Hi Sterling. I happened upon your "cry technique" video. I found it super helpful and subscribed, liked, and shared it with several musician friends. I just wanted to say, thank you for the advice. You've encouraged me another way as well. I've been asked by groups that I've spoken to to create more videos about recording and writing music. I tend to boo hoo all that with a, "Ehh.. there is plenty of people doing that online." I was helping a friend setup for recording acoustic songs yesterday and he said, "It's how you explain it. I'm able to understand it and put it to use." For some reason your style and delivery feels similar to how I present in a live setting. It has encouraged me to strive for the same on YT. Take care and thanks again.

Wow this is the first time i finally get it!!! Thank you sooooo damn much, ill keep practising this to build a thicker mix...it seems to be all in the compression right? Xxx

Compression in the upper nasal area, yeah. Takes time and practice. Have fun with it 😊

Hi thanks your content is amazing! I heard you say to develop the chest voice first because it is foundational in developing head voice in the future. In practical application, Does it mean practicing to sing songs using chest voice? For example Maroon 5 songs are obviously head tones, so I will sing them one octave lower (thus at chest) Even though I will not sound natural/ sounds like a Frank Sinatra singing Maroon 5? Thanks!

when you get to the light (heady mix), how do you visualize tilting your larynx so it sound more like chest?
@SterlingRJackson Жыл бұрын
Visualize? Hmm… I don’t necessarily. I just started feeling that and understanding it needed to happen. It’s similar to yawning. 😊

Is there a 'limit' to the notes one can hit in a heavy mixed voice as opposed to a lighter mix? Does your voice force you to go to a lighter mix at some point? Thanks for the videos, by the way.

Yeah, as you go higher it just becomes more head voice because you’re more fully over that “threshold” I mentioned. Think of some of these 80s high screams like Judas Priest. It starts sounding like that if you’re still going hard but really high. Make sense? Basically, the higher you go, the more “heady” it becomes

@@SterlingRJackson Yeah that makes sense. I guess what I mean to say is is our limit of chestiness dependant on our voice type? I want to sing a B4 in a chesty type of voice, but I can only seem to get a 50% 50% % kind of thing going as a baritone. Everything beyond an F#4 for me is absolutely mixed and sounds less chesty. I'll give the tips you have in this video a shot to see if I can end up bringing up more 'weight' up there. Thanks.

@@mohammedea7393 yes it depends on voice type but everyone is different. It also takes time and strength to build the coordination. So just cause you can’t do it well now or get as broad of a chest voice type sound doesn’t mean you won’t ever be able to. 😬

Always songs from me or my bands. That’s a song from my COSM album. Album is called “Omnition”

You're a baritone with a secondo passaggio at F#4? Is that what you mean when you say bridge?
@SterlingRJackson2 жыл бұрын
That’s what I mean 👍
@Tanner-Kline2 жыл бұрын
Good to know. Thanks for the reply. I feel confused as you're the second voice coach on KZbin I've talked with who has his secondo passaggio at F#4. The other coach was Chris Liepe and you both in my experience have significantly different timbres. To my knowledge F#4 was a pretty standard tenor passaggio. Do you have any availability to address this phenomena of registration more in depth? Thank you for your time.
@stebolian2 жыл бұрын
I get confused that mix is like flageolet coordination. As that's the only coordination that I seem to use less air

@@Tanner-Kline I don’t tend to focus much on voice type as I find doing so can be rather limiting and make people think in a box. There’s definitely something to be said about knowing and finding your strengths but one of the things that makes singing so exciting for me is learning and trying new stuff. Hearing someone sing crazy high or distorted and trying to figure it out. So while one might argue over my specific voice type, I don’t really think about it much. Keep in mind, everything I’ve learned and teach, I’ve learned alone. I’ve never had a vocal lesson. It’s just all from my love of discovery and the craft.
