented to students using this approach as people generally give their Bio so you know who you are dealing with.
