I was in Cobalt this past weekend hunting for silver with my Dad's old metal detector. It is just a basic model so I found a lot of junk. I did find some rocks that set off the detector though. Not sure where to go from here. Do you think it would be worth it to rent a tile saw to open them up? I also brought back some rocks with iron in them. I might do something with them down the road.
@meMiner4 жыл бұрын
The iron rocks are solid brown? If so, they are garden rocks now. If you found other rock that might have silver, look on the outside after cleaning and rubbing them to see if you see any shiny silver. If before cleaning they are stained green, they have nickel. If pink, then cobalt. I wouldn't since any if I don't see silver, but that is just me. You might have fun anyway. You always learn something with a project like that.
@Larkvall4 жыл бұрын
@@meMiner Yes I took a bunch of rocks stained brown that set off the metal detector. I was thinking at the time I might be able to extract the iron like the old old timers did. Now that I have seen a few videos of that process that idea might go far far down on the to do list. :) I think there might be some nickel in a small rock I got at the Beaver mine. I will have a closer look at the rest in the light of day. I actually came across your videos because I have a piece of land close to Tory Hill. I still haven't made it to Gibson's site yet. I am not sure what to do with apatite if I ever found any.
@meMiner4 жыл бұрын
@@Larkvall The rocks with iron will make most detectors sound off. I used to take many home too. Beaver has nickel for sure. It is not bad sliced and polished Gibson is fun and a sample of apatite looks nice for display. So does the titanite. It may give you the incentive to look over your property for outcrops. The whole area is mineralized.
@Larkvall4 жыл бұрын
@@meMiner Yes I once found a nicely formed quartz specimen on my property, but it had a lot of cracks. I am pretty sure it came from what I think is a feldspar outcropping. Investigating this outcropping is another item on the to do list. I am not sure the best way to approach this. Attack the rock face with a pick axe or just sieve through the material beneath? Or both? I have some vacation time coming up and I was planning on spending some time there Alaskan milling some oak logs. Looking into that rock face might be a good diversion.

East (Bancroft area) is probably the best direction for a beginner site. Other years, I would suggest joining a club and go on some of their field trips. Another possibility is Montrose in Niagara. The yellow mudding pick is made in Haileybury ON by a company called Time. I am not sure if they ship or who they distribute to. I picked mine up directly.

Watching you eat that corn by that lake with your dog made me look forward to fall! It can't come fast enough. :) That would be a great place to use a telescope, too.

I love the fall. The smells, cooler weather, bird migration...corn. It is sad that winter sets in so fast. Makes me appreciate it more. ;-)

@@meMiner, not to mention the coffee tastes better when it's cooler, too. But yeah, that winter is always around the corner whenever fall comes.

All of our national Forests are closed due to fire 🔥 so im stuck with Rock hounding santa maria river bed in California which is fine, but not so sure about the Air quality... these fires are devastating ☹ right now I'm working and helping save wild animals searching for injured wildlife in burnt locations... all i can do is try.

I saw some sat maps of the various fires. Unbelievable destruction.

@@rutherfordclan5693 We used to have that happen at my parents farm every few years. Somebody would remove the collar and drive away. That is so sad. Poor thing didn't understand. They would show up hungry and dirty. Never had an abandoned donkey.

Sure don't want an empty mule half way between stations.

Is there any way I can send a pic to you of this rock for some knowledge on what it is. I’ve been trying for a week with no success. My curiosity is on overtime.

Dang. Unless somebody has already dug the hole, you would have to become a miner.
@luking24504 жыл бұрын
I would not mind doing the work for it. Im more im told that all the white rock on top was a good spot to start there is also spots where i dug for post where i see a spiral or yellow going down was told by my inlaw thats gold but the powder form. Is that a good spot to dig or mor closer to the rock formation.

@1topskyrocket3 жыл бұрын
@@meMiner when I get back I'll check into that. Thanks for the tip. So if it's softer then is it cobalt? It's just strange that a rock that's got a pinkish hue to it, also rings up as silver half dollar.
@meMiner3 жыл бұрын
@@1topskyrocket It gets complicated. Usually, cobalt is associated with something else. For example arsenic and it might be Skutterudite which has a black streak, brittle and 6.5 hardness.
